WHAT HAPPENS TO A CAPRICORN THAT MAKES THEM GO TO THE DARK SIDE. ITS LIKE CHURCHILL SAID IF YOU ARE A CONSERVITIVE AT 21 YOU HAVE NO HEART. BUT IF YOUR A LIBERAL AT 31 YOU HAVE NO MIND. SO I CAN UNDERSTAND A YOUNG CAP BEING A LIB BUT ONCE THEY AGE HOW CAN THEY NOT SEE THAT THEY ARE HEADING DOWN THE ROAD OF NO RETURN?

I'm a conservative. However, when I was really young, I considered myself a liberal. Things changed with age, maturity and income levels.
I realized I was more republican in a government class my junior year in college (just took me a while to fully change over). Each wall had a chalk board. On the first day of class, the professor had listed out a stance if issues (guns, abortion, taxes, etc) on each board. Had us tick mark which one we had more aggreements with. Then he told us which board were dem/rep. I was surprised to align with the rep party on my thoughts/opinions. I was a journalism major - considered myself a dem. (most media people are dems).
My dad was a democrat until he started his own business. His opinions changed pretty quick.

So NOT true! The way I see it, in rather simplistic terms, is that Republicans, in general, are focused on themselves and what is good solely for them - fuck everyone else. Democrats are more for the good of all and want equal opportunity so that everyone has a chance to succeed.
Corresponding to my perspective is that numerous "studies point toward conservatives?? tendency to avoid something called self-harm, while liberals avoid collective group harm."
There is also some research out there which suggests that conservatives and liberals actually have different brains. What they found was that "Democrats had larger anterior cingulate cortexes, which are associated with tolerance to uncertainty, while Republicans had larger right amygdalas, which are associated with sensitivity to fear."
Some other related tid bits from various studies:
"Conservatives spend more time looking at unpleasant images, and liberals spend more time looking at pleasant images." (this would explain what I view conservatives as focusing more-so on the evils in the world than liberals)
"Reliance on quick, efficient, and "low effort" thought processes yields conservative ideologies, while effortful and deliberate reasoning yields liberal ideologies." (which brings us to the question as to why a Cap would NOT be a liberal?)
"Conservatives react more strongly than liberals to disgusting images, such as a picture of someone eating worms." Similarly, from another study, "Conservatives tend to have a stronger reaction to threatening noises and images than liberals." (can we say weak?)

Unless you can successfully paint "Liberalism" and "Conservatism" as broadly as possible (which might dilute the definitions anyway), the definitions change (or rather, they aren't the same) from region to region.
Conservatism in Canada, for example, is quite different from Conservatism in the US. Our Conservatives often resemble the US Democrats a great deal more than the US Republican Party. There is no such thing as the "far right" up here. Also, it depends on the political infrastructure. Brokerage Politics, for example, will change the priorities of Conservatives functioning in that system.
British Conservatism isn't the same as American Conservatism, and even American Conservatism has changed in fundamental ways from what it was 40-50 years ago.
Moreover, are we talking about Social Conservatives or Fiscal Conservatives? How far right or how close to the centre?
For instance, the Conservatives in the US who lean farthest to the right seem mentally ill, while the Conservatives in Canada just seem unduly uptight, though socially quite Liberal.
You make a good point, the terms conservative and liberal are not static and do indeed exist on a continuum. However, despite differences in definition throughout the world and perceptions of how off the deepend one is in their thinking (e.g., far right wing), from an ideological perspective I would argue that the basic tenets of conservative and liberal thinking are not all that different.
I'll try to come back to this and address social conservatives vs fiscal conservatives - I have to go for now.

Im not that deep into it all. I vote for whoever has a solid plan and a heart. Its extremely easy to not gaf about the next person, and I think we need less of that mentality.
My mother was a single parent that recieved no govt assistance and no child support, and NOT because she didnt need it either. She worked where she had to so we could survive and she didnt look for handouts on her journey.
More recently over the years she landed a job that paid a decent salary, but with commission and since she is good in sales she started making big money.
Ill put it like this, within the last four yrs she's paid a bit over 100k in taxes, with NO real complaints. The govt never helped her, so its not as if shes paying it back in anyway. Lovely thing is, she'd stll help people in need, whether hungry, if they needed shoes/clothes, cash etc. Thats how WE were raised.
So ive watched someone dish it out big in taxes and not complain. A free ride to.where exactly is my question? The destination more than likely will not be the same so who the h&ll cares about having to contribute in some way. I dont get it.

Let's just stir up a shit storm, go back to the 1930s and cut all funding to "socialist" programs - welfare, Medicare, disability, college tuition, etc. Stop taking those taxes out of our checks and let everyone be on their own. Get a job, find a way to make money or starve. Sow the fruits of your own labor. Plant a garden for food. Get sick - pay the bill yourself. Get injured - find another type of job. Lose your house - move in with relatives.

Welfare recipients should have to "work" to draw welfare - picking litter off the highway, babysitting for those picking up litter, some kind of community service. It shouldn't be a free ride. AND THEY NEED TO BE DRUG TESTED. I have to be, why don't they?
And food stamps should only be used for basic food groups - not candy, cigarettes, etc.
When I was laid off - yes, I drew unemployment for four months. Because of my previous income level, I was allowed to draw the maximum amount. But, here's the sad thought - I was making about $ 10 an hour on unemployment - why should I take a $ 10 an hour job? That's the mentality that is encouraged inadvertently. Thank God I found another job in my field!
All in all, I'm tired of paying taxes to finance those who cheat the system! Not saying every one in these programs does, but there are a lot who do. I do think these programs need to be in place, but they definitely need improvement and need to be policed better.
So, how much flack am I going to get for saying these things? Probably a lot. But, there are a lot of people who think like I do.
