"Much of the neurolinguistic programming (NLP) children and teenagers receive comes through the lyrics they hear in music and its repetition. NLP is one of the easiest and most widespread methods of persuasion, especially for those not conscious to its effect on the mind. Familiar things require less effort to process and that feeling of ease unconsciously signals a truth, also called cognitive fluency. Fluency allows effortless thinking. When thinking about something that is easy to process, we tend to reason quickly and effortlessly. This isn't necessarily a good or a bad thing, but one standard effect of automatic thinking is that we tend to go for the default option. What some of the new generation of lyrics do is hit that part of the brain that operates below the level of conscious awareness which is quick, effortless and automatic. So if we are going to create simple lyrics in music, they must empowering not disempowering, because they have a significant effect on the generations that will inherit the world."

It makes sense. But very few listen to good, positive songs anymore. My friends even laugh at me for listening to Sinatra. They say it's boring. I guess because you cant twerk to such songs lol. I'm a true romantic at heart, though, & when I listen to the golden oldies I feel cleansed.

People like John Legend are still here, but may not appeal to everyone due to the popularity of the more crappy songs.

Btw, earlier this evening, my son was alone watching tv in the lounge area & he had the music channel on. He watched for a while & apparently one song got stuck in his mind because he kept repeating the lyrics over + over. I couldnt make out what he was saying at 1st & was mortified when I did- "What you gonna do with that big fat butt, WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE". The big fat butt part was hilarious to him.

LOL yes. Manipulation by music and media in general is more powerful than we can comprehend. Those who refuse to be manipulated by such idiocity are considered stuck-up or "unable to just have fun/go with the flow" by most. From what I've seen anyway.

But. Truth is, there always was good and bad music. Older music seems so much better to us today because, with time, the good is way more likely to stay remembered and cherished than the bad. And, compare radio pop to radio pop. The year in question is 1975. Bee Gees' Jive Talkin, maybe? Led Zepp to Nicki Minaj is a bit of a ridiculous comparison, imo.

However... bad popular music of 1940s-1990s > bad music of today, still. 😛

I like listening to music with swear words in it at times. Some of it being heavily laced! It isn't necessarily the words, but is the emotion in the music being expressed.

Not all music has to be all "lovey dovey" or "good and positive" to listen to... I think I would be living in a superficial world then for some reason.

Balance. I love filthy music too but I balance it out with the good kind so I dont get stuck in one direction. Rap has a way of making me feel gangsta. LMAO. Dont want to be stuck in the "Yo, yo, yo" mode so I shift my mood by playing something pleasant. Music affects how I feel, personally.

Does it? LOL!

"Yo" is derived from Philadelphia. Sometimes, music can help you purge emotions that you do not want to directly express. But yeah, I am the same way as you.

+1 on purging. Yeah, music has a way of making you feel in character. The singer/rapper's attitude kind of rubs off on you hence the fleeting gangsta moments lol.

What does "Yo" mean anyway?
