...more intelligent and more stupid than women: Study

London, September 24: It's a research that is guaranteed to delight as well as infuriate both men and women, and could spark a row over the breakfast table.
Yes, the study carried out by scientists in the United Kingdom has revealed that men are actually more intelligent than the fairer sex but they are more stupid as well, London's Daily Mail reported on Monday.

"The phenomenon may have its roots in society's expectations for the sexes. Men have long been expected to be high achievers, while women were expected to base their lives around the home.

"The female developmental programme may be tilted more towards ensuring survival and the safety of the middle ground," one of the study's authors, Psychology Professor Timothy Bates of Edinburgh University, was quoted as saying.

The researchers came to the conclusion after measuring the intelligence of over 2,500 brothers and sisters by testing them on science, maths, English and mechanical abilities --

they found a disproportionate number of men in both the top two per cent and the bottom two per cent.

According to the findings, there were twice as many men as women in the smartest group. But there were also twice as many men among the dunces. However, the average scores of the men were virtually identical to that of the women.

The research tallies with past findings that men at university were more likely than women to receive first class degrees or thirds -- while women tended to achieve second.

The argument was always that men were more likely to take risks with their academic arguments, which could either be successful or fail dismally. Women, it was suggested, were steadier in their learning.

i read this article quite recently, interesting..*i think it all pretty much evens out in the wash.. *in short, we need each other, for better or worse* & who knows we may have a well deserving female president very soon..

*i think alot if could be biological, as well as cultural..*more testosterone = more male-like risk-taking, etc, etc.. Higher estrogen = higher interpersonal, humantic skills..

This is old news GA, but to put a more astrological spin on it, I've noticed there's a great variance of intelligence within Aries and Scorpio, the mars ruled signs.

Is it ? This got published in the newspapers here only today. But I agree, sometimes they do tend to look into the archives for want of something to fill.

I have seen people who are generally oblivious, so to speak, from both the signs. Any explanation for this ? Astrologically, I think Mercury and Jupiter are supposed to be the influence planets as far as intelligence is concerned. Perhaps their placement plays an important role. Otherwise Mars alone is the most militaristic, right ?

Adaptation ? Physical or emotional ? I feel that itz easy for women to adapt since they don't see a defeat in it. On the other hand a man ( usually since childhood ) is reared in such a way that hez actually not prepared to face emotional setbacks. Hez a winner in his household, mostly pampered ( in my part of the world at least ) and partially unaware of the challenges which wait for him ahead. When things don't go his way, he would simply grapple with one question -

How did this slip away from me ? And he hasn't been trained for that.

Both are very focused signs and have absolutely no problem leaving areas in their lives under-developed, if they don't feel they have a high potential to begin with(they are very ambitious signs).

I think Mars influences everything. It represents the most basic and vital energy that everything else is dependent upon.It is true that Mercury represnts thoughts and Jupiter knowledge, but without the drive to utilize them, they are meaningless.

Yum, I agree with what U have mentioned but it still would not take away intelligence from those who are focused yet oblivious. Intelligence is about the capacity to acquire and use knowledge. It also encompasses thought and reason. So there are two possible scenarios -

1. Some folks lack the intrinsic ability to unearth and use evidence/motivations hence limiting their capability to develop a taste for knowledge in the first place.
2. They don't apply themselves in all the areas with same vigor and hence don't acquire any knowledge in some of those which hampers their ability to reason properly.

Now we are faced with two distinct questions -

1. What makes Aries & Scorpio susceptible to the first malady ( If true )? ( sounds like tautlogy)
2. Which planetary influence will determine whether the subject will concentrate or be expansive ?

My experience says ( mostly Aries flavor, U can provide Scorpio insight ) Aries can surprise U any moment. From the surface the arguments may seem amusingly flawed, but it has more to do with the refusal to quote logic rather than the lack of it. Also, personally, I suffer because of impatience. Planning for the future unsettles most of us because if we set about doing that, then we encounter so many permutations in a flash thatz it wears us as quickly as it appears on the mantle. An Aries will dish out 50,000 possibilities for U in nano-seconds and will leave them for U to separate the logical from stupid ones.

Yeah, I'm saying that 1 reinforces 2.

I don't think we are any more susceptible to the first than any other sign, I just think that when we do suffer from stupidity, it tends to affect us more.
