Had this discussion with my gf's this weekend. 1 kilo or 1 pound is exactly that, so the theory that muscle is heavier than fat is wrong.
However muscle is more compact in space than fat, (volume) so if you are gaining muscle and losing fat you will appear slimmer or to have lost weight.

Wouldn't that work the other way?
You look like you lost weight because you've lost fat (or became more toned), yet you have gained muscle which would result in a weight gain.
Ahhh I never thought about gaining muscle! that could very much be it, things do appear to be toner in certain areas even though the scale says I gained weight I cant see a huge difference in my clothes, I think because I know ive gained weight I become self conscience and start to see things that arent really there. What are your opinions on weighing? I think I might be slightly obsessed with my scale

Yes I am heavier then I was last year, but my clothes say otherwise. I am very petite, but muscle ways more then fat..I don`t go by the scale, go with how your body feels, and how your clothes fit

Also keep in mind your water intake. You actual weight can vary 3-5 lbs. based on how hydrated you are as well as your clothing.
@VH I do drink a lot of water. I try to drink as much water as possible

I'd hope so. It's the general guideline of the American College of Sports Medicine. :p
