Can you solve this riddle??
A rich and handsome man named James Leonard was murdered on a Sunday afternoon. At the time of the murder there was: the maid, the cook, the butler, the gardener and the wife.
Maid: I was fixing the table.
Cook: I was cooking breakfast.
Butler: I was sharpening knives in the kitchen.
Gardener: I was planting tomato seeds.
Wife: I was reading a book.
WHO DID IT?
If you don't guess this, you're an idiot lol
It's the cook, I think. S/he was cooking BREAKFAST, he died in the AFTERNOON, so the question is, what was s/he doing that afternoon?

It was the Wife... because she was reading a book and new where all the others where at... as she had the power and position to also be the only one not seen by the others... and she did not really have to be anywhere...
The cook on the other hand with the knifes is directed at the people and their natural fears when they hear knife... read it or what ever lets their mind run wild...
PM
It also is the person telling the story so it is from their perspective... it is people natural reasoning you are telling the truth because of the way it was worded... but there is an element that this is not true and hypothetical... That is the only hole... as if it was a true... a police officer that was hopefully the right for the job as everyone has a reason for being Winking is on the case and realize this is a perspective...
PM
The wife.

Mean butler with the knifes... and the Cook was making breakfast because he was told to... The wife is the only one that could or was in the prime position to tell the others what to do other then maybe the butler and he would know where she was at... The wife would also normally have the most to gain... As it would do no real good to kill him... as they are not family really... as unless he wrote it even before them his money would go to next of kin...
PM
Or maybe they all took part in covering up the murder, since it says 'at the time of the murder there was..' Or it could mean that the murdered guy is a fictious character from the book the wife is reading. IDK. Oi, I'm getting a headache.
The wife killed him! She ordered everyone to do something! While she was reading the book, she secretly took a gun tucked within her bra and pulled the trigger! The perfect recipe was that she told the cook to cook breakfast for TOMORROW. Easy. Slick wife. Tongue

Are you reading "Murder on the Orient Express", watercup? smile

LOL, No. Why?
I think the wife had the most motive... Does not mean that there is an out of the box person... she had the easiest ability to do it...
Who knows maybe some nut got to him and no one saw... But if it had to be one of these I would start with her...
I would like to say... it was Sunday... and maybe they all had the day off... maybe they all live with him maybe they are all at home and she was the only one...

Oh FFS, it was the cook!
http://www.trickyriddles.com/riddle/5073-The-Murder-Mystery

If only if life things are that simple... after the wife I could see... him being next... then the butler... Who ever had the fishiest and most to gain... Normally most to gain because that is motive... That is why you have to find if anyone one of these people have motive first... If the cook just got fired then their you go... but why would wife not know that...

lol I love seeing how people really get deep into this & use all of their over-analyzing skills! And yes it was the COOK. The keyword was "Afternoon." The cook wouldn't have been making breakfast in the afternoon =)
At least now we know who the idiots are! LOL oh hush I was kidding =P

People sleep in... on Sunday... I don't by it... as it is Sunday and I have not eaten breakfast yet... and it is getting close to the afternoon... As I had a big dinner the other night... I had food coma... and went to bed at 9:30... I know crazy right...
It is ok... This is why text book answers are not always correct...

Omg you're being too technical. Riddles are meant for the imagination!
Had the riddle said, "He was enjoying a beautiful Sunday EVENING" & yet the cook said he'd been cooking BREAKFAST would you have still said, "Well technically I eat breakfast at night too?" I mean come on!
Yes, I get it. Some people eat breakfast in the afternoon or the evening, BUT generally breakfast is related to the MORNING. Always has been

No you are being to technical because you are defending the technical answers... as for me I am thinking as to motive first then as to what they said...
What does the cook have to gain... he is just a cook and now he maybe out of a job...
Life is never that simple... people who commit murder normally do it as a crime of passion or some type of motive... The person with the best motive is the wife... as you stated that he was rich... Just be he was good looking does not mean she was in love... she could have been a lesbian for all we know... We just now know that she is rich... so she has the most to gain...
