Lol so I had got a speeding ticket over a year ago and hired an attorney cause I want to take it to trial (majority of the time they just get dismissed if the cop doesn’t show up). My 2nd court date for it was supposed to be back in August which is postponed indefinitely cause of covid. I’ve gotten a handful of speeding/traffic tickets over the years, a few of them on speed trap zones (still active to date). Can someone explain to me why the city loves cops handing out traffic tickets like candy to make money but REFUSES to make money off of mandating masks to save hundreds of thousands of lives?! This is very infuriating. It makes no sense.

Count your blessings. You got a ticket. Plenty of fellow americans don't walk away with their lives from these 'traffic stops'

I got two minutes from my home, just cause it’s near residential areas with speed traps. One for parking wrong in downtown, another in my college campus cause I didn’t do a complete stop before turning into the parking garage I was paying for... just unlucky

I’d rather pay attorneys than the city. But that is also why I want masks mandated and implemented.

You want to pay an attorney to get you off for something you did? And what does that have to do with masks?

Most costly ticket I've got was $ 180.00 on a highway, my fault though. 😅

I drive like a grandma now... there’s so many actual reckless drivers out on the road, especially with those shady paper license plates that cops do NOTHING about. Lord forbid someone gets in an accident due to them, most of the time they don’t carry any coverage

I think if it were really enforceable they would have already done it

Plus cops aren’t very popular right now...like anyone wants them harassing you about something else

That’s a good point but it hasn’t stopped them from having tons of speed traps during covid! Freeways/highways I get. But hiding in residential areas and fining for going over 5 mph is ridiculous

It's more dangerous to speed in residential areas. Think of the children.

One of the residential areas was literally in the middle of nowhere with cows not too far in the distance and the other was during noon on a weekday when no kids should be out on the streets

Was it towards the end of the month?

Many police departments have mandatory minimums on their officers giving out tickets. Some even make it a benchmark for officers to be eligible for a raise. Why? Because they are struggling to balance the yearly budget and need the money.

Why’s that, you ask? After all police are the most funded, by far, public office in majority of America as a whole. Oh it’s just cause they end up spending way too much of their yearly budget on excessive force and wrongful death lawsuits.

What we should be talking about is ending qualified immunity to get these killers in blue off the force. Even if you don’t gaf about the civilians they’ve murdered you gotta start caring about the millions of taxpayers dollars spent on paying off victims families while they are right back on the street without consequence.

You're using masks as an argument but you want to risk other peoples health so you can go to court to not pay your stupid ticket?

My situations were far from a threat to any living creature

That's putting other drivers at risk.

Why do you have an excuse for every case of reckless driving you commit?

You're not the only one that drives like this.. hence why more than 4 million people were killed or injured in vehicle related accidents last year. Drivers are far more dangerous than COVID at this point.

In my younger years I got a lot of speeding tickets. Usually get a lawyer to take care of it but sometimes there are still fines. Last time I got pulled over tho was about 4 years ago while leaving the Virgos house at like 2am...a cop ran my plates and apparently I had a suspended license that I had no idea was suspended....due to a ticket I got a year b4 that a lawyer was taking care of and they failed to tell me that I still had a fine to pay so it never got paid....luckily the cop was super nice....he still gave me a ticket but let me drive home (about a 45 min drive at the time) and told me to be careful cause another cop could pull me over and might not be as nice as him lol. That was my last ticket.

Yeah I remember my dad warning me about this. They have quotas they need to fill by the end of the month or something. Some of them were given to me near the end of the month. I drive the most careful during those times.

The reason they can write you tickets for traffic violations but not require masks is because there are clear traffic laws on the books as well as driving being a privilege rather than a right.

Mask mandates are emergency/executive orders with little legal precedent behind them that also could possibly run afoul of individual rights.

Ughhhhh we're hopeless

I work in a law firm and it amazes me how people forget they have a case with us and literally will call us yeaaars later for an update. I don't entirely trust law firms that have high volume clients in small stuff like traffic tickets so I like bugging them for updates periodically

Police have never been about saving lives. They were created to protect property. Property which at the time of police inception was owned by wealthy white men.

In the south that meant preservation of the slaving system. Functioning as slaves patrols and during reconstruction period enforcing segregation and committing acts of terror on free folk.

Not much has changed really.

President Hoover did a commission to look into police interference and collusion with party leaders. Police being in bed with corrupt politicians is also nothing new.

Count your blessings. You got a ticket. Plenty of fellow americans don't walk away with their lives from these 'traffic stops'

I used to drive a Saturn L200 and I would get stopped by police once a month for a chat in my own neighborhood.

I switched to a Jeep Cherokee and cops never stop me unless I do something wrong.

It was the oddest epiphany that Saturns are seen as drug deals more often than Jeeps in black neighborhoods.

I used to think, why do I keep getting pulled over—

One night, I was driving the Saturn and I got pulled over, I decided to eat a sandwich as the cops pulls up because it’s the same story every time.
