Ear congestion

This topic was created in the Health forum by Deedee86 on Saturday, November 26, 2016 and has 27 replies.
I'm hoping someone can help me here. Last week I had a little cold followed by 2 days of bad allergies due to the crazy weather. That is all gone but it left me with plugged ears. I have never experienced this before and I'm on day 6! I have tried OTC decongestants and ear drops with no help, I tried swimmers ear drops but they burned. Warm olive oil didn't help either. I desperately need to dry my ears out. I am not in any pain but I can barely hear and I have to work tonight and tomorrow.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Uhhh go to the doctor? Lol

This happened to me once and I didn't go to the doctor. It lasted off and on for a month and it was hell because I could hardly hear anyone's coffee orders or hear myself calling out drinks.

No insurance plus it's a Saturday so my primary care or urgent care clinic are closed. I don't want to clog the er.

Did yours go away on its own or did you take something?

It went away on its own but it took forever.

I better learn to lip read!

Have you tried ear candles?

Scrap that. Read up on it now and seems it does not work. Can actually do damage
try a decongestant see if that works

I did. The first one made me drowsy so today I bought a non drowsy one recommended by the pharmacist. So far it hasn't helped but it's only been 2 hours. I feel the fluid swishing around in there.

I got someone to cover for me at work tonight but I have to be there tomorrow. That gives me 14 hours to find a solution.

More than likely if your ears are "closed" and it was after being sick or having a cold and some allergies. You may have developed an ENT infection. Which usually entails a sore throat at times, but a super clogged ear to throat canal. A way to lessen the pressure is to massage your maxilla

And your ear to throat gland.

A good homeopath remedy thats worked for me is taking a piece of garlic preferably thing and long like a rectangle not longer than have of your index finger and frying it up a little in olive oil and then biting on it with your teeth in the back. The juices extracted from this will help clear up the congestion in that area.

Thank you ! I am going to try it now. Luckily I love garlic. I may stink at work tommorow but at least I will hear.

*now that I started to massage that gland I notice that it is really swollen, like a baseball!

Thank you. I have peroxide in the house and will give it a shot.

I have tea tree oil and raw honey in the house. I will have to make a run to the store for ginger and eucalyptus oil. I'm gonna try everything until I fix this.

I appreciate all the suggestions. Thank you

Get peroxide! Or collidal silver too

That is going to kill the infection from the inside

When u put on ear drops let it sit for 15 min at a time 2x-3x a day

Then put in nostril

I'm doing the peroxide as we speak. I hear it bubbling in my ear which is a good sign.

Have any of these suggestions worked for you, OP?

I think that the peroxide has helped the most. I've been using it 3 times per day. I made I through work yesterday and by night my ears were hurting. I saw my dr this morning and was diagnosed with a dbl ear infection in both ears and was prescribed an antibiotic. The pain has gone away but I still having trouble hearing. It's a little better though. I'm actually dropping peroxide in at this very moment because I am headed back to work in a few.

Ouch, feel better Sad

I'm battling tropical ear myself, & it sucks.

I'm sorry. That sucks. Is anything helping? I need all the tips I can get.

What @Deadstool said

It's an ear infection. I lost partial hearing in my left ear because of that.

You can also try onions, apart from garlic.

Was the hearing loss permanent? How did that happen?

Ended up having to see a specialist and have the infection suctioned out, & i have to continue using ear drops which irritate my ear so much. For 5 more nights. Ugh wish me luck Sad

NEVER EVER EVER go underwater in a hot tub and then let there be water stuck in the ears after. My lesson has been fucking learned.

Sorry for the TMI. Sad Hopefully your recovery will be easier.

You should def confirm if ur infection is bacterial or fungal though. If you get treated for the wrong type, it could make it worse.

That's sounds like a nightmare.

Bacterial or fungal? My dr wasn't very thorough. She just took a quick look, asked some questions and sent me on my way.

In my case, fungal. But I would def try to go back and get them to take a lab sample of your ear to determine for sure. I wouldn't be very confident if a doctor just took a quick peek. Might cost money, but could be saving lots more if it prevents the problem from getting worse

It's permanent, although only partial. I still can hear with my left, albeit not too well. Talk on my left side and you'll have me asking you to repeat yourself.

I was a kid, had a bout of flu that caused a build up of wax in my ear that subsequently caused an infection. I didn't complain though until it started to hurt like a bitch (sharp stabbing pain). By the time the doc got to it (draining the wax and then ear drops and antibiotics) the infection had caused some damage to my eardrum.

That scares me. Hopefully I got to it in time. It's been plugged for a little over a week but didn't start hurting until yesterday. Before then it was just annoying. The pain did go away within a day of starting antibiotics though.

That's great to hear. I hope you continue to get better!
These ears!!!!!

I ended up back at urgent care last night. I went to work after my last posts and just felt like death. I was stumbling around with vertigo and started running a fever. It was only a four hour "after hours" shift so luckily I didn't have customers to deal with but all my coworkers thought I was mad at them because I was so quiet. Usually I am entertaining everyone with stories and songs.

After work (6am), I took a nap but woke up in the afternoon in excruciating pain and I 103 fever. I couldn't go to urgent care right away because I needed to get someone to pick up my kids and take care of dinner so I tried ibuprofen and heat.

When I finally got to the dr they determined that my left ear drum was ruptured. I got stronger antibiotics as well as antibiotic ear drops. The dr said there may be something stuck in my ear but it was hard to tell because of all the puss (yuck sorry tmi). I don't use qtips or anything so I'm not sure what it could be. He didn't want to flush or try and remove it until the infection is down a bit so I have to go back tomorrow. My right is is almost better but my left ear is on fire! I only have about 5-10% hearing in it right now and I'm getting nervous. I really really hope that my hearing comes back. And what the hell could be stuck in my ear?
Update:

The antibiotics did not help me and I kept getting worse. I went back to the urgent care two days later (last night) feeling like hell. My fever was 103f, I had zero hearing, taste or smell, my head and face were buzzing and there was a sharp pain in my throat. Every step was difficult because I was so weak.

They took one look at me and brought me in front of the line. An ENT specialist came in and determined that there definitely was something in my ear. He managed to get it out and lo and behold, it was cotton. Not a small amount like a qtip either. It was probably half of a cotton ball. I was using ear drops and putting a cotton ball in my ear to stop it from leaking everywhere but it was barely inside. I can't imagine how that ended up so far up my ear that it couldn't be seen by the doctor.

My hearing, sense of smell and taste came back within minutes of it being removed. My eardrum is ruptured so it still doesn't feel great plus I'm still fighting the end of this infection but I feel a zillion times better. I learned my lesson....I will never put anything near my ear.

Oh shit Sad Well, glad you got to the root of the problem and you're on track to recovery. My ear is feeling better, but found out that my eardrum had ruptured as well. Sheesh, what's your chart? Wonder if we share a placement that's being affected by a bad ears transit or something lol

Fingers crossed for you smile I also had a bad habit of qtips...I can't help it, I have Virgo and am a clean freak lol
