Paying it forward

If someone paid for your drive thru order, do you feel obligated to pay it forward?

Do you feel like when ppl continue to pay it forward that it defeats the purpose of being nice?

Do you think the workers should ask you if you want to pay it forward? Or is that just added guilt?

What if you just came for a $ 3 coffee and the guy behind you has a $ 30 order?
This happens to me all the time when I go to a particular drive through starbucks in the valley. Always packed full of assholes who don't let people merge. Since I'm not a savage I'll allow one person in front of me and like 9xs outta 10 they pay for my order. No joke. Makes you wonder how long they had to sit in line before I came along.

I'll pay it forward but usually just 5-10 $ because thats what my order was.

Totally up to you though. Don't feel shamed into it.
yeah, and I believe as nice as we can be; there are those that will take advantage

therefore I don't trust people until I know them well and even then I keep my secrets

and only @Tiziani has a hint bout them
Nope.
We don’t have drive thrus here, can someone explain what happens? You pay for other people’s meals and drinks?

Nope.

😅

I feel bad about this really
But dude seriously my coffee is $ 4...the person behind me could have a $ 30 order for the whole office...I used to ask their total first but then I felt cheap as hell doing that too so I started pretending like I just don’t understand how it works 🤣 so I honk and wave thanks and keep it moving

I'll make it up by opening the door for someone. It's the most i can do.
Ok this is my last post

But my Libra hub likes to pay for the whole line, makes him feel good - god bless - but one time he asked the cashier how many orders it keeps going and she said usually no more than one...a lot of people don’t pay it forward

(He was so disappointed)

So don’t feel bad 😬

So there is this thing where your in line and the person in front of you pays for whatever you ordered...then you are "suppose" to pay that forward and pay for the person behind you...then that person pays for the next person and it can go on all day... its suppose to be this nice thing someone does for you but my argument is, is it really nice? If you continue the line then you arent really benefiting from someone being nice to you cause your still paying for someone else and the next person probably has a larger order then you originally had. I mean, its nice someone paid for you in that moment but I'd rather pay it forward in my own time and way. Maybe next week or the next day I decide to pay for someone else..the way it is done here they make you feel obligated to pay there and then for the next person.

I agree - this pretty much doesn't make sense - we're all trying to make it so wtf is this all about really - I'll give to my charity of choice when I have the means

just say no or can you go elsewhere ?
I'd probably just say something stupid and dgaf like "I gave at the office" and leave it at that RBF like "what"

Why does it have to be so complicated?

If you can't or don't feel like keeping it going, just accept the nicety and move along. Pay forward another time.

Nobody is judging you but you.

I've initiated a pay it forward and I've also been the recipient and I stopped it by accepting. Both have made me feel good. That is the whole point of the exercise.
Because the cashier usually says "the person ahead of you paid for you... we have been keeping it going all day...do you want to keep it going and pay for the next person?" .... that was the first time it happened to me and Im just like "uhhh...." I didnt continue it and the cashier gave me a look and then I felt like the ass hole who didnt keep it going lol.

Well, I think the cashier is an ass because that is totally unnecessary and defeats the whole purpose.

I've not had a cashier say that to me before. I would find it a bit rude.

Just do like I do when the person at the register asks if I have a rewards card or if I want one.

"No."

Simple.
