Don't you just sometimes wish you had an exciting jet-set life instead of a hum-drum day at the office, back to home, weekends off life style ? It's the same every day for alot of people. And it's like death.

Yeah, i can imagine it would be. My life's pretty exciting. I think you have to have a few things going on at once... for example hobby, sport, passion. You need a change, perhaps a change of scenery, a job, or to move house? You don't want to be mundane. I sometimes yearn for the normal life style but i don't think i would be content. I am lucky i suppose. Being queer you have this whole community to turn to and we're all going to end up single, most probably, so we'll always have friends. I think the cultural differences between alternative and traditional life style s are huge. For example, traditional straight couples marry, have kids, buy a house, save superannuation, and retire. Most gay people don't have that opportunity so they become more community minded. I never thought being gay would have it's advantages. Anyway, i digress.

I was just going to say, if you feel complacent, throw yourself in at the deep end. Move house, join a club. Do something different. Make a change. Do something you wouldn't normally do. Throw yourself into a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable. Get out of your comfort zone; your comfort zone is death.

Yes..the "comfort zone"..I understand that part--when it gets too easy. I have a freind (Virgo) that has been living that life for a long time--no wonder he hasn't progressed.
As for me...I've just been feeling down on myself. My job will end soon so I will be out of work and no income. I'm scared b*tterless. My car is dying, I don't have any real money saved up so I can't afford to travel--hell I haven't even been to Europe! I just wish I could afford a better life style I guess and be involved with exciting people--like in entertainment or music industry.

Okay, you two need urgent attention. Firstly, Phoenix, i found that i went through a slump where i felt i wasn't getting anywhere, but i believe this is the calm before the storm. There is no way you can sustain a 'high' for long periods of time; the body and mind just won't handle it. Nerve impulses (the sensation when you touch something for example) peak and receed. If they didn't, we would constantly be feeling stimuli and would probably be in pain (just think about it). So i believe the human body and mind are the same. I've always said life is a rollercoaster... ride it. Maybe you'll get off for a while, who knows. But you'll have your ups and downs.
I have often yearned for the quiet 'suburban' life and believe me, that is going to be my next move... but i also want the challenges of having an interesting life and a good career. I would really want a quiet home and some peace and i want neighbours that don't make noise. I am ready to put up with the anonymity that comes with living in the suburbs. Inside myself i am a country girl/i like my peace and quiet, but i have ambitions... so i have to live in the city to a certain extent. And i also wouldn't mind about your hobbies. They can be anything, who cares, as long as you enjoy them. It may even be going to the gym, i don't know. I think you'll find this is the calm before the storm.
Okay, Sloane. Seperate post.

Sloane, it's funny cos you can stand back and look at an industry and think it's all hunky dory in it but it's not. The music industry can be exciting, but it can also be damaging. If you're not a strong person, you won't survive. I know what you mean though, if you can meet people on an individual basis from the music or entertainment industry, sometimes you can meet some okay or interesting people.
I'm not sure how the job market is going where you live but don't give up hope. The shame about the workforce is that if favours 18-35 year olds. There is no reason why you can't create your own opportunities, seriously. When i was younger i wanted to do a particular thing but nobody would give me a job so i created my own. I started my own business, which only lasted for me about 7 months because i was ousted by my partner, but there's no reason why you can't do something similiar. You need an idea and if you need the money you can get it. Do you have equity in a house? Rhetorical question, don't answer it, just giving you something to 'think' about. You can always get a loan.
There are always small business people in my state that start out with nothing or $ 10,000 and end up with 100's thousand business or million dollar businesses. I was just talking yesterday with a friend and she told me of an ex-school teacher who started her own ice-cream company and it is now doing really well. She went from teaching to her own business. Seriously. All you need is an idea. Then you look at the competition and try to work out if you can do it any better. Really, you can start these things from a very small position. Think about what you're good at. The other day i heard of a woman who runs an 'online secretary' business, communicating with customers overseas. How it works is they email 'what they want typed up' at the close of their business day, which is the opening of ours, she does the work, emails it back, and it is ready waiting for them when they arrive in the office the next morning.
Is there a service you can provide? You said you were in the media/entertainment industry? Can you be an artist manager? Can you be a media consultant? Can you put together corporate videos? Can you liase with corporate people and form a business with one of them (doing the videos)? What i am going to do when i've finished up with what im doing now is identify a company who i think i can be of use to and approach them with my resume, listing my strengths, abilities etc... Have a think about it and identify your strengths. What exactly do you do? You don't have to answer that, it just might help me picture you a bit better.
I know it's all easier said than done. I haven't acted on any of these things for a while but i am planning to do so in the near future. You need to take risks. I know it's a bit of a bummer about your car, especially if you rely on it, but something always works out. I use public transport if i have to.
Anyway, get back to me if you need anymore attention.
Libragirl.
PS. Phoenix, superannuation is a retirement fund. It's like saving up for old age. Sometimes the company you work for contributes a portion and you do the rest, or sometimes you do it for yourself. It is not yet compulsary in this country.

Libragirl you are such an awesome human being!!!
Sloane and Phoenix should listen to everything you posted.
My put on the matter is quite the same as yours.
Risk is the key to movement. So many times I jumped off the deepend to widen my knowledge base. I tell friends I even was a chickentail waitress once just for the experiance. Now the darn place is a topless bar in Hollywood and they look at me sideways, but swear it was just a bar when I worked there! Some tell me Courtney Love worked there too!
Life is what we put into it. I am a full tilt Libra. When I look over where I came from and where I am now, I am amazed at myself!!! My parents weren't very supportive my chooses, but I did things anyway and never ever looked back. I am kind of the 'you only have yourself' kind too. No safety net for me! I did stay in some dead end jobs, but only for the money, insurance, educational benefits, hell I got a college education from one job and great teeth because of another. Sometimes you have to look at what can be gained instead of oh it's a crapy job. Move on is all I say friends if you are stagnating. Life is short and that is not a cliche!

Libra Girl!
Thank you so much for that long response. You are very generous. I don't have equity because I don't own a home--I rent. And I'm not thinking of taking out a loan because I'm just not interested in starting a business right now--even if I did, I don't know what I would sell. I'll be plugging away at the damn computer, looking for a job. God I feel so pathetic. I watched "The Apprentice" last night and even THOSE candidates had better jobs then me.

hey sloane...you could sell your scrap book skills. i think there are alot of people that would like a cool scrap book, but just don't have the time or patience to do one. you just have to figure out how much your time is worth, plus your overhead (expenses) and there's your business. you go girl. have faith and believe in yourself.
