A study in Melbourne, Australia makes the suggestion that a lack of B12 is six times more likely to cause brain shrinkage.
B12, a nutrient found in protein, tends to be lacking in those living a life style without meats, milk, fish and organ meat such as liver.
Vitamin B12, a member of the B family, contains cobalt, and is important for normal function of the brain, nervous system, and blood formation. Involved in the metabolic process of every cell in the human, body, B12 also affects DNA synthesis and regulation, fatty acid synethesis, and energy production.
Fermented soy products and algae such as spirulina are said to be B12 rich. Yeast extract is a valid source of B12, and a good, quality vitamin can ensure that one won't lose one's mind due to a vegetarian life style .
maria, mystic_fish's intention was obviously to provide some earnest advice to help out vegans and vegetarians, not to insult anyone. i personally love soy. rock on.
I'm not mad at ~mystic_fish, I am offended at the article. That is really ignorant. Vegans do not have smaller brains. And yes it is a bad thing to say someone has a small brain. You think its a good thing to have alzheimers? No, its not...
Vegans are healthier than meat eaters, and that's a fact. If you don't believe me, do some research.
PMM, If we did do any research, it sounds like you would ignore it anyway - as the others say, having a smaller brain doesn't actually mean anything. These researchers don't just make up the results. You should know that the human being only uses a tiny portion of the brain anyway.
PS It is ignorant to insult a research finding just because you don't like the sound of the results. It is you who are inferring that the results suggest vegans are less intelligent, and not the researchers, or any of us. Also, some vegans may be healthier than some non vegans, but that doesn't mean that veganism is the healthiest diet.
It's the protein I'm concerned about but fatty acids are very important - I suggest bread with olive oil and especially flax oil - bread and oil especially mixed with organic salt/basil/parsley/white pepper is the best thing.
The truth about soy is, well researched, it's actually proved harmful especially to females as it imbalances the estrogen. Aside from that having soy all the time proves to be an imbalanced diet - one could become allergic!
Those who stick to ORGANIC meats and fish will be perfectly healthy. Even vegetarians/vegans can agree with that. I was born vegetarian by the way.
