I pride myself in at least trying to understand different music styles, but there are some I just don't get. One of those styles is country music. There are two exceptions to this(one of which I'm not 100% sure if you could call it country music, but I thiiink so). The exceptions are as follows(the first one is of poor quality, but it was the best version I could find on youtube):

width="640" height="360" ="http://url.dxpnet.com?f=https% 3A www% 2Eyoutube% 2Ecom embed cf0BGdmmtAI"

width="640" height="360" ="http://url.dxpnet.com?f=https% 3A www% 2Eyoutube% 2Ecom embed ixTXmKauL8A"

I have really tried to find other country tunes to like, but I just can't seem to find any. So far, they feel so surface level or purple/whiny or forced happy and they hurt my teeth. I don't know anyone who likes country music, so I'm asking you if you might. One last try:

Do you have any country music recommendations for a (so far)non-believer?
Posted by Vixen2
I've tried, I just cant. I think Johnny Cash and maybe Chris Stapleton may be as close as it gets for me.

Chris Stapleton I haven't listened to. I'll try it, who knows.

Johnny Cash is to me (except for the above example) pretty whiny. Very talented as an artist, granted, but whiny.

You might want to look into folk music from the 60s and 70s.

Thanks! Do you have any recommendations?

Country music is awesome. I am that rare individual that still likes alot of my hard rock past, loves dance music (club), and also like country, particularly when I'm at the cabin up north. It's all about Cancer's moody, moods.

Ah, is that it? I have one tiiiny asteroid in cancer and an empty(empty even from asteroids) 4th house. Maybe that's why I'm not a huge fan...so far.

I don't get it either, it's too trailer trash for me LOL! I like Dolly Parton though ❤

lol @ trailer trash

I have listened to some Dolly Parton and I didn't die from it. I respect her as an artist, person and as a business woman, but I haven't found any music I have found especially exciting yet from her. Maybe I should try again. Thanks! smile

I wouldn't even know where to begin. I've only been into country since about 1991 or so. I guess for new country listen to Keith Urban - Cop Car is a cool tune. See if you like it. Carrie Underwood - listen to "How Great Thou Art" and tell me this girl isn't a once in 50 year talent. I love Blake Shelton, songs like, "Sure be Cool if you did" - that song is amazing. Watch the video once. Blake is like a hit machine - everything he does is good. Also listen to Luke Bryan - "Crash my Party" or "Roller Coaster". I could go all day. If your younger, listen to Florida Georgia Line, their entire 1st album has about 4-5 great songs on it like, " Get your shine on". Watch the video on that - very cool.

lol. It's 2015 and I'm still not into it, so...

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I will listen to all of it. smile

Oh yes, and in a serene, elegant environment, I love classical music too!

I don't need a serene, elegant environment to listen to classical music. (Not all ofc, but in general) I love classical music! Mostly Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, and I have a soft spot for Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" among others. Dvorak's Humoresque makes me in a good mood. I could go on. smile

I have now listened to the tunes you recommended and I thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to experiance this! I thought most of the artists were very talented - some more memorable than others - but the tunes were...not my cup of tea. But they could all sing very well, imo.
I didn't even bother to read the other posts besides the OP.

I like country music. It's about a lifestyle. If you don't grow up with country living and with the cultural influence of living in a rural area, you're just not going to get it. You don't relate to the lifestyle.

It's okay that you don't get it.

I don't get hip hop, I can't relate to that lifestyle.

So, to each their own.

I can't relate to the hip hop lifestyle, but I still like some of the music. I thought I'd at least give country music a real honest chance - before I do I can't say that I don't like it or that I like it. Maybe I would have discovered something new that I liked. Sometimes you have to really listen to some music style to get it. For instance, I remember an ex of mine liked Nitzer Ebb's Join in the Chants and I made fun of that tune to no end...until it caught me.

What country music do you listen to? Could you recommend something?

I haven't read any of the replies yet, but check out Nickel Creek and Alisin Kraus. Bluegrass, but I love it. It isn't super twangy and the subject matter is usually pretty provocative or thought provoking.

Yup.
Not everyone who lives in the country lives like that video portrays, though. I understand the lifestyle, though.

I really do like his music.

I like the Casey Donahew Band, Colt Ford, the Lacs, Carey Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Hank Williams Jr., Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard and so many more.

Does Jason Isbell's album Southeastern count?

Probably not, because I think this was the best so far. He sounds really genuine.

When I read bluegrass, my heart fell just a little, I have to admit, but Nickel Creek was not bad at all. The tune wasn't bad and I liked his voice - effortless and genuine...which is not something I can say about Alison Krauss'...

Forgot to write about Chris Stapleton. I listened to Tennessee Whiskey and I liked his voice, the tune was good...but if had any preconceived notions about country music lyrics, this would be it. But if the worst thing you can say about a tune is the lyrics, then I guess it's okay. smile

Ofc not. I was just joking.

Casey Donahew Band: No. Just no.
Colt Ford I liked. He really has that special something and the tune wasn't bad at all.
the Lacs: Nah.
Carrie Underwood. Not my cup of tea. It's like she tries to be badass and fails miserably.
Miranda Lambert: A real talent, imo. She can sing and has great presence. I think she deserves better songs.
Hank Williams Jr: There is something about him that I like. Can't put my finger on it.
Charlie Daniels: Really like the guy. A true artist...but the tunes were not my cup of tea whatsoever.
Loretta Lynn: Great singer, but tunes not my cup.
Merle Haggard: Love him. I wish I liked his music. That's an artist!

Just imo.

The thing about country music, lyrically the genre is superior, because what they sing about actually has some depth and meaning.
Rap I just don't get at all - I don't even consider it music - more like white noise to me. The only rap song I ever liked was Usher - Yeah! Reminds me of Panama City on the beach. Rap went totally to hell after that.

"lyrically the genre is superior"
I agree that some country lyrics are great, but some of the worst lyrics I have ever heard have been country lyrics. Purple to the point of ewww.

"Oh no, she left me, so I'm drinking whiskey". "I'm a country boy ridin on my horse and she is so far away. Oh nooo".

Yes, I made that up and overdid it, but some of it really makes me cringe. May I ask, which of the tunes you recommended do you think have superior lyrics, except for the CU tune, ofc?

I think there's some good rap out there. Usher's Yeah, I like, for one. smile

I like more of the "bar music" sound. (I believe they call it Texas country now). It's more traditional to country music roots and has a more energetic feel. Something you can toss a few beers back with.

Today's country, is more pop. Like they're trying too hard to cross over (Luke Bryan, Taylor Swift all fit into that category). Traditional country music fans lose respect for them because they're a sell out. More in it for the money than the music.

I'm weird about country, but I *think* it counts? Dunno, but I love that album. And you're right. He put so much of himself into. Saw him twice during that tour. His wife, Amanda plays violin. They were doing Cover Me Up and he looked over at her and, not gonna lie, I got a lil misty. Remember thinking how it must feel to be looked at like that and how lucky they are. Anyway, him, Will Johnson, Jason Molina and David Bazan are about as country as I get these days.

Awww. That's beautiful. smile

Liked all three, but the first two I would probably not think to sit down and listen to just any day of the week. But I think they're good.

Listened to She's Country and I think he's got a little soft spot for ACDC - Back in Black...which is possibly why I kind of like it. The lyrics is a real slippery people pleaser, though. "I bet all you women who listen to country can really identify with this, huh?" But, not a bad song. Thanks!

Gotta go to bed - will listen to the rest later. Looking forward! smile

Night Train, The Truth, Just Gettin Started, he sings really well, but the tunes feel pretty lame to me. Especially in Just Gettin Started, it feels like the song landed in his lap and now he has to sing it. It's like he's singing about someone else. But I do think he's a good artist.

Thanks again! smile

I like old school country
I love metal and hip hop not what's considered "rap" nowadays. But if you're new to country music, why not just start with some Country Pop? The New country the lyrics have pretty much winded Dow to beers, broken hearts, and Chevy trucks but it's fun to dance etc.

Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, The Band Perry, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan just to name a few

"beers, broken hearts, and Chevy trucks but it's fun to dance"
You forgot the words "whiskey" and "country," but other than that...yup, pretty much, it seems.

Miranda Lambert: I think she's really talented with voice and presence, but the tunes...nah, not for me.

Carrie Underwood: I do not get her. It's like she tries to be another person when she sings - someone she wants to be, rather than who she really is. Creeps me out.

The Band Perry: If I had just heard them on the radio, I honestly wouldn't have guessed at country - more like folk...or something. It's kinda nice and I think they seem skilled and genuine, but it's probably not something I would chose to listen to very often.

Jason Aldean: I have heard a lot of him now and a a couple of tunes I like, while the rest makes me want to fall asleep. But he's got a good voice - he can sing.

Luke Bryan: Great voice, but the tunes have yet to make me excited.

Thank you! smile
@Chance_11

Cash is a tad whiny for my taste(except for in my clip), but there is no denying that he is a huge artist - extreemely talented.

Waylon Jennings: Good artist, but the tunes I've heard did not impress me.

Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson: I don't think it would be impossible for me to listen to them for their own sake, in spite of the fact that the music really isn't my thing...but they almost make up for that with a ridiculous amount of talent. I am hugely impressed.

Marty Robbins: I don't get him. He sings really well, ofc, but it feels more correct than with heart.

That Ghost Riders clip really brought a smile to my face. It's not my kind of music at all, but it reminded me of my uncle and his love for old western movies that we watched together when I was little. Good times. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Band of Joy were really cool - I wouldn't have been uncomfortable at that concert. Lucky you! smile

Thank you so much for all this! smile

Taylor Swift is country? I thought she was pop, plain and simple. Oh dear.

Country pop is what I have probably liked the least, so far(along with a style I don't know the name of). They do feel a tad superficial.

I've got a fiddle - it makes me happy. smile

You're welcome. You should give that Kenny Rogers number another shot...focus on the lyrics and what they're trying to convey...country music is all about telling a story. And yes that was indeed Lionel Ritchie back in his afro puff days smile.
