It's a romance language but it doesn't sound like portuguese, french, spanish, italian. The vocabulary basis is 80% latin but the slavic accent is too damn strong. Only romance language to have kept the latin declension. Romanians will understand portuguese, french, spanish and italian to a high degree...but none of those will understand romanian (in speaking).
Moldavians can speak both, grow up with both.
So as far as how it sounds, I understand why it sounds like Russian. At its core...could not be more different (romance vs slavic).

I do think it sounds a bit softer than Russian(I could be wrong, ofc.) I worked with a Russian and a Romanian(and a Greek) in a school project once and I didn't get the chance to ask these questions, because there was a lot of friction in the group, unfortunately. So now I finally got some answers. Thank you!🙂
