There have been zero peer reviewed scientific studies that show gluten is harmful to anyone except those people with Celiacs.

Zero.
Research zonulin and Dr Fasano.

But here's the result of their research:

"In our study, gluten-sensitive individuals who responded to a gluten-free diet had a genetic predisposition to celiac disease. They had no evidence of celiac, but they did have the vulnerable genes that put a person at risk of celiac."

It still doesn't prove gluten is harmful. The study shows its harmful to those with genetic predisposition for Celiacs.

If I'm allergic to peanuts, it doesn't mean peanuts are harmful. Except to me. It's the same with gluten.

I can't eat too many onions and bell peppers because my gut turns into a one way storm drain to the lower levels of hell. But no scientist in their right mind will say onions and peppers are harmful.

This is correct, however the studies are showing that zonulin is produced in everyone as a result of gluten. The only variable is whether you produce a little zonulin (which opens the gate for a short time) or a lot (which can keep the gate open longer, and whether your immune system tags those proteins as similar to other tissues.

I am not Celiac, but tested positive for immune antibodies to gluten proteins other than gliadin. Gluten protein chains are very similar to other organs in the body, and I have genetic predisposition to a certain autoimmune disease (which I do have).

It's very probable that my (at the time) unknown non Celiac gluten sensitivity allowed for the development of my disease. Going gf has reduced my organ specific antibodies by more than 75% in less than 2 years, and symptom resolution.

Now if you don't have the genetic predisposition to autoimmunity, the zonulin your body produces as a result of gluten exposure probably won't cause an issue. The proteins come in, and your immune system carries them out.

You're the ignorant one! I'm sure you're so disconnected from your body you couldn't even put two and two together to figure out why you were sick! I did and I'm symptom free. It's not a joke. You're prb a fat keyboard warrior anyway!
Just keep talking. You keep proving what a total moron you are.

I'm pretty sure I've got more knowledge on the topic than you do. You can't even come up with credible evidence to back your claims.

There are people with Celiac's who are the legit cases of requiring a gluten free diet. There is also a genetic link to basically white, European people who are more prone to a disease like that, which also includes intolerance. It is true that some diets work better some than others. After all, as it's been mentioned, everyone's body is different and will react differently. If someone feels better after creating a stupidly high restrictive diet by not eating half the food available to you (SL, for example), that's fine. Whatever floats your freaking boat. Shit like that works for those individuals and there's nothing wrong with it because it's their thing.

HOWEVER, you morons need to stop going around, touting your own personal experience as the absolute truth and proof that it's "evil" or "bad for you." You two can kindly fuck off with your atrocious ignorance in regard to science and nutrition. People would have been much sicker and dying centuries ago if wheat was that bad for us. The current, trending health issues that we face now are all within the last century, which goes hand in hand with highly processed foods which contain shit tons of sodium and sugar, nevermind the increasing sedentary lifestyle that most people are inclined to have anymore.

To proclaim that things like gluten and dairy are suddenly oh so evil and will make you sooo sick is just fucking ignorant.

The only benefit of the GF craze is it's a great litmus test to spot the morons in society. I feel bad for the true GF individuals who do it out of actual medical necessity because it's turned something they NEED into such a joke.

I wouldn't want to have to eat this way. I grew up on breads and pastries...LOVE them. And I can have it a few times a year. But more than that and eventually I feel like kaka.
Dude, it's rough. My mom's therapist had her try GF for a month to see if it'd help with an issue she was having. This was just before the GF craze and more companies jumping on board for moar monies!

Pain in the freaking ass. You gotta go through ingredient lists on packages, request the info at restaurants, make sure surfaces don't come into contact with any wheat, etc. There are also things that aren't so obvious, like modified cornstarch, which is in a shit ton of things. Cornstarch in itself is fine, but modified uses wheat product as a filler/whatever.

Needless to say, the month fast of GF did nothing and didn't change her condition (what a shocker). Her therapist, while a nice guy, was similar to this cult mentality of the bad things that gluten is. Gluten free is not a cure all, sorry.

I am glad to see more gf awareness/availability for those who legitimately need it though. I can only imagine what a PIA daily eating was prior to this craze. Just from what we had to go through with my mom, gawd damn.

People have been eating bread since the dawn of cooking with heat. It's a necessity for humans, to eat it, a part of our diet, and good for humans.

I swear humans are so lost and stupid. Tomorrow the news or an internet page full of adds is going to tell you eggs, milk, and oranges are unhealthy and scientifically proven to cause cancer. The majority of humans would believe it, and *it* is that much closer to fully controlling humanity because you're all stupid and believe everything you fucking hear.

Yeah, the gf baked goods are rare treats. You eat enough of that and you're fat and diabetic.

Thankfully I don't have to be as anal as a Celiac with cross contamination so I have bread and cereal in my kitchen (for the SO).

Basically meat and vegetables, and I will eat corn/corn chips. And a bit of white rice although I don't like rice too much. I can't have tapioca or avocado either. My body reacts to those just as if I had eaten bread. Not much I eat is processed anymore, and NOTHING out of a box anymore.

I've learned to really like Mexican food. 🙂

Mexican food is the shit. My only gripe is that the diet contains so much fat. Well, original Mexican food- high use of lard in cooking. *gag* But super easy to remedy and cook healthier with. My main thing is just avoiding the refried beans. If they offer straight up pinto/black beans or non refried beans, I'm good.

Guys, dont believe everything you hear!

We've been eating wheat since centuries and now, why will we suddenly have problem with some gluten in it?

In my country, wheat is a staple food.. We take it everyday, now the entire country isn't unhealthy or fat!

You will be ruining your health by avoiding foods... Unless advised to do so by a doctor.

Besides avoiding food because you will get fat never made sense to me. One doesn't become fat by consuming something - he puts on unnecessary weight because of lack of physical activity(unless its again genetic).

One should eat all kinds of foods unless your body itself rejects the food or unless you are medically advised to do so.

Every kind of food has it's own nutritional benefits in ways science doesn't know yet!

Eat well - all in moderation. Stay physically active - find ways to burn extra calories.

Dont ruin your diet. I've seen people play with their diet and they are repenting now.

What you missed out though is that the quality of flour over the years has deteriorated considerably. Flour is refined now and bleached, whereas at one time it was purer.....less processed

Learn to cite better sources, dear. I had to click two links to get to the real information.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24521561?dopt=Citation

This is real information right here. The interesting thing about this study is that it's incredibly small. Only 20 participants. That's not enough to claim it as a strong tie. A larger study needs to be done.

lol@ your link though. They're going on about a cardiologist who wrote a book about nutrition (hence the really weak link to an insignificant study. Fun fact- cardiologists don't know much about nutrition, as most MDs don't. RDs are who you want to pay attention to. Just sayin'.

I've lost 10 pounds in the last month just from getting the fuck off my couch and exercising. I didn't cut anything out of my diet, except maybe the urge to eat fast-food

I mean to diet is great. I'm not saying is ok to sit around and eat bagels smothered in cream cheese all day, or bread with butter. But grain is a part of a humans daily calorie intake, and healthy humans have been eating grain in their diets for hundreds of years. You can't just cut out a part of the food pyramid just because some random tv commercial or internet add said to.

I actually felt the same way...I'm Eastern European for chrissakes. We never didn't have a loaf or two of bread at each meal, and the go to when you had an upset stomach was warm milk and bread. Shoot, table etiquette even had you place your arms on the table assuming one hand held a fork and the other a slice of bread.

That people have been eating grains for thousands of years doesn't preclude people from having digestive problems for the same amount of time. It's a weak argument.

I had no overt signs of gluten sensitivity, if you discount skin problems (eczema), joint pain (sciatica), and autoimmune disease (diagnosed at 43). Tested negative for Celiac (Alpha and Beta gliadin) but positive for gamma gliadin, omega gliadin, and prondymorphin/gluteomorphin antibodies.

So you never know; this could be much more common than previously thought.

But I'm totally fine with people eating however they want to.
