To navigate the treacherous seas of life? Do you rely on a moral compass or do you listen (or ignore) your conscience... I could be full of shit but hear me out I would like to know your take on the matter....

So to me a moral compass is something you look to that guides you through life like a bible or a discipline or a teaching of principles that you practice.....people who have moral compasses learn with their heads to me it's like the equivelaint of someone who is academicallly smart, someone who follows a recipe perfectly....

Someone who exercises their conscience knows what it feels to have a good conscience and a bad conscience, people will moral compasses have this but I don't think they allow themselves to feel the depth of the good and bad conscience as much.....I have found in my experience is that I learn with my heart, meaning I have to experience things first hand so they happen to me and my conscience let's me know if it's good or bad by the feeling I get...

The reason I ask this is because there's this guy on my Facebook who thinks he is morally sound because he goes to church and reads the bible and has a really good moral compass, but I think if you have a moral compass you don't learn first hand if things are good or bad because you bypass those experiences lol I know at first it sounds bad, we all know we shouldn't take drugs but those who do end up becoming enlightened...

So what's your take? Do you have a solid moral compass or do you have a sound conscience?

I love how you basically said "do you rely on this thing, or do you rely on the same thing?" What exactly the fuck is a Moral Compass or Conscience if they aren't exactly the same thing?

Especially a moral compass. What the fuck is a moral compass exactly? All there is, is your sense of empathy for others. Derp.
Ok let me give you an example....

ATM you have left wing and right wing politics!

In the left corner you have SJW, snowflakes, people who act compassionately, these people listen to the little voice in their hearts, their "conscience" and rely on that to tell them right from wrong....

Then you have the right wing folk who are known as conservatives and bigots, they are usually religious and oppose all things that don't align with the bible, gay marriage, abortion etc....their conscience might tell them that gay people are ok but because they have a moral compass which is their bible they stick to it religiously....

Do you see the difference? A moral compass to me is a set of strictures or principles that were laid down before your time by ancestors and they say if you follow this path your life will be perfect, irregardless of how you feel....

Having a good conscious is obtained by just learning and being aware of your feelings in certain situations and then using that wisdom and applying it to life

Moral compas. A guilty conscience can eat me alive!!! For instance one time I cheated on my ex when I was drunk. I wanted to kill myself, for months I felt suicidal for doing such a terrible thing and would cry a lot and hated myself. Part of me wanted to say it was an accident to make myself feel better but I knew deep inside there was no excuse.

While some people go about life cheating away feeling no guilt or remorse.

So I've learned not to do bad things because I can't handle a guilty conscience and will feel like shit after.

What would you call that?
Maybe that's why people stick to their moral compasses very strongly because they don't know how to process certain feelings, interesting.....

I have a manager who is a Capricorn and I know very many capricorns who see black and white, like many earth signs, a spade is a spade.....my manager instantly dislikes anyone who cheats and labels them as dirty whore sluts lol......I personally think that's very harsh but she sticks to her guns and says "it's my morals and I stick by them" While I admire that she has morals and sticks to them I also know that Bruce lee once said that in life you have to be like water and adapt to situations, if you're rigid like a stick in your morals some situations will snap you

You're asking a few different things here....so as best I can I will respond with:

1) I reply on both to navigate life

2) I don't know if I have a "solid" moral compass because it is always evolving and

3) I'm not sure I would like the idea of replying heavily on my conscience because it can be easily influenced by the ego and can be emotionally selfish (based on your description above). In other words it has the potential to turn one into a selfish assh*le.

I follow a moral compass. My conscience is dark and full of terror. I truly live in a constant state of fear and misery. I was raised by pretty decent influences however, so I consider myself lucky. My grandfather what extremely strict, and would whip me if I lied or did stupid shit. It truly tought me not to lie, or do stupid things. He also would preach to respect the law, respect my family, and not to hang out with idiots or he would teach me a valuable lesson. Which was his scary strict side. As a kid I didn't understand, but as an adult his values stuck with me. I've never been arrested, I respect my family, and I don't hang with idiots. Also my mother is a super nice and caring human in general, and my family sticks together and takes care of each other in sickness and old age. Those values stuck with me also. I personally consider those types of things as a moral compass, because they were taught to me and I use them to do what I feel is right. If I was left with nothing but my conscience my life would drastically fall into a dark void.
