Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, is claiming that his wife, Kathrine Jackson, is responsible for her son's death -- a claim that is being forcefully denied by Mrs. Jackson's attorney and lawyers for Michael Jackson's estate.
The accusations surfaced over the weekend in a UK News of the World report -- less than two weeks before the one-year anniversary of MJ's death.
The Jackson patriarch said he confronted Mrs. Jackson about being responsible for MJ's death while they were viewing their son's body on a mortuary table, according to the news outlet.
The 80-year-old Jackson reportedly said Katherine was weeping uncontrollably and was highly upset at the time. "But I didn't give her a hug because I was mad at her crying," Joe said. According to News of the World, he then told his wife, "If you had listened to me, Michael would be living now!"
Mr. Jackson said he had spent months urging Mrs. Jackson to get their son into rehab for his prescription drug addiction. However, later in the interview, Mr. Jackson said he didn't know that his son was addicted to drugs, but he knew something was wrong.
A lawyer for Mrs. Jackson told TMZ that Kathrine was a loving mother and the public is aware that she and MJ had a very special relationship. "The world also knows who Joe Jackson is and he seems bent on never letting us forget," Mrs. Jackson's attorney said, according to TMZ.
Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for Michael Jackson's estate, also responded, telling TMZ that the inference by Joe Jackson that Mrs. Jackson was in any way responsible for her son's death is preposterous. "Katherine Jackson was a supportive and loving mother throughout Michael's life," Weitzman told TMZ. "His love and respect for her is reflected in his estate plan."
Michael reportedly cut his father totally out of his will. The bulk of the late pop star's estate is expected to go to his mother, his three children and various charitable organizations.
