Unriddling a Cancer guy

I'm going out with this Cancer guy but we don't have a serious relationship. In fact we haven't discussed our relationship at all.. This makes me wonder how would I know if he wants to have a serious commitment with me? What do Cancers do to show their desire for commitment?
Also, sometimes he acts kinda withdrawn, which I know is a common Cancer trait, and I try to be patient with him but I never know if there is something that I did wrong.
Once after some period of silence I texted him "Are you angry at me?" and he texted me "I hate this question." Does that mean that he's angry or not?
I'm a Sag, so I like to make everything clear and these kind of riddles confuse me a lot.
