I've been thinking about the nature of the Aquarius sign, as well as the nature of all of the other signs, and was looking for a pattern by which I could quickly decode the underlying theme of each sign simply by understanding the parts it's made up of.
Part of my research was to compare and contrast different modes and qualities between other signs to understand how Aquarius stands in reality. By exposing how it differs. Just as you can only really know light when you've seen dark, I'll attempt to understand Aquarius by understanding and comparing it's differences between modes, elements and qualities.
Here's my conclusion so far, although it's only an opinion at this point.
Aquarius is represented as the "Fixed Air". Fixed represents structure, it represents long toiling, deep efforts, continual activity, inflexibility, stubborness as well as hard to break habits. Air represents our mind, thoughts and beliefs.
Because it is not a Cardinal sign, Aquarius tends to lack the ability to initiate thoughts in a quick and explosive manner except when confronted with transits which would initiate this effect. By this I mean that Aquarius, as a Fixed Air, represents deep thinking and stubborn beliefs.
Because it is not a Mutable sign, Aquarius tends to lack flexibility except when confronted with transits which initiate such effects, it tends to stand out because, unlike water being poured into a glass, it's solid and it will not conform to the shape of the glass. In the same way, Aquarius has a problem conforming to the beliefs and ideas of the general public.
Aquarius represents deeply held beliefs and habits that have been built up over time, it represents deep thought and consideration.
When people talk about Aquarius being inconsistent or spontaneous, perhaps it isn't so much that it's true, but that our actions are not in line with expectation, but perfectly logical and reasonable from our point of view. Spontaenous actions may simply be actions that we've been churning in our heads for a long time and finally acting on, which manifest in the real world in a rather unexpected way.
Aquarius is supposed to be ruled by Saturn and Uranus, we are constantly thinking about ways to improve and change, but are we really trying to change who we are for the world, or change the world to conform to who we are?
Sorry for the quick and dirtiness. Well, I welcome any opinions or crticisms on this, just my personal opinion at the moment.

Forgot to mention.
This is the very basic energy, but because people are made up of more than one sign in their natal chart and due to the effects of the planets, the energies and traits can often be augmented or changed slightly.
But purely by itself, I feel this is a pretty accurate assessment, although it's still just an opinion and opinions can be off the mark.

It's just the differences between us. Some people want to go by the flow, some people want to know the meaning behind the flow, some people want to analyze the flow, it all works together to form a whole.
I enjoy analyzing as much as you enjoy going with the flow.

my planets are a bit messed up...what would you all say..
I find it quite terrifying that my planets are in opposition..and my sun is square to the 4 strongest ones.
Sun Aquarius
Moon Scorpio
Mars Taurus
Jupiter Taurus
Pluto Scorpio
You notice that the sign of the bull is in the most powerful and warring planets-> Mars and Jupiter. Also notice that the DARKest planets the Moon and Pluto are in the Sign of the SCORPION- Scorpio...
And you notice that my dark planets and warring planets are in OPPOSITION to EACH other...
Yep..Scorpio's opposite is Taurus.. Anything with the scorpion is bad my dad said.
No wonder my dad said that my chart is one of the worst he's ever seen. I remember the night I listed my planets and their signs, he immediately said. "Oh my gosh, your chart is one the worst charts I've known." I say "What does that mean?" he says, "In the next 25 years, You don't have to worry about anyone else kiling you, you'll kill yourself."

Well, it's certainly interesting, although without a full natal info I couldn't really tell how they would fully play out with each other. But that is quite dynamic.

Kris, I forgot to mention.
The actual Aqua data wasn't really research, it's more the method I used to arrive at it that I am testing out. I'm trying to create a more concrete and logical formula for figuring out the roles of the signs, planets and so on in astrology.
I'm glad that it wasn't "research" since that means that the method worked pretty well then and can try it out with the other signs.
I'm sure a lot of people may know the method and formula I'm working on, but I'm still learning it so I am still working on understanding it as best I can.

RC; that's actually VERY UNTRUE; anything with the Scorpion can be GREAT. Scorpio is about death; death and transformation; dying of old habits, gaining new ones; gaining wisdom through subjective pain, and heartache,; basically if you believe/learn through your follies and remember the emotion behind that pain you will evolve in that area; theoretically; I have pluto in Scorp, which is generational, but also it's how you deal with things psychologically, and the complexities of the minds unconscious domain. only thing is what ever your scorpio may be in, you'll have to learn to discipline yourself, and focus your energies for the good of it; scorpio is an obsessive sign and as tenacious as a Crab.....it's gonna take some control on your part.

But either way you guys get a great star report; for the Up, and Comming Virgos on the other hand life ain't so bright....but I would rather be the one I am and screw the rest; I live my life for me, and accept everything it's to offer; good, bad, indifferent; you gotta test it.....I think there is definitely more than one type of virgo....I suppose that there are the Winged ones, and the trapped ones....pathetic.....she's an angel, not just a mere women; A symbol of hope, and change for the better. I resemble most Aquarians....I find it strange.....
