Why do I get the feeling that the term self-sufficient is being associated with money, exclusively? Except for Solitas, he comprehends that being sufficient in something has as many angles and is as multi-sided as the people involved.
I am an old-fashioned woman in today's standards, meaning .. I don't work for a paycheck, but, that doesn't mean I don't work and provide quite sufficiently for my family in other ways.
In a partnership, neither of two people have equal qualities, make the same amount of money, they have different talents, skills .. from the other. Because their qualities vary, doesn't make them insufficient in what they do.
Really, I don't understand why sufficientcy equates with a monetary value system.

I can read .. it doesn't say that .. you do.
Everybody needs help, support, assistance from others, in some fashion. If it is believed that a person can survive in life without the support of some kind from another human being .. then it will be a lonely one, a bitter one, a sad one.
Even if alls a person needs is an ear to bend .. it is still relying on another to provide something to you valuable.
In every person's life .. it is needed from another to make love to you, to hold you when you're scard, to boost your ego when you're down, to kiss your boo-boo's, to laugh with you, to touch your heart when you're grieving, to encourage you when you feel inadequate .. all of us.
Like Solitas said, "Nobody is truly self-sufficient"
We all need somebody .. sometimes.
