Hi so ironic because I was in a relationship with a cancer man about 3 years ago. He left to college and the summer before leaving he broke it off with me. His excuse was that he didn't want someone holding him back in this new experince (aka studying abroad). Tbh, there were other factors I feel that led to the break up, I wasn't supportive and would constantly cry about it (we were 17 and I was immature). We tried to get back after about a year and he told me it was hard for him to adjust but when he did he missed me but I had moved on. Yet, my best friend has been in a long distance relationship, it's hard but cancers are very loyal and when they like someone they don't care what they have to do to keep you.

They can, but prefer not to.
How do I persuade him to have one?

You can't persuade a Cancer to do anything they don't want to do. So regardless of what you say or do, they will make that decision on their own. Sometimes, they will treat you still as a significant other, but won't give you a "title" per say, but you will still be important. But until you guys are in the same area, commitment won't likely happen.
