I agree - both.
Aqua's get along well with almost everyone so it's easy to socialize but it's also good for us to retreat for some time on ourselves. So..imagine like an aqua is everything all rolled into one. Cold but in reality emotional (not showing it) , can be socializing and can be loner,etc,etc,etc.

As an Aqua I'll answer:
I used to be highly sociable, I loved to party. These days i prefer to be a loner.
Reason? I shot myself in the foot badly by "being there" for every single poor waif and stray. Unfortunately it stuck and people still bring me their crap.
It wore me out.
Now when I go out to socialise I feel like they've saved it all up specially and load it on me. So now I can't be assed.
I like to party, but do it rarely. When i go out though, I usually enjoy it as long as I'm firm in saying "I'm here to enjoy myself, not to listen to your problems, fetch me a vodka and on the way back, work it out for yourself, cheers, love".

We are literally BOTH. We are multi-dimensional. Just when 1 person sees us being a loner, the next day we'll become the world's biggest social butterfly.
However, I do though think that Aquas tend to be in the "Be to myself" mode alot MORE OFTEN than they are in a "social" mood. But even then, it all depends on each individual Aqua & what they are going through. During some periods of an Aqua's life, they may be completely independent of a social life, while yet they may change & become the exact opposite the last 6 months out of the year.
Crazy thing is, people act so confused when they realized we are BOTH. It's almost like they have trouble believing that someone could be so multi-dimensional. We are considered "unpredictable" for a reason. We're not bi-polar nor do we have split personalities. It's just that we literally like the best of both worlds. Everything doesn't always have to be 1 or the other. Sometimes it's possible to be "both."
Aquas are especially extroverted when they are consistently surrounded around individuals they feel comfortable/trusting/safe with. And it's not to say that we're only loners when things aren't going right in our lives b/c trust me, sometimes we have the MOST fun when we're by ourselves!
It's weird, Aquas literally know how to find fulfillment in life with OR without others. Do we mind a little company & a social gathering every blue moon or even on a daily basis? NO. BUT, do we NEED it to feel content/happy? No. When we feel that being by ourselves is more rewarding in the moment, we grant ourselves & others that wish. And hey, when we feel that being social will bring more fulfillment at the moment, we put ourselves out there & socialize. It's a give & take.

I walk the line. I tend to float through several different social circles without much trouble, but I am good about maintaining my alone time. Even around lots of people I tend to stay in my head.

I'm about half and half. Sometimes, I can't stand being in my home and I always want to be around people.
But then, after a little while, I want to just stay in and chill. Have some "me" time where I shut out most of the world. Of course, that's when all my friends decide it's time to hang out lol

I am also an Aquarius with a Libra Moon..and like every Aqua here i find socializing big time work and exhausting we are the kind of people who need a recharge of sorts after being around people for days on end..but most of the time i feel that being alone is even better and that having my family helps me to recharge myself.

Its gotten to the point that i see ppl in my town and i think whats the point.....everyone in my town are compltete assholes there only a hand full of original ppl here.......I'm so ready to move to korea or europe and just get lost in some other culture.......the only reason I intereact with ppl is curiosity.....when i was younger i used to be curious about everyone and i had the time of day to dig a story out of them....now I am not surprised and its the same stories.....
All Aquas whom I have encountered like to have their own "cave". The Aqua cave is like a laboratory of sorts. Aquas use different methods to recharge their batteries. Usually, it is some type of creative pursuit. The unevolved Aquas play mind games with other people to recharge their batteries. As a result, they end up alienating a lot of quality people. Further down the line the only folks whom will deal with the unevolved Aqua are losers and scumbags. Which frustrates the unevolved Aqua due to their out of control ego.
In my observation, evolved Aquas will socialize with people whom they consider on their level and above. Even then the evolved Aqua will still need their "cave" time. Never ever try to block the entrance to an Aqua's cave.

I dunno what I am evovled/unevovled... lol I hang out with losers and really great people alike... I honestly most of the time only like to talk with people who are on my wavelength, exceptional, original, or most importantly of all... are actually smarter than me. I hate how Aquarius sign people always come across as arrogant when really they are just being brutally honest... I just know I'm not stupid okay... I don't think I am the most brilliant person in the world I just keep it real... it's not like Aqaurians are the only sign that smart people come from hell the most intelligent person from the 20th century Albert Einstein wasn't even Aquarius he was a Pisces!!
Does it take a lot of energy when socializing in public YES... but only when I'm around people who are not even close to my wavelength... are not exceptional in any way... are not original... and are just not quite as sharp as myself. I understand we all have something of value to offer to this world (you would like to think anyways) just it takes a lot of brain power for me to even see it these types of people... a lot of understanding ON MY PART... a lot of patience ON MY PART... a lot of holding my tongue ON MY PART... by the time your done doing this long ass mental battle you don't even feel like socializing with anyone. Definitely wouldn't say I'm selective, I love talking to people who share similar interests and think along the same frequencies as I do but I find talking to people with differing opinions much more satisfying. A quest for more knowledge in everything? *shrugs*
I definitely relate to the whole how aquas act differently depending on which stage of the 'journey' they are on. When I was younger I loved socialising and meeting new people, actively conduct my own social experiments to gauge reaction out of other people just to satisfy my own curiosity. I guess that's the part where people don't realise we're both? Even within a crowd and being extroverted to others we're in our own little world doing our own thing? lol. I know that makes us sound like such selfish people but meh.

i love "cave time" a lot. Thankfully my husband is also a "cave man" type. So we have our "caves" I love it so much.
