Adult tonsillectomy

I’m thinking about getting my tonsils removed but I heard the pain is worse for adults than kids because of scar tissue or sumn.

Has anyone here had their tonsils removed as an adult and lived through the pain? I was also wondering if they prescribe the good pain medicine afterwards or if it’s just high dosage Advil?

I’m scared but my rate of tonsilitis is too damn high.
There's something to be said about having your tonsils removed. I'd say don't do it.

My dad had his tonsils removed when he was younger (late teens) because he kept getting tonsilitis. So when he started getting throat infections and other complications later in his life, he found out that removing his tonsils was like removing his first line of defense against other infections.

The tonsils are there for a reason.

I feel like I’ve heard something like this, but then other people insist tonsils are a useless part of the body. I’m just confused.

Go get a doctor's advice. Get 2 if you need to. There might be a very good reason for you to have them removed. It was a doctor who told my dad his tonsils should never have been removed. Over 2.5 decades he kept getting coughs and throat infections that kept coming back. At one point he had a cough that lasted almost a decade.

I feel like it may depend on the individual. As you can see in my dad's case it didn't actually reduce his chances of getting throat infections.

Was he a smoker? I know that can weaken the immune system.

He wasn't a smoker when he had his tonsils removed. But yes later in adulthood he picked up smoking. Tried to quit when his cough kept coming back but I think the damage was already done.

I had mine removed a couple of years ago

The surgery went well—closed my eyes and I was gone. When I opened them, it was over

Recovery took me 2 weeks

It is very painful and mostly annoying because swallowing your food is painful. But you have to eat and it is recommended that you keep swallowing—working your throat

I didn’t have solid food for those 2 weeks

I was prescribed liquid hydrocodone, a narcotic. It’s pretty strong but the dosage I was prescribed was too high for my body so the 2nd time I took it, I had symptoms of overdose and so I went without taking pain meds for the rest of the time which is probably why it was so painful

Your ears are going to ache horribly

Ice pops are nice but let it warm up in your mouth first, Don’t go with anything too freezing because that hurts

I basically ate broth and mashed potatoes but both of those were hard to get down

You’re going to lose 10 lbs and you won’t poop for a work or so. It will be black from the blood you swallowed during your surgery

After a week, my throat started bleeding because a scab came loose, so I went to emergency but they didn’t do anything. It stopped bleeding eventually by itself

I think it’s all worth it though

Just two weeks of pain and misery but I’m really happy with my results 😊 I don’t regret it

This is very helpful, thank you smile After I switch insurances imma see if I can get it done!

I’ve never had my tonsils removed, but seeing Gerald from Hey Arnold! get a tonsillectomy and his voice deepening to a late night R&B radio host’s voice had me kind of curious to get a strong bedroom voice.

Surprisingly, I know zero people who have had their tonsils removed

And your comment about tonsil stones... ewww so cringe. I’ve been considering asking my dentist to check for them, but I’m scared of having them extracted if I do have it. It’s sooooooo grosssssss

I don’t even know why I get them because I am big on dental hygiene. I’ll literally remove the stones before bed & rinse with mouthwash afterwards, and the next morning small ones will be there again! I think I’m having an ongoing infection.
I had mine removed in my 20s. I had very large ones and got them removed because I had sleep apnea. Was not breathing when I slept.

It was an experience. Gave me liquid pain killers. 2 weeks of recovery. And then it was done. With any kind of surgery there is a recovery time but then it's over.

We all have them intact. For the reason Ram stated.

So I wouldn’t let my child’s removed.

She was snoring badly and getting throat infections so we gave up.

She was agonizing for 10 days...as dictor told us it’ll take 10 days...on day 11 everything just stopped!!! She is happy we had done it because now she sleeping like a baby.

Yeas...on about day 9 she collapsed from dehydration...I was mortified...

So my advice if they aren’t affecting your life - keep them.

Only get out if you really have to. 😘
