Why are professors shocked every time I get a high A on a midterm or am able to help one of my classmates with a concept during a supervised study group?
In addition to the aforementioned experiences I have had with several professors I've also held customer service jobs in which customers have actually said things like " That was smart. Are you smart?"
to me.
It's crazy.
For most of my academic life (3rd grade -present) I've been a straight A student. If I didn't have the highest grade in a particular class I was at least one of the top three students when ranking students by test average.
I feel like part of my success has to do with the fact I didn't have much interaction with racist or sexist authority figures until high school.
I never doubted my abilities and would always work really hard the few times I struggled with concepts because I was encouraged despite my race and gender.
I also come from a very educated family that has members whom are in various stem fields which also helped me believe in the fact I could do this type of work too.
Idk.
