Made me have lower self confidence, poor school performance, and unemployed.

why would someone force you to be right?

old fashioned school or something?

actually in cultures where ur left had is considered unclean, every on is right handed
Born left handed, still left handed.

I do play guitar right handed though.
I'm a righty. I write with my right hand, but I do other things left-handed (like Wii And guitar.) I went to a private school, and students were taught to shake hands with their right and to eat with their right. If we were caught eating with our left, teachers would correct us. If a child wrote/cut paper with their left, the teachers left her alone.

Lefties are cute.

I masturbate with my left hand.

And you're right handed?

Weird my one friend is right handed and says he uses his left for the same thing.

Do you know what cultures believe in this? I'd be curious to know.
Being left hand or right hand dominate means different sides of the brain are being used.

Learning to use your other hand would actually benefit you in the future, reason being, it expands mental capabilities.

I'm sorry to hear that bawlikestogomoo, Do you do anything with your left?
I was forced to be right-handed for a year by one of my teachers, who was also forced to do the same all thru his childhood... I also have a lot of right-handed family members. I do a lot of things with the right, and just some with the left. I still write with my left, tho.

Question: "when you go to the bathroom, which hand do you use to clean yourself? And when you eat, which hand do you use to feed yourself? Those hands should be separate." This is how I was taught.

For me it was my mom, she says that she wanted to make it easier on me since the majority of people are right handed. I think what she meant to say, was it was easier on her.

It may have to do with your brain having to process the motion of your non-dominate hand differently because the mental pathways aren't developed, thus giving the neurological sensation that that hand is not your own but a preferred lover's - like Thor's as a random example.

What culture is this? Or is it specific to your upbringing/parantal preference?

It does make SOME sense but then again, thank God for antimicrobial soap : )

Absolutely. You don't have to say any more smile but thank you for your response.

In this culture, is hygeine stressed or does it lack? What reason were you given on why? (If you don't mind me probbing deeper.)

I see the reasoning but not the scientifically proven evidence if hygeine is adequete.

Hygiene, manners, and social etiquette were heavily stressed, yes. Since it was understood that the left-hand was to be used to personal hygiene purposes, it was logically followed that you would not greet someone in a handshake using that hand or sit at a table and eat/serve with that hand. We also weren't allowed to show people the bottom of our feet or sit with our backs towards someone. That was deemed disrespectful.

But I was also trying to add some humour in there because LeBron is a Capricorn.

Again, I'm not whining. You can't be that simple minded that you can't distinguish a response, and someone whining, can you? You should really go back and read what I said, get your facts straight, and think before you start running your mouth. Don't embarrass yourself, it's not appealing.
Growing up in church, I heard lefties were the devils children.

My mom is left handed- She went to catholic school and they would on occasion smack her hand with a ruler to get her to use her "right" hand - no pun intended :p

How it affected her? Well she is still a leftie, and we were raised in the catholic church and went to catholic school. So /shurg.

I think she viewed it more as an annoyance, to even suggest one hand is "bad" and one is "good" is just retarded. I am assuming that's how she viewed it anyway.

WHAT!!!! how can you play guitar with your right hand if you're left handed?

I honestly don't know. It's really odd because if I try a left handed guitar it feels wrong and weird af. Like I have better control with my left hand is working the frets and my right hand strumming.

It's likely because when my dad first showed me how to hold a guitar he did the same way he plays which is right handed.

Middle Eastern, Indian, some Asian countries.
Why does every thread on these forums turn this way.....

You can still have emotional and mental scaring if someone belittles you over what they view as a physical defect.

Going to an extreme and comparing a lefties problem- with someone with no hands is ridiculous. It's apples and oranges.

That's like telling an anorexic person who was belittled about their body most of their life- to get over themselves as there are actually fat people in this world.

Some people hold on to stuff, no reason cast judgement and be a douche about it.

@lillypetal I understand that. It's crazy interesting to me.

Do you still practice this?

I am American so my ignorance is already through the roof. Others customs and reasons are fascinating to me.

But you were in a place where you had soap and knee to wash hands and all that, correct?

Because there is proven evidence to the benefits of being ambidextrous. If you write, wipe, and all that with your right, then you shake with the left? In my place its proper to shake with the same hand most people wipe with.. Which is worrisome lol. Now you've given me something to ponder haha

I'm American but I'm not Americanized (not fully, anyway, I am slowly but surely being "corrupted"), if that makes sense. I'm a third-culture kid.

Lol, yes, we had soap. Writing may be done with either hand, but personal hygiene was always taken care of with the left hand and eating/handshakes with the right - regardless of which hand is a person's dominant hand.

I hate shaking hands and wish waves were more socially accepted. People who know me a bit better offer me a fist bump when they go around the table but shake everyone else's hand. There is no real polite way to turn down a handshake as its misconstrued as being rude. It's tough being in a place that doesn't follow the social etiquette rules I was raised with because that means that people around me are behaving offensively without even realizing it. I'm adjusting in the sense that I tell myself that they aren breaking social rules because the rules I was raised under aren't their own. But there is a level of accompanying knee-jerk discomfort. For example, I was raised that if you greet one person at a table or in a group, you are to greet everyone whether you know them or not. People here don't do that. I was also taught that you don't stare or comment on people's food, people here do that. We are to compliment someone who has had a positive change, like a new haircut; when I did that, they laughed and said I was weird for mentioning it in that way. So, there is a lot of adjusting to be made by me.

I am NOT sharing my bed. The idea of someone's cold feet touching me...!!!!!!! @.@
The only way I'm sharing is if it's a bunk.
My dad, mother, brother and I are all lefties.
My mother, luckily for her as she was born a little later than my dad and went to a more progressive school did not get a wrap around the knuckles every time she picked a pen up with her left hand, my dad though different story, it was very stressful for him, getting reprimanded for not doing anything wrong other than what somebody thinks because of religious reasons.
I also seem to recall that children at school had their left hand tied down so they could not use it (This is in the UK in the 1940's)
Dad died of heart attack when he was 51, he did smoke quite heavily though.
Mother passed away earlier this year after suffering with Alzheimer's, she was 70.
Lol, no problem, @Imarollin. Nothing beast learning things firsthand. Heh.

Yeah, me. Kept picking up the pencil with left. Parents kept changing it to the right hand. Very frustrating and irritating. I write right handed now.

I also kept picking up my fork with my right hand and knife in left and they kept changing that too. To this day, my brain can't compute if my fork is in my left hand with knife in right.

I do loads of things left handed as it feel natural.

No idea why this was done though.
