How do I confront my manager?

This topic was created in the Astrology forum by libralotus on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 and has 45 replies.
I haven't vented much about my job and the stress it's causing so I'm sorry if this gets a little bit lengthy. My GM is a Leo and the assistant manager is a Sagittarius.

I guess I'll start off with saying that I work at Hooters and some of this is to be expected but it's gotten to the point that my job might be jeopardized. I started back in February and I did great. I was confident, kind and hard-working. I could immediately see that new hires weren't welcomed by the senior girls. I get it. They could feel threatened by girls they see as competition. The "head wait" would assign newer girl to do more sidework than other and generally pick on them.

The girls at my store sabotage each other. They tattletale to managers instead of rectifying the issue with the other girl. I've gotten pulled aside three times since I've started over the most ridiculous issues that often is not the complete truth. I'm sure this draws attention to myself and changes how my managers perceive me.

For example, I was continuously skipped all night because my section was taken up with a large party. If there's no host then I can't hold anybody accountable for not seating me. My manager questioned why I was being skipped and I told her I had no control if no one was held accountable.

Sometimes I will be crazy busy and asked to run dishes while girls are sitting down and relaxing. I avoid confrontation and just do it but I get frustrated.

This goes unnoticed although my manager will be right there. I've brought up issues to them but I haven't seen a change. There's so much favoritism it's ridiculous. I had a double (11am-12 am) and was denied a break and reprimanded for eating a snack. WHILE A GIRL WAS EATING A MEAL IN FRONT OF HIM.

I'm not going to prentend that I'm the best employee ever because there are occasions where I'm completely drained after classes and don't preform as well. I've never had issues related to my work ethic and have been the shift leader at my both of my previous jobs.

Fast forward to now, they usually don't deny shift swaps but I was twice this week and only scheduled only one day. They haven't spoken to me other than a few night ago during a busy shift after a girl explained a situation out of context.

At this point, it seems futile trying to confront them with anything but I feel as if my job is on the line. The only thing I can imagine is if I had a "secret shopper" the last night I worked and didn't do well on it.

Currently, I swapped my only shift with somebody and they've approved me giving it away but neither approved or denied picking up. We also have an employee meeting on Saturday for undisclosed reasons. Like I said, I really hate confronting people especially after changes were never made. I don't know if I should call first or go up there. I lack the confidence and I never had to deal with being fired.

Okay, but I was trying to be serious.
Make a scene and make sure you when you do you have every right. He sounds like a narcissist sag type. he's bold over confident and unempathetic, salem witch his ass at the town square and burn him and he will avoid you like the plague.
Be very professional. Ask to talk to the manager privately and address your complaints. Don't make any accusations because it will only cause them to get defensive. Leave all emotion out of it. For example, address your lack of a break by saying, "Last week I didn't get a chance to take a lunch in 12 hours. I know we got busy but in the future I would appreciate if we schedule in a lunch and breaks. Thanks"

Or

"I kept getting skipped over last shift, how can I prevent that from happening again?"

I've dealt with an asshole manager. He would yell and nitpick at everyone for no reason, in front of staff and customers. Everyone was intimidated by him. I pulled him aside after my second week and said, "If you feel the need to correct me I would appreciate it if you do so in private. Thanks." He never did it to me again. We are actually chummy now but he still mistreats everyone else because he can.
advice: quit

sounds like the place is full of asses
pun intended
Dude, leave. This isn't going to get any better. Serving jobs aren't that hard to find. Every time I hear about places like this, it's total hell for most people involved. The cattiness is out of control and it's just miserable. I knew of some former coworkers who went to go work for a similar concept (scantily clad servers in a bar setting), and it was the same shit- catty, bitchy assholes. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Find a better restaurant. Hooters is a dying chain anyway. It's really obvious in how it's run too, based on what you've said here. It's not going to get better dear. You're going to be the one who gets burned in the long run and it'll tarnish your track record if you try to go somewhere else.

Going to your manager isn't going to accomplish anything. I worked for a place with management that sounds incredibly similar to yours. With chains like this, you're going to have a lot of ignorant asshat managers who usually work their way up and have zero training in management. It's why you see all this crazy going on where you work- lack of proper education in how to actually be a manager. They either sucked their way into that position or have been there so long that they eventually moved up to management.

Start looking for another restaurant if you want to stay in serving. ...look for a better one. I was stuck in a similar shit hole (dying chain where my experience was very similar to yours- lazy coworkers, favorites, etc.) and once I got out and away to a much better company, it's made work life so much easier.

Your situation will not improve- only get worse. Start looking for a new job and get out asap.

So your manager already knows about it but does nothing about it?
Yes. My female manager, the Leo, hasn't done anything regarding the way that I've felt treated. The assistant manager basically told me to just deal with it because that's how I'll stay afloat.

As for being fired or not.... I don't know. I'm just making assumptions right now because I don't want to address it out of fear. People I work with told me in the past that they wait till you show up ready for work to fire you.

I don't know what state you are in but labor laws are similar everywhere. In NY it is one 15 minute break per 4 hours and 30 minute lunch if you work 6+ hours. That 12 hour shift should have had a 30 minute lunch and 2-3 breaks. I'm guessing that they don't have a time clock or HR would be on the managers ass for not punching out for lunch.

HR is nonexistent at these places. Usually consists of an outsourced 800 number by a third party who processes it and sends it to the company HR who can't be assed.

Thanks for taking the time out to write all of that! I was starting to look for jobs, actually. I was planning to work weekends there because I won't lie and say that the money isn't good. For being in college I don't feel like I'll make as much somewhere else.

I was expecting the cattiness as soon I was hired. I don't mind gossip about me but when it's detrimental to my job and bills then it's a big issue.

The older girls are content with the management because they are favored. The ones that have been hired with and after me are bullied, too. Thats so childlike to say but that is how I can describe it best.

I figured if I was given a higher position such as head wait then MAYBE I would be respected more. I can't prove that if I'm constantly being brought up to the manager for whatever stupid reason they formulate.

My first job was at a cute little restaurant called zoe's kitchen. It wasn't exactly serving but it was the best job experience I had. I got two raises and moved up to a shift leader fairly quickly. They're a free-spirited and positive company that really valued employees and costumers. They sent cookies, gave free meals every shift, had acts of kindness weeks, etc so I guess that's what I was use to. I moved for school and briefly worked at a family owned restaurant serving. It wasn't that great but I always closed and was checker.

My current one doesn't fuck around.

My old one was shady as fuck. Given how hers is run, it's pretty telltale that their HR would be nonexistent. Check out Yelp reviews for Hooters. It's a common theme for dying chains with 2-3 star reviews across the board. They're all run the same.

If she wanted to be a real bitch, she could anonymously report the break violation. The higher ups may catch wind and crack down because they don't want to get sued. Companies like this are penny pinchers beyond reason and don't want to deal with potential suits.

...but they're also shady enough to find reasons to can someone who starts stirring the pot as well.

If I am fired I was thinking about telling the regional manager so at least the girls that are going through the same stuff can benefit.

Sound I call first or just straight up go in?

Mind you if I'm fired I don't want to walk out of there like a fucking idiot.

I doubt they'll fire you over the phone. You don't really have a choice. Do you think that this "meeting" is only being had to fire you? It doesn't really work that way usually. It's not unusual for there to be random meetings at times, whether it's to discuss morale, menu changes, new policies, etc.

Even if you do get fired, you could tell the regional manager. Whether or not it's taken seriously is another story, but at least you tried.

In the meantime, look for another serving job. Trust me dear, there are much better options out there than wearing skanky clothes at a dying restaurant chain. Are there other chains nearby that you could apply for?

1. My manager questioned why I was being skipped and I told her I had no control if no one was held accountable.

2. I've brought up issues to them but I haven't seen a change.

8. I lack the confidence and I never had to deal with being fired.

1. The manager approached you for a conversation about how procedure has been altered, and your answer to her was to attempt to accuse someone else for not doing their job. Read your answer you wrote in here. You attempted to lay blame, rather than assert your positive attributes to the boss for better positioning.

2. If you're bringing up issues, that means you're ratting people out, and complaining. If you're not a superior then it's not your place to decide what needs to be changed. If you feel changes need to be made, then you're the only one you can change. You could try by not being a tattle-tale. After all, that is what you're implying above. You're saying that you tattled on someone and expected an alteration to come from it. That's pretty presumptuous for the lowest man on the totem pole.

3. And here is where it’s obvious that you’re talking out of your ass because you got your panties twisted up your ass. We all know that there are labors laws, and all Restaurant establishments know that they would fined a minimum of $ 10,000.00 per infraction if caught breaking the labor laws. And Quite Frankly, a tattle tale, disgruntled employee with an attitude like yours, who goes behind other employees back to try and get them in trouble isn’t worth paying that hefty fine for. Every person reading your (story) here who has more than one brain cell realizes that this part was fabricated.

4. of course were you denied. If your boss, I would likely deny every request you have. Especially when I approached you to have a conversation about why procedure wasn’t being followed and your response to me was to tattle on someone, rather than what you should have done ….

5. A situation happened. You say she took it out of context when speaking, but, she could only do that if a situation actually happened to talk about. In this phrase, it sounds like again want to blame someone else for your bad actions, rather than take responsibility. You want us to think about how you are being punished for someone else’s wrong account of YOUR situation. That means, you caused a situation in where the bosses had to talk to other employees to find out what’s going on. I don’t see anything in your wallof-complaint in where you hold yourself accountable for a situation. Read what you wrote, “a situation out of context”. It’s your fault if you cause a situation and from the sounds of what you’ve written thus far, it sounds like you cause a lot of grief with your resentment and entitlement issues.

6. Why are you failing a mystery shopper? Are you that terrible at your job that you can’t pass this test? Here you are trying to make it sound like they are at fault for treating you bad … when in reality, you realize that you did a lousy job the night before. You’re working your way up to being fired and nobody ELSE is doing this to you. You do it to yourself by not caring about having enough honor to do the job that you get paid to do.

7. Here you go again expecting changes to be made in your favor, when you don’t even have enough respect for the job to be able to do it right enough to pass a test of your abilities. This shit isn’t just in your current position. If you act like this with any job you’re going to find the same outcomes. And then you go further to wonder if you should just go up there. To do what? Complain some more? As if you’re a class act at your job and so irreplaceable that you deserve to be honored?

Honored for what? Exactly? Having a pulse? You fail at every turn. You are so disregarded that they won’t do you any favors, you fail tests of your abilities and you tattle on your co-workers. But, you believe you are deserving of being valued for your opinion on what should be done?

8. You don’t lack confidence … you lack integrity.

Being the new girl is always the worst. I have seen it happen to girls at my last job. And it happens to me every time I get a new serving job. It's a waiting game.. (haha ) i feel like at these types of jobs, you just have to wait for seniority to come along.. slowly. ?
It helps when you don't give a fuck.

But unfortunately, in place like that, you're going to be surrounded and it makes it difficult to accomplish no fucks to give when you can't even go about your bidness without management being just as immature and catty.

There is a way to salvage your job, and land on your feet. But, it has nothing to do with approaching your boss with your ridiculous demands and expectations of other to cater to your ego.

... which is what you've presented here thus far.

The answer is to grow some dignity, to become the good person you strive to be. You could start by stop expecting your co-workers and supervisors to put you on an undeserved pedestal.

and follow through with that lesson by putting your positive attributes, REAL abilities, and a progressive and productive qualifications into your bosses mind ... then follow through with it, and actually be a good employee.

What utter bullshit ... what a defeatist attitude.

The millennials have no drive, no aspirations .. nothing to offer.

they just sit and complain that everything isn't handed to them
Google two week notice
Better to quit than be fired.

Give your two weeks notice and don't burn any bridges. You now have two weeks to find another job. The holiday season is approaching and everyone is hiring. Good luck.

HR is nonexistent at these places. Usually consists of an outsourced 800 number by a third party who processes it and sends it to the company HR who can't be assed.

I worked at a chain restaurant many many many (I'm old) years ago and they were very strict with the time cards and HR would call the managers. I realize this isn't common but it was worth a shot.

Regarding the note about dying businesses, I've noticed as well that the shittiest places to work are almost always the businesses that are headed towards the grave. Not just in the food service industries, but across most industries.

For example, Best Buy, Kmart, and Yahoo are known for treating employees like crap, and just look how well those companies are(n't) doing.

Unless you're literally one paycheck away from eviction, I would just quit that job and scoop up any job in the meantime until you find a better job for the longer term. I'd much rather clean houses for a month than work in a nasty, unprofessional environment like that and have a termination on record.

If you have any coworkers you're cool with, ask them to be your reference.

I love this quite honestly.

1.) NO. She wondered why I was getting crossed out as if I was asking to be skipped in rotation. The girls I work with were not sitting me and I don't have time to babysit the door to make sure I'm being sat. I told her that I don't know who is skipping me because it could of been anyone that was working. We didn't have a host so I couldn't answer her as to why I wasn't getting tables. This was months ago.

2.) I didn't tattle on anyone. She asked what I think could be better and I gave her my humble opinion.I gave that to her in hopes that it could improve the work environment. What matters is the intent behind it. I don't run to the managers every time someone has an attitude with me, but damn if I'm busting my ass and you aren't doing shit then yes..I'm not going to respond positively to asking me to do something. There's quite a difference between going to a manager whining about someone and offering advice/solutions when approached. As I mentioned.. I get frustrated because I do what I'm told because I don't want to deal with confrontation. Had you read what I said you would understand that this the point I'm trying to make.

3. I'll keep this simple. I live in Georgia and they don't have laws that give employees the right to a break. So try again.

4. Refer to above statements

5. A girl asked me if I WANTED to be skipped since the girl AFTER me wanted to be skipped. I was at the table that I sat literally 10 seconds before she ASKED me. So no, it wasn't my turn in rotation because I just sat somebody that second. I said YES, SKIP ME IF YOU CAN. She walked away and told my manager I WANTED TO BE SKIPPED. That is out of context and is not true to what happened. A complaint like this is what I'm talking about. It's just catty.

6. Technically they don't pay me? I don't get checks from them. We have a strict service platform (16 steps long) that is unrealistic to the point that most girls don't passed. So, I'm sure somewhere in the night I made a human error and skipped 1 step out of the 16 steps for the 10 tables I had. It's not hard to fail so I sure that it's possible.

7. As I mentioned I'm not the best employee. I make mistakes and I hold myself responsible for those. When I have those bad nights because 1.) I got 3 hours of sleep from closing the night before 2.) doing homework 3.) waking up for classes 4.) going straight to work then I don't feel the need to tattle on me for being lethargic. I don't do that to others. Unless they are consistently lazy I wouldn't feel the need to tell a manager. Most of them are lazy and I still don't even bring it up to them.

8. I'm sorry that integrity to you is being a housewife and packing your children's school lunches. I forgot that integrity to you isn't paying taxes for your generations retirement. The baby boomers have so much to criticize about millenials when they're a financial burden.

start looking around, if you need that tit-shack as a reference, let them know ... "i'm unsure of my future here, and am considering employment elsewhere" explain the unequal treatment if necessary, and let them know you may require a reference.

i'm the type of guy that threatens to follow co-workers who get paid more than me and fuck up more than me home and take shits on their cars if they piss me off though. so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Who are you? because you're the great person alive.

Oh that's what it is on your birth certificate?

I hired an office manager who was being mistreated at Twin Peaks. The Hooter's knock off they settled for 12k. What was shitty was that she didn't realize she was flirting during the interview to get her job. Thanks to assholes like your soon to be former manager.
I then made it clear that I'll never mistreat her or let anyone else mistreat her and I only expect her to do her job and have fun. Shouldn't have to be that way.

Did you guys get married and have kids?

Firstly it's BLATANT favoritism.

It's no secret the work place is not a level playing field. And people are very naive if they think it is. People enjoy working with people they like, which often inadvertently turns into favoritism. You have not been playing the office politics game.

Don't brown nose. Because you can't force people to like you. So it will be a carrot and a stick scenario. You will end up like the guy in the film 'The Apartment'. Instead play politics.

Remember though it's hooters...so are you really aiming to be there in five years?

Self promote. Don't think these people are your friends. Don't think they are your enemies.

Remember you won't know them in a few years and they don't mean anything in that way. They are colleagues.

The issue is a place like hooters forgive me ..is not merit driven. It's driven on your likability.

"The bar manager and new waitress are poo-poo-heads" will not get you very far.

"I believe we should implement a system of shift organization and tipping out based upon fairness to keep us all honest" is better.

Suggest a plan to make the workplace fairer.

And eventually quit.

Good luck :-)

Thank you so much! I love post like these.

I agree with everything. I should play politics better but it's really hard for me to pretend to be someone I'm not.

I hate being a people-pleaser and I rather be disliked for being myself. I just wish that my job was about my job and not about being liked by girls who make Hooters a career. I think I and all the newer girls get singled out for mistakes because people complain to the managers so much.

I think it's competition for girls so they feel like they need to sabotage them. Before our shift we do a quick meeting and basically all the girls bashed on the host saying she needs to be fired. She's not efficient at her job but it's not the time or place to say that. My manager fed into it and basically said they were looking for a new host. It's just catty and it makes me sick.

I anticipated a lot of this but I was also naive to think grown women could be respectful to one another.

Pfft. My workplace is surrounded with grown women who behave like it's high school. I generally don't interact with these hoes and keep talking to them at a minimum with just every day pleasantries.

I had one tonight laughing at one of the newer girls who dropped a stack of plates in the lobby. I just looked at her like she was a fucking idiot and asked her if laughing was really what needed to be done at that moment.

Fortunately, we have an okay balance seeing as we have normal people and asshats like the ones you deal with. If someone's out of line, they get called out on it.

But remember, it IS a restaurant. You've got the types that are there who are just working to get bills paid and others who really have no life ambition and never matured beyond high school.

HR is nonexistent at these places. Usually consists of an outsourced 800 number by a third party who processes it and sends it to the company HR who can't be assed.

Of course. The business is struggling so they start cracking down on finances- hours, management incentives, etc. The quality of work environment stops mattering since they're insanely fixated on finances since they're struggling. Morale drops in all the ranks and the mistreatment of the employees starts to skyrocket. A lot of the time, because management isn't properly educated in how to make this work, they do it all wrong, fixate on hours, running bare minimum to make their bonuses happen, and pile on work loads to the skeleton crew they choose to run all the time. This leads to a miserable work environment for the employees.

This is why you see only two registers open at places like this. Loong lines, but only two open because the manager is either really cheap or the DM gave too few hours for the manager to work with. Same when you go into a restaurant and see a server taking on 8-9 table sections and struggling to keep up- too cheap to keep enough on the floor to run things efficiently. Everyone suffers.

It's a total domino effect from the higher ups on downward.
