I've been generally all over the US and VA is the cleanest state by far. We have higher taxes which is a killer for some, but it keeps our state maintenance and government at top notch. It's really breathtaking to see rivers and mountains and beaches here. The air is much different and I can feel it. I can't stand being in big cities for too long because I can feel this difference. Granted you do have to drive if you live in the suburbs, which is basically everywhere in Virginia besides the major cities and historical areas, but I don't mind because our gas prices aren't as high like up north. Come visit (:

What state are you from and what is it like living in your state?
Louisiana
Does your state have unique cultures?
New Orleans and the Cajun bayous are a culture all of there own. People living on the river in cabins and the like.
What foods are popular?
Seafood, especially crawfish, Crab, & Oysters.
What are the people like?
People down here are usually pretty friendly.
The landscape?
Mossy woods with rich wetlands and bayous. Very VERY muggy.
What customs make your state stand out?
Mardi Gras, alcohol sold 24/7 anywhere in New Orleans, the food is some of the best you'll find anywhere in the country, and people sue people for anything.
Any festivals/attractions/historical monuments/tourist attractions?
Did I say Mardi Gras ^.^? Essence festival, jazzfest, Voodoo festival, French Quarter festival, strawberry festival, po-boy festival, etc. If you can think of it we probably have a festival for it. In Natchitoches they even have a Christmas festival...
Dialect differences?
I'm pretty sure you've heard a Cajun accent on the waterboy as opposed to a southern accent for the city folk.
Fascinating state laws, etc?
Etc, Etc.
We are the only state that does not practice common law. We use the Napoleonic law system. It is really difficult to get a public intoxication charge down here I would imagine ^.^

Pennsylvania! I live in philly, and if you want to know anything about it, just watch Its ALwyas Sunny in Philadelphia. Seriously, all that shit is TRUE and ON POINT.
Does your state have unique cultures?
-- lol, half irish/half italian people. and the amish + mennonites are in Lancaster and further. There are Quakers, too, like people that go to the Quaker churches.
What foods are popular?
-- the CHEESE STEAK, and other renditions of it like chicken cheesesteak or pizza steak. Hoagies. Hot cheetos. Mistic juice. Beef pepperoni. soft pretzels. Pizza with RANCH DRESSING on it. (gross)
What are the people like?
--It depends where you're at.
The landscape?
-- eehhhh, it's okay. It's pretty in the Poconos or anywhere besides where i am lol. It's really hilly here too.
What customs make your state stand out?
--Going to the jersey shore? lol idk.
Any festivals/attractions/historical monuments/tourist attractions?
-- The farm show in Allantown is funny to go to. And obviously the liberty bell, constitution center, our city hall, betsy ross house, something about william penn, m?_tter museum, PAFA, the regular art museum, the sports complex, something in pittsburgh. A lot of tourists go on SOUTH STREET, or to pat's or geno's places for cheese steaks (idiots.) there are a LOT of food places and other attractions, too, like the flower show and stuff. and Chinatown.
Dialect differences?
-- its a hoagie, not a sub. And there's a typical philly accent.
Fascinating state laws?
-- it's not exactly fascinating, but PA is one of the only states that hasn't adopted modern liquor laws. You can only buy liquor in a wine and spirits store, and beer (ONLY by the case) in beer distributor stores. and they're both closed on sundays. The only way to get a 6-pack is at a restaurant.

North Carolina, it's alright during the summer for the low level humidity but then the rain comes along and fucks it up.
Does your state have unique cultures?: Mainly in the Piedmont region here. We have a lof of Cherokees here though.
What foods are popular? Chicken and pork. Beef's pretty popular too but not to the level of other states.
What are the people like?: Terrible, avoid closed off communities like Asheboro NC. Everywhere else is nice except this one city in the state
The landscape? A lot of Forests. Everywhere between the mountains and piedmont. Mostly Deciduous environments.
What customs make your state stand out?: Our customs include having stupid governors and a lot of zealots and rednecks.
Any festivals/attractions/historical monuments/tourist attractions?: We have a lot of Autumn festivals in most of the state during the Fall.
Dialect differences?: No different from any other Southern states.
Fascinating state laws, etc?: Fucking voter Id law. State's republican dominated and was put there to fight Democrats, but idgaf.
Etc, Etc.: Be sure to check out the Asheboro zoo. You'll fucking love it, probably the biggest zoo I've ever seen. I once thought about working there. Oh yeah and check out Autumn festivities for sure.

Etc, Etc.
I'm from El Paso, Texas. It's right on the border of the U.S and Mexico. I like that people tend to be grounded here, but still fun. We have a melting pot of culture.
Does your state have unique cultures? We have a lot of Mexican culture here. Everything from huge Cinco de Mayo parties to quinces. Authentic food. It's pretty cool.
What foods are popular? Chile!!! I love hot and spicy food!!
What are the people like? People here are pretty laid back. Very Christian.
The landscape? Desert... boo... to hot.
What customs make your state stand out? We have chile festivals that are pretty cool. Lot's of Mexican traditions and celebrations.
Any festivals/attractions/historical monuments/tourist attractions? In El Paso... not so much, but throughout Texas there's to many historical monuments and things to list.
Dialect differences? Heavy Spanish accent. Everyone here speaks Spanish to some degree.
Fascinating state laws, etc? Um.... can't think of anything strange.Signed Up:

East Texas
Does your state have unique cultures? Texas has redneck culture, cowboy culture, oil culture, there are a lot of Mexican influences, probably more noticeable in El Paso
What foods are popular? Barbecue (beef, bay-bee!), Tex-Mex (Mexican food with spicy Texas influences), home cooking (dumplings, fried chicken), anything fried or with a lot of butter.
What are the people like? Vast variety. Mostly friendly and hospitable. You have your old money (oil), new money (business), rednecks, cowboys, normal folks, etc. Football is big here.
The landscape? Texas has it all - plains in the Panhandle, desert in West Texas, piney forests in East Texas, hills in the Hill Country (central Texas), then there's the coast line.
What customs make your state stand out? Rodeos, BBQ cookouts, oil fields, ranches, farms and cities.
Any festivals/attractions/historical monuments/tourist attractions? Texas has the Alamo!! Most every little town has some festival it's known for (tomato, oil, blue birds, salt, heritage, etc)
Dialect differences? Most people here talk with a Texas twang. Southern dialect but more drawn out
Fascinating state laws, etc? Can't carry wire cutters in your back pocket.
Etc, Etc.
I was talking about BROOKLYN New York obviously. The rest is a different state.. lol
I'm a Leo/Virgo and Brooklynite. I may be the cockiest man alive!

Does your state have unique cultures?
Lots of cowboys, gyp rats, & roughnecks. Don't confuse the ranchers for the farmers because they'll cut a cookiemonster. You sure as hell don't call a working man "Sir" unless you want a FU.
Posted by truecap
What foods are popular?
"Like Grandma makes" style . Pretty much all down home goodies outside of the typical Americana fast food and Wal-Mart freezer section. Gratuitous quantities of meat and potatoes, and everything comes with some form of bread and butter.
Posted by truecap
What are the people like?
Very, very white lol. The greater majority are proud Conservative hard working blue collar Christian types with a fondness for steak and beer, and a surprising amount of marijuana on the DL. It doesn't matter what your education level, profession or station in life is, everyone knows the wheat cycle, where to buy/butcher a cow, and all the words to "Redneck Woman" and "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy".
Everything is over by so-and-so's place. Driving a hundred miles one way doesn't even get a blink. It's normal to see farm equipment, people on horseback and tumbleweeds roll down Main Street. We all know at least one Native American. There's really only three or four cities in the whole state (none of which have a population of 1 million), the rest is a scattering of small towns with a few hundred or a couple thousand.
Desk jobs are for women and masculinity is measured by the number of hours of manual labor worked a week and how many callouses are on a guy's hands. You're weird if you don't own a gun. Despite being what other states might consider "backward" at times people here are generally good-hearted and a lot of them would give the shirt off their backs for someone that needed it.

What customs make your state stand out?
We all wave to people when we're driving. Doesn't matter if you know them or not.
We start getting licenses around age 14.
If you get stranded for any reason someone always stops to help.
We still have open carry laws.
We move sloooowwwwllllyyy. We walk slow, drive slow, speak slow. We're just really not in much of a hurry to get anywhere... unless you've got a stretch of open highway with no sheriffs in sight, then we're maniancs.
We chase tornadoes.

Any festivals/attractions/historical monuments/tourist attractions?
Oh yeah. Most of it has to do with either the early settlers vs. the Indians, the "Dirty 30's" or the Civil War. There's some very interesting history, but unfortunately a lot of it is also quite gruesome.

Dialect differences?
We have our own twang lol.

It's illegal to be gay lol.
Also illegal to have oral sex.
No alcohol sales on Sundays.
There are some old funny ones about flashing headlights and honking twice before driving down the street.Signed Up:

Nice thread truecap.
I just moved to Colorado a few months ago. Fun times so far. Reminds me a tad of Michigan but with more sunshine and more interesting skylines. CO actually gets on ave. more sunshine every year than Miami or San Diego. Some of the drivers here can kiss my ass. At least in California, everyone was predictably a dick behind the wheel. In Denver, some loon will randomly rage over perfectly normal traffic maneuvers. Vegas at least has the excuse that they're probably tweaked out. Physiologically speaking, acclimating to high altitude living is no effing joke.
Unique cultures... it's a bit granola and the most health conscious area that I've lived in. Even over California. I know more hippies now. Tbh, I could puke if I hear another new age spirituality rant or about some enlightened life changing experience. Every other person I meet gives me a slight Cheezle vibe from Grandma's Boy. But it is nice hearing ppl refer to one another's "energy." I like that a lot. And it's not that I dont like hearing about one's beliefs... It just gets old when it's shoved down my throat every other conversation.
Flavors: Green chili seems to be popular. Micro breweries. Organic vegan options are big. Locally grown. I'm not used to having to be selective about where I go for seafood, but I have learned my lesson.
The people are fairly down to earth. It's a land locked state in the middle of the country and it shows a bit. Esp when you have something like the Bay Area California to compare to. Other than when behind the wheel, though, I'd say ppl are really nice and open-minded.
The landscape is gorgeous. The Rockies are a beautiful Mtn range, and when you are just above the foothills, you have an amazing view of the Great Plains. There are some big geographical, ecological and historical landmarks here.
Attractions: Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge... Some of the big winter sports Meccas. NORAD, USAFA, Rocky Mtn national park, the continental divide.
Fascinating state law... Alcohol not sold past midnight and separate from grocery stores. That is so weird to me. Marijuana is legal... Not as fascinating anymore, but fairly unique.

Fascinating state laws, etc?
There is a county in my state, Virginia, called Stafford. In Stafford County it is legal for a man to beat the fuck out of his wife, so long as he does on the outside Courthouse stairs.
