Does apple cider really do all they say it does? Or is it a total waste of time?
*apple cider vinegar.
Hi, brianafay.

ACV is known for its healing properties and has been used to address a number of ailments for centuries.
It is important to note, however, that natural doesn't always mean "safe". With this in mind, it is in your best interest to research and inform your health care providers of your regimen.
I take ACV in liquid form for its antiglycemic effects.
Personally, I would not consume more than a few teaspoons (orally) per day. Naturally, the acidity of vinegar will gradually DESTROY YOUR TEETH, by corroding the enamel. To avoid this, use a straw so that it doesn't make direct contact with your teeth. If you do not have a straw, I would recommend drinking within ten minutes (as opposed to sipping throughout the day) and brush immediately afterward. ACT mouthwash is good for maintaing and restoring enamel as well. As you can see, I love my teeth (cuz they're pretty) and want to keep it that way, lol.
Otherwise, ACV is also a good skin toner, as it penetrates deeply. It works fabulously on the hair as a detangler and provides natural shine. smile
Hope this helps!
Haha. Thanks. smile
I just heard it flushed out your system. I didn't know it did all that.
Supposed to be good for your skin too if you drink it.
I'd been thinking about trying it out but not sure where to find it, would a grocery store carry it and in which aisle would it be?
If you're only taking a few tablespoons orally a day... why not just take it like a shot since supposedly it tastes pretty bad? And then just drink swish some water to keep it from wearing your teeth down.
""...would a grocery store carry it and in which aisle would it be?""
Most should. I shop mostly at Trader Joe's, and find mine in the aisle near the spices.

""why not just take it like a shot since supposedly it tastes pretty bad?""
I'll admit, I tried that once when I was in a rush, and it BURNED terribly. Best to dilute it.
I picked up a bottle of Heinz apple cider. Guess there's probably not much difference in effect on brands?
And yeah, it did actually burn a bit... It's almost like taking a shot of liquor but burns even more...
How much of it do you actually take a day? And on an empty stomach or with food? I just ended up just drinking a few swigs right from the bottle... think I might've drank a few tablespoons worth haha.
I meant apple cider "vinegar".
I mixed mine in with hot water and honey. It was like drinking hot tea. Not bad. A little funky but bearable.
""How much of it do you actually take a day?""
- I would say about 3-4 teaspoons per day.

""And on an empty stomach or with food?""
- I take it right before meals because of its studied antiglycemic effect. In place of Metformin. So far, I think it is helping, but I'll have to wait to see if my body builds up resistance. AND, I've lost 5 pounds in like, 3 weeks! lol
""Sounds like you're taking a proactive approach to staying healthy. Good for you!""
Thanks, MsP. smile
At one time, I was without health insurance and couldn't pay for prescriptions for 2 years. So I had no choice but to do my own research in order to find natural/affordable ways to manage my symptoms. It has been difficult at times, but in the process, I've learned a lot about how my body responds and what has the potential to exacerbate my problems, etc.
Update: I've stopped this. It was destroying me both internally and externally. I had begun looking like there was something terribly wrong with me.
I still use it on my hair, but nothing else.
Mind telling us some of the symptoms you were experiencing?
Virgin coconut oil has lots of healthy fats in it.
""Mind telling us some of the symptoms you were experiencing?""

- My stomach became extremely bloated and my skin began to look like it was being stripped- like I'd gotten into a fight with a rat, lol. It has been over a week since I discontinued ACV and my condition seems to be improving.
It appears to me that this acts as a detox, and is a routine that should be done only periodically, or for some limited amount of time. The frequency at which I was consuming ACV was excessive, in my case. But, you live and you learn, right?
On the bright side, I've lost 10 pounds in less than 6 weeks, and I suspect much of this can be attributed to the ACV.
Just be careful, Xun. Pay close attention to how your body reacts and be sure to dilute it accordingly.

Good luck, my dear e-friend!
Yea, the stuff can be pretty acidic and I've read of people actually burning the tissue inside their throat from drinking too much of it straight up.
I was just taking a small swig of it everyday and I can definitely see it causing some internal damage if you drink too much without diluting it.
Glad to hear you're recovering fine. I think with a lot of liver detox programs you only do a cycle for a short period of time (not sure how short) and then stop and maybe do it again a few months later as stuff builds up in your system again that needs to be cleared out.
Because from what I've read, the ACV in pill form for the most part, doesn't contain much ACV. lol I've yet to read of any effective results gained from taking ACV in pill form.
Briana - I have come across several different receipes for ACV cleanses. I personally have never done one but people swear by them. People with huge gallstones claim of being able to pass them with no problem. If you decide to do a cleanse, make sure to take some time off because most likely you will be spending tons of time in the bathroom. There are also cleanses you can buy at the natural store. I know the company Flora has one on the market that is supposed to be very good. I went to one of their educational sessions on digestion.
I recently went to a digestion seminar provided by a doctor here in my town and there is controversy on digestive cleansing. One doctor says our digestive walls were never meant to be that clean. The problem with that is when you cleanse you also remove the good bacteria. That is what helps combat disease. So this makes sense to me. He is an advocate for raw milk (a.k.a unpasturized milk good natural probiotic) So if you cleans make sure to get a good quality probiotic to get the good bacteria back in your body. Another education on flora products says we should cleanse 4 times a year (each season we eat different foods) because of all the toxins we consume from pesticides, medications (this is a big one), from the air we breath. I could agree about the all medications but I am also conscience this guy wants me to buy his products. lol
There is also good things you can do for digestion by consuming foods that contain bitters i.e. lemon in water excellent, kal, cabbage, etc.
I am not even sure if this is why you are inquiring about ACV but usually that is the case. Just be careful if you decide to do a cleanse and read as much as you can. I personally take a supplement liver detox for GI. That seems to work, but the problem with that...the minute I stop taking it ....it seems like starting all over again. I don't want to live the rest of my life on a supplement. *Sigh* I guess I just need to keep striving for eating better.

Virgin coconut oil has lots of healthy fats in it.

Actually there is truth and non-truth in this.
This is hydrogenated coconut oil which is usually used for cooking.
91% Saturated fat (this is the highest of any other oil on the market). There is 2% omega-6 (which is bad for us) and 0% omega-3 (good for us)
Now I think when you are talking about "virgin" you are referring to non-hydrogenated coconut milk or coconut oil that you eat. Yes this is good for you.
The difference is hydrogenated is usually processed and stripped of vital nutrients. So if you you virgin, yes it is very good, but don't use it for cooking. smile
PD
Yup, virgin coconut oil. Tongue
There's also macadamia nut oil which is supposed to be good for you as well which I haven't looked into.
I'm pretty sure your body needs some Omega-6 to balance things out but Omega-3 is definitely the one that's touted as being more healthy for you. Your body can actually convert Omega-6 into Omega-3 if it needs to but it doesn't do it very well so you need a direct source of Omega-3's.
I had read somewhere that Saturated Fats are good for you and quite necessary, they're only seen as being bad because the studies that were done clumped saturated and trans fats together in the group claiming that they're all bad for you. Can't remember the source I got that from though.
And yup, hydrogenated stuff is really unhealthy so try to avoid that stuff like the plague.
Wow Taurus 83 ....you are talking my lingo!!! I love to talk health!!!
FYI - For cooking the best oil to use is canola. It has the right amount of omega 3 &6.
I have not heard of the macadamia nut oil. I will have to look into.
I do agree with you about a healthy of saturated fats. In my opinion what is killing us is this over consumption of white bleached processed wheat and rice. Also the fact that they use sugar in EVERYTHING. Our taste buds have grown so accustomed to this and in turn we over consume on these empty calories that never make us feel completely full and make us gain lots of weight. They also produce an unhealthy amount of AcH in our bodies which cause inflammation and the reason we see lots of disease on the rise i.e. Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Arthritis
