what to do to my date when he's busy from school?

We are dating for 2 months now. We're in a long distance relationship.
My date is busy for school work and his mater's thesis right now. But we still text each other everyday.. but they were kinda short conversations recently.
I don't mind it of course, bc I know how busy he is right now.
So today, he hasn't initiate the text yet. And I want to text him first by sending a funny picture about doing thesis, and giving him a cheer up/encouragement message for his master's thesis.
Do you guys think it's a good idea OR I should leave him alone until he texts me?
Also, should I mention that I won't text him first so I will not distract him from doing his work, but he can contact me anytime?
Also, could you guys help me out what should I text him for a sweet cheer up messages, please?

So.. yeah, I sent him a funny picture and told him that I just wanted to make him laugh and take a small break from work. He also can text me anytime bc I don't want to distract him.
