Soooo I'm a broke college dropout and I need to figure out what car I wanna get. 99% sure I'm gonna buy new because I don't trust anyone to sell me a used car and not rip me off/make my life difficult. Send me recommendations please and thank you. ☺️

Is 17 years too old for a car?
Don't mean to be pessimistic but I've grown to hate cars. It's the most annoying tool in society. Especially if you live in a big city.

You cant really win. New car and super expensive and they're made to last 5 years or so

Used car and might rip you off and almost always overpriced

Old car and you won't really know what might break next.

I just learned how to maintain and check/fix my cars. Although I just use trucks nowadays

Idk if Toyota still has the certified pre owned line but those cars/trucks before 2016 are reliable.

Stay away from Dodge, Ford(cars) Fiat Chrysler GMC

Toyota, Honda(mostly) Subaru are reliable brands

My first car was a used Jeep Patriot with like 6k miles on it and it had been involved in a minor rear end accident. My dad got into 2 accidents near each other with it a couple of years later. First one had like $ 4,600+ in repairs, second accident got it totaled out and paid out $ 14k+. All paid by our collision coverage (later reimbursed by other party’s insurance). I think my dad had initially paid less than $ 13k for it. So I think it was pretty good return. I was also against a used car due to safety concerns but just get something reliable and low mileage and you should be fine. I was a pretty risky driver then. New cars are so not worth the financial burden.

Ooh I just checked what the car would be worth had it not been totaled out before the pandemic, literally around $ 20k+

I got a base model Rav4 for $ 27k ish I think, my monthly payments for that alone is $ 410 😬😬 Be careful… broke and new car doesn’t go together, this shit expensive af

Thats not the expensive part...the expensive part is when you take it for maintenance and repair. You'd be lucky if it only costs a few hundred dollars.

Each time I'd take the civic in for service, honda always seems to find new problems they say needs fixing.😑

😂😂 Broke + new car = 💩 I know. How long are you financing your Rav4 for? I'm trying to do three years since that way I won't have to pay interest.

See that's exactly how I think too, so then I get stressed out and annoyed and give up on car shopping lol
Toyotas and Hondas are good bets. It mostly comes down to how well the vehicle was treated. Couple rules to buying a car:

-If they "did you a favor and warmed it up for you" walk away. Just turn around and walk away.

-Have a pre-purchase inspection done. If the seller won't let you, walk away, yes, this includes dealers.

-For the pre-purchase inspection, request the mechanic perform a compression test and that he test your coolant for hydrocarbons. This will cost more, but it will ensure you aren't buying a vehicle with an engine failing or already failed. If the vehicle has bad compression or fails the coolant test, run away from that car.

- dont buy the warranties. Tell the dealer you're paying the agreed-upon price or no deal.

-About prices, know the local going rate for what you're wanting and that is how you open negotiations. Open up with a healthy 3-4k lower than what they're asking and do not be afraid to walk away. For this to work, you must be prepared to walk away from the car. Remember, this is a business transaction and that smiling face across from you is hoping to reach as deep as they can into your pocket. They are not your friend.

It all depends on how much youre willing to pay. I wouldnt get into huge monthly payments cause then your car becomes your life. Dealers are also sketchy. I guess used isn't so bad if you stick to Toyota. Cause Hondas get abused by "Racers"

Just check a dealers feedback on legit websites(usually google is ok) You can usually spot when a dealer does bad stuff from even 1 or 2 negative feedbacks. Maybe go with a guy who knows basics of cars cause they love to take advantage of women

I have friends who are friends with car dealers so that honestly makes me feel a little better... I'll still do my research though.

No problem, and I thought of a few things to elaborate on and add:

-About the warranties, they seem like a good idea. But they aren't, because of their added costs and the interest, you'll pay for the car 2-3 times over and you likely won't ever use the warranty. And if you do, you're going to find that quite a few shops will flat out reject working on your vehicle because of how the warranty companies operate. Don't get the warranty. Just make sure the pre-purchase inspection is done and get triple A.

-About dealerships, when dealing with a salesperson they are gonna chat you up. They are doing this for two reasons: they want to establish rapport, which builds trust, and then they want information on your finances: "How much are we looking to spend today, maybe I can help you find the right vehicle." What this really means: "I don't give a fuck about what you can afford and you getting good value, I want to sell you the most expensive vehicle I can so I get a larger percentage. So tell me how much money you have so I can try to take all of it and more if able." They aren't your friend, don't make small talk, don't trust them, just be an asshole.

-Financing, most people can't afford to buy a car outright. It means you'll need financing, but for god's sake DO NOT USE THE DEALERSHIPS FINANCIERS. Hit up your local credit union and get pre-financed there, and you should see a much more favorable APR. If you do, keep whatever you get approved for close to the vest, the dealership doesn't need to know this information until you're sealing the deal.

Then definatly consider that because cars get rust underneath so, you'd have to get under and have a good look.

Hmm I can’t remember, I think it was just the standard one, maybe 72 months? I’m planning to pay it off sooner, but needed to see what a mortgage is looking like, since I’m looking to also buy a house in May 😬😬

Used cars literally cost as much as new cars right now too. I did a lot of research before buying new, and they had 2017-2018 Rav4s selling everywhere for $ 24k+…. Like duh I’m going to get the new one? Meanwhile, dealerships are contacting people who have bought a new car the last 1-2 years asking to buy them back at the same cost they originally bought. Soooo 🤷🏼‍♀️ Seems like there’s a lot of pre-pandemic information swirling about this thread and from people who haven’t bought cars recently.

Also, they expect chip shortages to go well into 2023, maybe longer, and things won’t start to recover until then. I guess it depends on how bad you need/want a new car. Yes, it’s a bad time to buy a car, but it’s not supposed to get better for awhile

I've been doing okay without a car but it's made my job more difficult that it would be if I had my own car, and my Gem won't let me drive his car lol. Having a car would make things so much easier for me; then I can just grab whatever I need whenever I need to and have an easier time meeting clients at different locations... And yeah I 100% agree on your comment on how used cars sell for as much as new cars so I literally don't see any point in buying used lol

Are you buying a house for your birthday?!

Just be careful of the brands that are selling way above msrp… shady business practices. I can say in my experience that Toyota is not doing that. $ 27k for a brand new rav4 I think is pretty standard, even from before the pandemic. I can tell you that Ford Bronco msrp is around $ 30k and they are being sold right now for $ 50k. This is happening a lot…. Total fucking scam! You’re a smart cookie, I’m sure you’ll do your research. And not so much buying a house for my birthday but it’s just time lol. Housing costs have skyrocketed everywhere, but interest rates are still low. When I moved to Ohio, I rented a tiny house here $ 1300/month.. it’s a $ 100k 1k sqft house…. I am literally paying 2 months of their mortgage every month. It’s insane. I plan to buy a house at around the same monthly payment (maybe a bit more), and will get twice the house and it will be mine. It’s way cheaper to invest. I can’t believe I’m spending that to live in my current house. But it’s just for a year when I first moved here - a safe place and I have 2 big dogs, so it worked short term. Cost of housing is still incredibly cheap here, so I am trying to make a move quickly.

I have no idea about the housing market in Ohio but my sister and her husband just moved out of Boston to sign a lease for a townhouse in WV, which I thought was weird since they will only live there for a year while trying to find a house to buy in NC... I think the housing market prices in NC are supposedly high now but I thought they would've just found a place in NC to rent temporarily while looking around for houses. Idk. But yay for a new house!

As for the car, I have friends who are friends with car dealers so I have an appointment to see on of those people anyways so that I don't feel as scammed lol
