Who think they know more about the US than the actual citizens who live here (yes, I know, we DO have a speshul group of individuals here who can't even ID Canada on a map, but setting those embarrassments aside atm).

It is something I have never understood in all my time of viewing opinions/comments/whatever on the interwebs.

I bring this up because a friend of mine who lives in another country is OBSESSED with American culture and politics. Yet... she's not as informed as she thinks she is. Why? Media. Just as ours is pretty bad in reporting specifics due to whoever runs that outlet, theirs is just as bad, as are many countries', tbh.

Most recently, she's all pro Hilary, which is lol because her justifications are based in pure ignorance. ...and she doesn't live here. To each their own and all, but her arguments don't hold water because they're of total ignorance and obliviousness because SHE DOESN'T LIVE HERE. I pointed out a few reasons why both candidates suck and she's got a lot of shady history behind her. "Oh that was disproven because I saw it in an article. Do you have insider info?" ...*eyetwitch*

What kills me is she gets snarky and know it all at times and it just pisses me off because I don't sit here and try to tell her how her country is run or act like a know it all. But because she watches American TV and watches political shit and follows what she reads in biased news, she's THE authority on this, you know..

She's like a US version of a weeabo, which is where my annoyance lies.

Any other US dwellers annoyed/baffled at foreigners who do this? I've gotten to the point where I don't know what to say without ripping into her for being such an arrogant and ignorant individual. It's like who the fuck do you think you are? Oooh, you watch a lot of American TV and watch the DNC/RNC or the State of the Union. *twirls finger* I can't count how many times her fantasy perceptions via the media have been burst by the reality of what really goes on here when she's visited a few times. "Oh, but I thought it was like this?" ...what, because you saw it on TV?? :/

It's good to get objective opinions, but people outside the US can suffer from media manipulation just as US citizens do. The best source of information remains your own eyes and ears, and if you don't experience the US for yourself, you simply don't know shit.

And staying a long weekend in New York or having a 4 hour layover at LAX doesn't count.

Spend a month in St. Louis or Minneapolis or Charlotte then get back to me.

If you're not from the US, the first thing to know is that our media is a machine that's always on the go and doesn't always portray thngs accurately.
If you think people within the US know this to be absolute truth, then idk what to say.

It's not people who are in the US or outside the US.

People everywhere will set their alarm clock by the media..or won't.

I had the opposite experience. Foreigners who don't buy the US media and US citizens who stand behind it 100% .

If she still lives in a bubble after having visited the US...then that's not even media at that point. She's sticking by what she read over what she saw with her eyes and people who do that are easily manipulated. Nothing can be done past that point.

I mean a sound judgment should tell her that no matter what she reads, whom she talks to... unless she lives there, there is a component to life she can't gauge properly. There's only so much debating you can make from the sidelines before being a fraud to yourself. At the core of it, I'll never truly "get" gun control topics. I can make points but I don't live in that realm so there's a limit before I turn pretentious. Seems she doesn't recognize that.

Yep. It seems lots of foreigners are experts on the US. They know everything that's going on and they do lots of reading online and watch 6 hours of CNN.
As opposed to US citizens in the Brexit topic.

No clue what that is.

Nor did they. Didn't stop them from explaining european politics to us.

Anyway, no bone to pick with US peeps. As long as there are people, there will be opinions on both sides. It is what it is.

There's a difference between the Brexit and say...police shootings in the US.

One is a global one is local.

Considering the US is as big as Europe...I'm going to disagree with what local and global mean.

Edit: By "As big" I meant "comparable"

I'm sure it set in motion a chain of events that will cross my path at some point. We're all interconnected.

But if you talk from a personal level alone in this present moment...yeah it's easier to see how Brexit affects me more over the knife wielding crackhead.

We're all hypocrites though. As long as it doesn't affect us..who cares?

I miss the days when US was really patriotic.
I remember the ending of that Charlie Hebdo topic when LIB went all patriotic on me with eagles and god bless America.

I totally play off the stereotype of know it all foreigner. Then I wait for the moment when I see the judgment formed "She's like all the rest of the annoying tourists" to be all like "Just kidding man, I know I don't actually know shit".

But not before I get a rise out of them. It's especially funny in latin countries.

People do the same to Texas.

http://m.chron.com/news/houston-texas/texas/article/The-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-of-Texas-8320723.php

Most of it comes from television. Fake accents, Varsity Blues and Friday Night Lights portrayals, saying everyone rides horses, and more…

Plus they don't know where that cowboy stuff really came from -

We're infused with Spanish Tejano culture.. Not hicks like mostly the rest of the south.

Luckily I know enough to refrain from commenting on Europe's unwashed gypsy problem.
*psst* it's "Romani" now...
Is it?

IDK anymore. Here in Indiana we would just call them "Mexicans" since every immigrant is clearly from Mexico to us.

I'm taking the piss, but yeah, my FIL worked for Inland Revenue and they weren't allowed to say "gypsy" anymore. It was considered derogatory.
