Where has this sudden change stemmed from?

FOUNDATION: My (August) Leo (male) and I (September, Virgo) are 35. We met 15 years ago. We reconnected 3 years ago after loosing contact for some time. We were both elated with the reconnect. Moreover, for the last year & a half we have spent the majority of our time battling and clashing with one another. Then, spending equal time trying to clear things up for one another. However, we never forget one another for various holidays and birthday celebrations. We both send cards to one another.
FAST-FWScared Last Oct (2012) was the last time we spoke. I was in the middle of moving which brought on a lot for me... I sent him my new address along with the move in date. I never heard back from him. I felt slightly alarmed but nothing serious per he & I have fallen off like this in the past & he always returns. No Biggie.
PRESENT DAY: Now we are back in contact... and I have noticed a huge change in him. His words are softer. Although, he has always been supportive, he now seems far more supportive than before. He has taken an approach of not just telling me what to do yet wanting to assist me in my efforts. We are finally experiencing dialog between the two of us vs in the past it was like we at odds or having bitter sweet conversations. It would seem as though he was nit-picking with me, until I would get to point and say enough is enough I don't have to deal with this s*** and move forward. His emails & messages are now very loving.
PLEASE HELP me to understand this change. I have mentioned this to him & he replies It's all love. I don't get help. I guess my blonde roots are showing, scoffs.
Oh BTW. He said he did not communicate with me from Nov through March because it seemed as though I was having some hard times & he was going through some things of which he is still going through. My reply was please don't cut off communication because I look forward to his calls/emails/ & cards. They all bring me joy... Now his words are melting....

August Leo's are difficult. How do I know? My brother is an August Leo and he's beyond unbelievable and what you describe regarding communication is accurate. Maturity? Maybe but I don't think so, could be one of his false faces displaying itself.
If the change is permanent then you shouldn't see the old him display itself at all but if he's faking and August Leo's can be dark and a bit fake then he'll revert back to his old self soon, give it time.

My mother is a July Leo, my brother is an August Leo, my Aunt is a August Leo on the cusp of Virgo and I can say without a doubt there is a distinct difference between the July and August Leo's. Dated a July & August Leo...The August Leo was way darker emotionally & behaviorally than the July Leo.
August Leo's have a false face, yes, I grew up with Leos in my family, dated a few and I've seen it, not that it's horrific but the differences are subtle but distinct in nature. The world gets the sunny side, the people closest will see something different.
