Syrian Civil War

Why isn't this controversial, much discussed, well publicized topic not being discussed on here? oh ya everyone is too busy talking about sex, rachelsnow12's personal life, and looking at stupid cat pictures.
I'll start
Who's to blame for the civil war?
Russian government
Why Russia?
Russian government is keeping Bashar al-Assad in power
Russia's motivation to keep Bashar al-Assad in power?
It is known Russia has an active naval facility in Tartus, Syria. It gives the Russian navy a place to dock some of their ships in the mediterranean sea. Is that a good enough answer? No, so there is more to russia's motivations and interest. Maybe the russians are interested in preserving syria's ancient ruins. It is suspected this is russia's hypocritical statement to the world on sovereignty. The world cannot simple determine based upon their own interest on who can run a nation even if its a dictatorship. of course russia had its fair share of dictatorships and did nothing for muammar gaddafi.
What can NATO or the UN do?
Say a bunch of damning words condemning Bashar al-Assad's reign of terror over his own people. Support the rebels in ways without upsetting the Russians (Something the russians could of thought of in the first place). So pretty much nothing
Why can't NATO or UN intervene in the same way during Libya's conflict in 2011?
Russia, mad.
Israel, crazy mad.
Rough nuclear weapons estimates based upon the amount of uranium estimated in the crust of the earth:
Russia ~12000 nuclear weapons
United States ~9000 nuclear weapons
China ~200
Etc.
Just to make the Russian's happy, President Obama retired 2 B53 9.3 megaton nuclear weapons in 2010-2011
I applaud the info you got together here, I've been wondering the same thing myself....
Other sites however, are discussing this though. ATS, Icke a whole heap. You should head there!
Assad is using helicopters, jet aircraft, jeeps, tanks, artillery and infantry forces to fight back the civilian population. There is an enormous body count, with untold numbers of women being raped and/or sexually attacked by Assad's troops. He is even rumored to have used poison gas on the people. He is a modern version of Saddam Hussein.
The guy is waaaaaaaaaaaay overdue for his dirtnap, but the question is what will America do about him and his systematic genocide of the Syrian people?
The democrats are too pussy to do anything militarily, so Assad will most likely continue the bloodshed.
I made a err. The russians aren't keeping Assad in power, the russians are protecting him. they both sound the same but not exactly. russia and china will veto any UN security council resolution to have a no-fly zone over syria
The russian government is currently "honoring" a few weapons contracts made a few years before the uprising to supply the syrian government with weapons
There is worry from russia about who would take over if the syrian opposition coalition took control of syria. there are terrorist groups who are among the syrian opposition, one of them being al-Nusra Front which is affiliated with al Qaeda. The russians probably figure they want to deal with assad who is someone they're familiar with
The philosophy I try to live by is, "You are either part of the problem or part of the solution." With that being said, I am most concerned about the innocents being slain and what actions I can take to help them. So far, that has been to donate to the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs- Syrian Emergency response fund. Any other suggestions are welcomed.
the next best thing is to head over there and take up arms. i wouldn't mind shooting an rpd
Hey Scorp Superior, you should have put the money you gave to the UN directly into the incinerator. At least you could have kept warm by the flame for a minute or two, thereby getting something more worthwhile out of it. The UN is one of the most corrupt and worthless organizations on the planet. From their prostitution rings in Africa, to their ineptitude against criminal scum in Haiti and Kosovo.... They are as useless as they are dangerous in terms of their operations as a whole.
my knowledge of the UN is lacking

Christian and Jewish Relief groups are basically illegal in a place like Syria. Groups especially like the Salvation Army immediately spring to mind. Otherwise, I would suggest donating to them since they have a record of spending money more efficiently on those who need help. Why not donate your money to the tornado victims in Oklahoma who are being helped by the Salvation Army now?
The Red Cross is almost as corrupt as the United Nations, so I wouldn't bother with them.
Honestly, I don't think there is much you can do at all unless you go over there yourself and pick up an RPG.
i was thinking differently with libya because of the natural resources libya has. do i know how much natural resources libya has? no, but does libya have the natural resources the world wants? yes. i like to think gaddafi pissed off the world enough to have no one to save him. i like how he tore the UN charter in front of the UN general assembly on his last trip to the US
i don't think assad would step down, they did offer him immunity before but he vowed to stay there until his death and the opposition wanted him dead, but i remember the opposition changed their stance on it recently.
if they do impose the no fly zone, the US will probably send whatever aircraft carrier they have in the mediterranean and other european nations will probably send aircraft from bases. the hellenic air force isn't too far off. israel wanted to rip assad to shreds for trying to bring in those s-300 missiles. I guess the verdict from russia is no for the anti air missiles for now
The syrian government struck back and pushed the opposition out of Qusair. The return of the opposition is next
