A federal judge ruled Friday that the morning-after pill, known by its brand name of Plan B, should be available without a prescription or any age or point-of-sale restrictions within 30 days. The ruling is in opposition to a previous decision by the Obama administration.

Judge Edward R. Korman of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York ruled in Tummino v. Hamburg, reversing a prior decision by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS).

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) is an emergency contraception to be taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. In 1999, it became the first emergency contraceptive approved for use by prescription. In 2006, the FDA approved it as an over-the-counter drug for women over the age of 18, while requiring a prescription for minors. The FDA subsequently allowed 17-year-olds to obtain the drug without a prescription.

In 2011, the administration backed an HHS decision, overruling the FDA, to not allow women under the age of 17 to obtain emergency contraceptives without a prescription

In my opinion..it doesn't have to be solely for rape. It's the woman's body/future and her choice to do what she wishes. For the parents who are kicking and screaming that feel they can suddenly step in and say the government has no right to have this available to their underage daughters...

If you were a hands on parent to begin with, it wouldn't be an issue. Don't have kids if you can't be in the home to raise them.

If the parent was tuned into their daughters, and paid attention to what's going on out there, they'd have half a brain to put their daughters on birth control. Unfortunately kids today are treated like pets with the added benefit of being raised & trained by television and society. If they have food and water, they are fine on their own. 😢

one advantage would be that, at least the people who seek it are doing something about unprotected sex, and not having it lead to unwanted pregnancies that can open up a can of worms [i.e young parents, neglect, possible abuse, psychological issues] BUT i still think it should require at least a doctors visit to get a prescription for it

^^Who knows, maybe this was a wake up call for the parents who are too busy to be parents to step up to the plate and get involved with their kids and be a part of decisions that are life altering. For a parent to think their daughter isn't sexually active by 13/14 years old is quite neglectful and naive. Like you said, sex education in schools (if they have a program) isn't a deterrent because the kids are going to do what they want anyway. Hell, I had to sign a permission slip for my son to have sex education. This whole scenario with this pill is a result of a severe lack of parenting. Not ALL parents are like this, but we can all agree, you can look around and you KNOW what parents are missing from the kids life.
