HAHA wow i've experienced worse when i was 8 and younger. thats real punishment right there. i guarantee there will be people who will demonize the parents for doing their job too. but i will say, that the dad sounds like some fucking pig on a power trip. doesn't even sound like hes doing it because of what she did, but because he enjoys it.

I try not to judge how people choose to discipline their children since I don't have children of my own...
also, every child is different...so different discipline applies.
I know as a child I was extremely hard headed and strong-willed...spanking me hardly even worked...I'd tell them it didn't hurt and shit and keep on doing what I was doing...while my sister was so sensitive all you had to do was give her a look and she'd start crying...it would be just plain wrong to have hit her.

Again, I don't have children, I'm trying really hard not to be judgmental...but imo a more appropriate punishment would be to take her computer away, make her do extra chores/shit she hates doing, ground her, etc.

I was spanked with a belt myself when I was younger. It's also really hard to be judgmental about this; I don't have children of my own and I experienced the same kind of punishment when I was a child. However, two things are obviously different.
The punishment wasn't excessive: My mother was the one punishing me, and I was probably only hit with the belt like once or twice. Most of the time, it was just her hand, or her threatening to get it. To be honest, I was more fearful of the threats than the actual belt itself.
Also, I was like seven or eight. This girl is sixteen. Maybe it's just me, but no teenager should be beaten like that. They're at an age where there are different forms of reinforcement or punishment that can change behavior.
The judge was doing it out of anger, embarrassment, power, ect. That's the point where wanting to actually change behavior becomes abuse because it was done without the intent of bettering the child.

Yes and no. It wasn't a usual practise at our home, but I did get slapped two or three times. Also I've grown up in a culture where physical punishment is common, meaning occasional slam on the butt or in worst case a slap across the face. I can't say I have seen any emotional scars from this upbringing when compared to how children are brought up in cultures that don't believe in physical punishment. No difference at all. If it's done right (and in this case it wasn't) I don't see the harm.

Some kids are problematic and some kids are angels and some kids need light discipline and some kids are extreme and act like seeds of the devil and some kids are obstinate and beyond hard headed and just can't be reasoned with no matter how many times the child is warned, every child needs specific discipline in different ways, there are kids that respond to sitting in the corner or home bound punishment for a few days or weeks positively and not much else discipline is required but then there are children that are beyond out of control and need harsher types of punishment.
IMO had she did what he told her to do "get on the bed and turn over" the spanking probably wouldn't have escalated like that, she sort of brought it on herself just like he said. I won't get into parenting and how parents should rear his/her own child but what I will say is that too many kids are in the penal system because there was no discipline in the home, some homes expect the schools and everyone else to raise their own child and if not the parent falls short of doing the parenting themselves and a lot of those kids (not all of course) end up in the system.
I don't think he should be reprimanded for what he did, spare the rod spoil the child.
