Chemotherapy + COVID vaccine

This topic was created in the Health forum by Whorpio on Friday, March 5, 2021 and has 41 replies.
Do you or someone you know have first hand experience of what it’s like to get the coronavirus vaccine while undergoing chemo?

I got the first dose of Moderna yesterday, and it has beat the shit out of me.

I am not on chemo, but my dad is and he is expected to get his first Moderna dose next week. Based on how my healthy (although I do have mild asthma) 25-year-old body is struggling, I am now very nervous about how the vaccine will treat my immunocompromised dad. He has asthma as well, on top of receiving chemo every other week.

Should I tell him to wait until the Johnson/Johnson vax arrives in his area? Any first hand accounts for what he should expect?

One of my friends’ dads “beat” cancer, but still has to take chemo pills to keep it at bay, and she said after getting the second dose of Moderna he thought the Moderna was messing with his chemo pills, that he thought he was about to die (I haven’t got an update on his condition yet because it happened recently).

My dad recently got the shingles vaccine (or maybe it was the pneumonia vax) and said that was pretty bad. Is the covid vax supposed to be worse than that?
He should ask his doctor not us tbh.

His doctors recommend at least one dose, but I’m still scared. He didn’t really answer when I asked if his doctors have other active cancer patients who have been vaccinated. I’m just asking for my own peace of mind.
That said. It hits everyone different. I had it rough, co worker was fine with first round. I have underlining health issues but I rebounded after a day or so. She was totally fine, only has asthma and 62.

A lot of people I’ve known have had either the symptoms above or just been extremely lethargic. Chemotherapy suppresses the immune system, so a few uncomfortable symptoms from the vaccine for 24 hours is probably much better than the actual virus at any point.

Have him talk to his doctor. ASAP. If anything mRNA is better than Johnson Johnson for auto immune I read. Cuz Johnson n Johnson is a real virus
The side effects are driven by your own immune system, not the vaccine.

A "weakened" or older immune system would react less.
I don't know why any of you would consider the side effects described as "bad". Compared to what? A walk in the park...?

Stop being such pussies!

Besides, there is something known as "nocebo" effect, the opposite of placebo. The more you fear the effects, the more likely you are to get them! Powerful stuff, both of them.
My mothers friend who she went to high school with died from the vaccine he was only 69yrs old, all his internal organs collapsed on him and was on life support for a day before he died. The thing is they wont actually tell you the serious side effects of this "vaccine" just the mild symptoms. Just an fyi

Yeah, I heard through the grapevine, I don't know what she actually died of, and neither does the person who told me, or the person who told them, or the one from before them.....but let's spread rumours, since there are people out there who financially benefit of the pandemic, manipulating all of you, ignorants.

Many people who are sick are vaccinated just because they are sick, and eventually they die of what they had, no?

Tbh I was expecting it to be a walk in the park. Aside from arm pain, I was fine the first 2 hours but then I started having random but mild symptoms, making me think I was crazy. Then all the severe symptoms hit me like a train several hours later.

What you said about the immune response makes sense though. I didn’t think of it like that, so thank you.

I am frustrated! My own mother is one of these idiots. She's probably going to die of Covid this year or the next. She's got pharmacists, medics and molecular biologists who care about her, in her own family, but she doesn't listen to them. She listens instead to people she doesn't know, who have an agenda, and are good at manipulating people.

Not everyone can be helped. Someone undecided, maybe. Someone who takes rumours for facts, and even spreads them on online platforms...he/she is not going to change their mind.
Listen I’d rather be down for two weeks with uncomfortable symptoms, no walk in park than die. There is Tylenol make it more confortable

Talking down to them probably won't help either. Regardless, everybody has free will to decide what they want for themselves. Eventually, even the most hard-headed of us will take the vaccine. At our most basic lizard brain level, nobody wants to miss out of an opportunity.

Yeah, I hope you are right. Unfortunately, mother is triple fixed. It is estimated that as many of 30% will refuse the vaccine. Initially, they went on and on about not wanting to be a "lab rat". Fine! Hundred of millions of successfully vaccinated people later, and they are still in denial.

I think the scariest thing about the vaccine is after you get they don't for sure if you can pass it to someone else
Actually, it IS now sure. Keep up!

I’m pretty sure I had covid last March, and it wasn’t as bad as the vaccine side effects. I think that’s one reason I was shocked by what I’ve experienced in the past 24 hours.

Here’s something my mom told me today. My dad had chemo yesterday and the guy he sat next to apparently got vaccinated while he still had his pump on (when you leave the chemo center you still have to wear a pump that pumps chemicals into your body until the next day). Anyways, this guy said he didn’t have any side effects at all.

Maybe Undine is correct: the stronger your immune system is, the harder your symptoms will be. Likewise, the weaker it is, the less effects you’ll feel.

The vaccine hits everyone differently. My sister and I got ours together- I only had a sore arm while she had fever, body ache, chills and a headache. So that goes to show you how differently it can impact even people of the same genetic makeup.

A lot of people I’ve known have had either the symptoms above or just been extremely lethargic. Chemotherapy suppresses the immune system, so a few uncomfortable symptoms from the vaccine for 24 hours is probably much better than the actual virus at any point.

Ayy today I’m having fever and body aches as well, and shortness of breath. Yesterday there was also chills; it felt like my bones were frostbitten 🥶

I hate how unpredictable it is, and that it does treat everyone differently. I wish we could all just have uniformly positive vaccine experiences.

Zoonotic diseases are almost impossible to predict once they land in humans. I'm still looking for my first vaccine.

I have never had a flu shot in my life so maybe that’s why it was rough for me, I do have hashimotos autoimmune and type 2 diabetes so I expected some side effects tbh. I’m just trying to not freak myself out for my 2nd dose tomorrow.

I'm jealous. I don't understand how everyone is getting the vaccine.

My mother is 71 and she still hasn't gotten the okay to schedule (Upstate NY)

I am not allowed to register....they are only at 55 and older starting next week (IN)

Essential workers or front line workers.

I provide housing it’s part of infrastructure and have underling hence I was able to get it.

Not in Texas, nope.

Wtf are you talking about? It’s super easy to get the vaccine here. I was surprised they didn’t ask for proof of my asthma, because I figured if they knew it was mild enough that I don’t even rely on an inhaler then they might turn me away. With the excessive funding and doses we have, the least they are concerned about is the “wrong” people getting vaccinated. People are deadass traveling here from other states so they can get vaccinated.

I signed up in January 👀 Waiting 7 weeks for an appointment is better than waiting several months for the books to open up.

50% of people have a reaction to the vaccine. What are you so scared of?

I was scared of my dad dying from it 😰 But from what I now understand he will have a less severe reaction than me since his immune system is weakened.
Tricky decision for your father to make.

For me, I wouldn't touch the vaccine right now. The vaccines have not completed their tests and are not due to finish until at least the end of 2022 or 2023 depending on manufacture. They have only been approved under emergency use. There have not been tests on how the vaccine may or may not affect anyone with other conditions or those taking any type of medication etc. With a 99.97% survival rate for covid, and with reports of deaths, injuries and illness that may or may not be linked to the vaccine I will take my chances for now over an unknown, untested vaccine that does not prevent you from getting covid and that does not prevent you from spreading covid. If anything changes in the future then I will reassess.

Presigning was not an option for me.

Should’ve utilized this website before it closed off https://covid19.sanantonio.gov/Services/Vaccination-for-COVID-19.

I did hear a lot of Texans from rural areas are traveling to the DFW area to get the vaccine as well; I guess that explains why my county website said you don’t need to be a resident of the county to sign up 🤣

you're a idiot pretending to be something you're not "Vaccines are made by taking viruses or bacteria and weakening them so that they can't reproduce (or replicate) themselves very well or so that they can't replicate at all. Children given vaccines are exposed to enough of the virus or bacteria to develop immunity, but not enough to make them sick." Heres another source. What are the ingredients in a vaccine?

Vaccines contain tiny fragments of the disease-causing organism or the blueprints for making the tiny fragments. They also contain other ingredients to keep the vaccine safe and effective. Stright from WHO

How superficial of you to google a general principle of vaccination, historically used! You failed the test, student! No, the vaccine does NOT give you Covid, as you previously claimed. Look up again. I give you a clue: just google Covid-19 vaccines, how difficult is that? This site, for example is for lay people: https://vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk/vk/covid-19-vaccines

Here is an extract:

"Newer vaccines such as mRNA vaccines and viral vectored vaccines, including the Oxford ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine differ from many traditional vaccines in the way they activate the immune system. Most traditional vaccines inject the antigen (part of the disease that stimulates an immune response) directly into the body. See types of vaccine for information about how different types of vaccines work.

In contrast, these two newer approaches deliver the genetic instructions for the antigen to the body’s cells. The cells then manufacture the antigen which goes on to stimulate the immune response. Injecting genetic material has raised questions about the use of these vaccines, such as whether they can modify the DNA of those receiving them. Here, we will explain why this is not possible."

This thread is about a father who decided to take the jab, and his daughter asking about possible side effects.

And here you are, commenting that a man in his 60es died days after talking the jab. If you would have bothered to informed yourself beforehand, you could have found, based upon evidence from 130 millions of people vaccinated so far, that the main vaccines were excellent at protecting against Covid-19 (aka saving millions of lives) and also extremely unlikely to cause serious side effects resulting in death.

The latter is because the number of people who died out of 130 millions vaccinated, is actually LOWER than the number of people expected to die from natural causes during the same time, out of 130 millions of similar age and habitat.

I have a question for you: What if the father changes his mind and refuses the jab, based upon your story, and subsequently dies of Covid-19? WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE MORALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS DEATH? YES OR NOT?

And don’t avoid an answer by turning the question on me. It is you who came here trying to change his mind (through his daughter)! Otherwise, what was your point, huh? Do you realize that spreading such disinformed stories may actually KILL people?

@Whorpio, what was the outcome?

Pushed back to next week because the doctor had the Pfizer branded vax and couldn’t ensure there would be a second dose available in 3 weeks so my dad got on the county wait list, but also made an appointment for next week with a different doctor who has the Moderna vax. So if the county calls before his appointment with the different doctor then he’ll get vaccinated sooner, but rn it’s looking like March 17 will be his 1st dose
I think it's better not.. a person who is undergoing chemo has lower immune level.. but hey, I'm not a doc .. so.
There's no answer to this as everyone's bodies react differently to jabs, meds booze etc

I guess it's trial and error

@whorpio how did your dad tolerate/handle the vaccine?

Great!

Now he’s in Europe living his best life. I’m joining him Sunday.
