Killing Of A Sacred Deer [2017]👍👍👍

Image Not Found

"A successful surgeon is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister."

There is an apathy that rests over Sacred Deer, as if making the characters more human would somehow make it harder for us to accept the unfolding of the events. Unlike Michael Haneke, who creates believable emotional reactions out of psychological characters (e.g. Funny Games, The Piano Teacher) subdued to the unbelievable, the director of this one has made a career  out of depicting bloodless, unemotional people whose issues don't really engage  on a deeper level. I keep having to remind myself that these people are human in order for the unfolding horror to have the desired effect.

In fact, the nightmare that the film presents seems almost like a liberation from the nightmare that is the mundane, joyless existence of the good doctor and his family.

Image Not Found

Collin Farrell's 2nd colleboration with director Lanthimos and an unusual casting choice, but ever since True Detective I've opened my eyes to what a great actor he actually is... but the true star of Sacred Deer is Barry Keoghan, an actor I've never seen or heard of before but his craft pretty much makes the whole film.

This is something as unusual as a thriller with European arthouse sensibilities, set in (Ohio?) USA. Yet it feels like Britain somehow. Did I mention it's based on a Greek tragedy?

To Live And Die In L.A. [1985] 👍👍👍👍

Don't be discouraged by the seemingly deflated plot about a LA cop tracking down a counterfitter. I was initially, but saw it nontheless as a late entry in my Friedkin summer retrospective. It ended up being quite captivating and I enjoyed it for all the twists and turns and the eye for detail which is Friedkin's trademark.

Plus it basically plays out like a grittier Michael Mann film. But unlike Mann, death doesn't come neatly storyboarded and prepared for - it strikes you so fast and out of the blue you're bound to haunt the grounds you died on. I'm not even being poetic. Shit goes down quicker than you can comprehend it. There's also harrowing car chase in there somewhere worth mentioning.

Thought you'd like to know that I bought "It follows" based on one of your reviews, I haven't watched it yet, but I plan to soon now that the holiday frenzy is over.

So keep em coming. 🙂
I've reached minds lol. Still my favorite horror movie of like, forever it seems. Come back and share your thoughts. Contrary to popular belief you don't have to agree with me, I don't bite heads off.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri [2017] 👍👍

Image Not Found

Three Billboards is like watching three different movies, neither of which has a real conclusion. There's the promising plot that's advertised in the trailer, there's that unlikely character study which marks  the strongest part of the film, and there's the third act that fits neither.

It's also about that time it becomes clear that the person or persons responsible have  decided to trade realism for comic relief... biggest letdown though is the conclusion that really doesn't fit the psychology of the characters or what's been established thus far. I can't put it in perspective as a whole, it just sort of works as bits and pieces.

The Founder [2016]👍👍👍

I generally dislike biopics but this was quite enjoyable. Michael Keaton pretty much carries the whole thing in another one of his multifaceted, energetic  performances.. and they've done a great job with the 1950's.

Also featuring Laura Dern as a piece of prop. Like, why even bother casting a famous face if the part doesn't require any more acting than a sofa?

mother! [2017] 👍👍

Aronofsky goes back to his Requiem days, but while that film was tangible "Mother!" is exclusively a metaphorical mess of Biblical proportions. The latter is not even a spoiler as it's pretty much obvious where the film is going 45 minutes in when Cain kills Abel. I hadn't read anything about it prior to watching it btw.

And then there's Jennifer  Lawrence's Mother Nature... and Bardem as The Poet, the Creator who unleashes the Humanity onto her and the Paradise she's created in the form of a Home. Yeap there's a lot of big first letters here, kind of sums it up.

Image Not Found

It's a nice little allegory though more worthy of ink imo. As Aronofsky put it - " It came out of living on this planet and sort of seeing what’s happening around us and not being able to do anything. I just had a lot of rage and anger, and I wanted to channel it into one emotion, into one feeling. In five days I wrote the first version of the script… It just sort of poured out of me."

And it feels like it too. Poured. I wish he had spent more time on re-writes, after all a feverish nightmare doesn't amount to hell of a lot  without some structure and precision. It's two hours with substance enough to fill a short film.

I will leave you with the words of Martin Scorsese, since I'm finding it hard to decide how much I think of it - -

- - "Many seemed to take joy in the fact that mother! received an F grade from Cinemascore. This actually became a news story. [The movie] had been "slapped" with the "dreaded" Cinemascore F rating, a terrible distinction that it shares with pictures directed by Robert Altman, Jane Campion, William Friedkin and Steven Soderbergh. After I had a chance to see mother!, I was even more disturbed by this rush to judgment. People seemed to be out for blood, simply because the film couldn't be easily defined or interpreted or reduced to a two-word description. Is it a horror movie, or a dark comedy, or a biblical allegory, or a cautionary fable about moral and environmental devastation? Maybe a little of all of the above, but certainly not just any one of those neat categories."

PFT! Is that all? Mine are alphabetized (call me OCD).

Nah just some favorites from the top of the shelf. I categorize them from favorites (first 2-3 shelves) to lesser titles and mass-editions.

Though now when my gf is living here she has her own brand of OCD so she's categorized them after first letter on the cover... meaning not the title of the film in most cases. I find myself having to look for first letter of actors, directors, production companies, taglines! Takes me 10 minutes to find a movie. I should put that bish in check 😒 Good thing she's not a librarian.

Our lad recommends movies for me to watch as he is training to be a film director/script writer but said not to go and see the "'Mother" one haha. His homework is to see as many movies as he can....how bad, hey? He wants to specialise in dark horror comedy.....very Scorpionic 🙂

I've been dabbling in the audiovisual arts myself but as it goes life got in the way. I'm still in the running though. And I do probably hold some sort of record of having seen most of what 20th century cinema has to offer no matter how obscure.

If he's serious about seeing everything I just happen to have a key to the rabbit hole. No, it's not a key to the dark web where they sacrifice humans but a site with a huge variety of artsy fartsy titles for download that you won't find anyplace else, but it requires an invitation from a member (moi). He may already be on there though.

Nope, it's on my list so I may get to it next week. Was it good? I've read about it but Im still unsure what its theme or themes are? P.T. Anderson is a hit or miss with me altough I consider him mandatory viewing in any case.

Go see it if you can....it's interesting and has........no I won't say as it might spoil it for you. Just to say, the main character in it, I found irritating to say the least but it was worth watching for the ending .... let me know what you think ?

Did Anderson do Boogie Nights? I saw that. Did you see it and any others of his you think are worth watching ?

Mostly the best thing about it is the set design and wardrobe, but a film noir is a film noir

Crazy, Stupid, Love 👍👍👍👍👍

User Submitted Image

So I have seen this before and almost forgotten about it till I popped it into the DVD cuz my gf wanted to see something light and funny.

We have now seen it twice. If there ever was a holy grail of the American rom-com this is it. It's one of those movies so well thought-out, you will have to revisit it a couple of times to discover the full extent of its subtle briliance.

The characters are alive, the twists and turns feel completely organic, everything is significant and connected. The screenplay to this movie should be studied at film schools. There's not one false note.

Essentially it's a much-needed, up-to-date study in the variaties of masculine sexual confusion with a near perfect cast: Steve Carell as the beaten  beta cuckold divorceé, Gosling as the alpha-douche with a heart (and personality), Julianne Moore as the cheating wife who transcedents being only that, etc.

Image Not Found

(Yes it's that movie.)

Fact is all the characters are fleshed out and rather sympathetic and easy to like, in the end we are left with a feeling like we have just finished watching a tv-series and are forced to leave some of our favourite characters behind - and not a 2 hour movie.

The only thing that needed more work was the title; I wouldn't be surprised if it's held a potential fan-base (and critics) back. I suppose for the lack of a better word it's a contemprorary romantic comedy for dudes.

Since the first time Mel Gibson appears on the screen it's pretty clear he does not connect to the material at all, in fact he seems pretty awkward, which isn't surprising since it's a humorless mess and everything feels forced af. John Lithgow too, an otherwise sympathetic actor, just sucks. You'd think having these two charismatic performers pinned against eachother should be a riot, but I didn't laugh once. I did fall asleep halfway through and never bothered returning to it. Let me know if I missed anything.

Tight-knit romance in beautiful settings, beautifully shot with beautiful people. I loved the blue and purple colors of the night. I was surprised they had cellphones in the movie bc it makes me think of present day while it has a timeless magic about it that brings me back to the 1950's. In retrospect I'm surprised it didn't win Best Picture bc it's all in there.

Try and watch it on the big screen, so much is lost on the small one

The lovely music helps to detract from the character's miserable face

we watched the 2nd edition of KingsMan 2. Also we were on and off watching the "Dark" series, German speaking.

re-watched the French film which was made into US, Valerian. a city of a thousand planets.

it's sad but the director helped make the very popular and hit movie long ago, FIFTH Element

for the idea of this film, the valerian series

but it didnt do as well unforunately.

i think it's because it didnt have enough advertisement, to make it big, and people knew less about it.

weird how the original was to pave the way for "valerian the city of a thousand planets"

it was a very popular french comic book

The director had too much freedom this time and the result is way too cartoony and incoherent, and everything is tasteless, unless for 5th element where he had hollywood on his back

i've noticed that alot of Americans also love some European shows,

and make it their own way, do it americanized style .

also japanese shows love some american shows too and vice versa.

ghost in the shell would have been better with a different actress. many thought she was too girly for the part. And the Major is a woman, not a girl.

also, the movie Valerian, had Rihanna in it..and people thought that was an unnecessary part.

but i think they wanted her in there for popularity?

I'm not the biggest fan of Nicolas Refn Winding so when I heard he made some sort of satirical commentary on the modeling world I expected it to be his worst film to date, something like a hollow, overstylized  'Mulholland Drive'. What I got was something that closely resembles a Lana del Rey music video. It's not as much satire as it is a farce.

Clocking it at 2 hrs it's kind of a stretch at times, but by the end of it I kind of wished for it not to end. It has a mesmerizing, hypnotic atmosphere that owes a lot to Cliff Martinez score, which is actually quite trashy in that it sounds like a synthesized porno soundtrack.

But with all the bits and pieces coming together I found my mind marinating in it for days to follow. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

The Beguiled [2017] 👍👍👍

 Image Not Found

I loved the 1971 Clint Eastwood original. It was just right. And when you know a movie by heart the re-make will usually feel like a generic and rushed  reconstruction of scenes, which it initially did. The old one felt more tongue-in-cheek while this plays out more like a gothic soap in misty-grey colors, no music.

Sofia Coppola said she wanted to focus more on the relationships between the girls (I am to assume she felt the old version didn't) which is not something I walked away with: the characters and the relationships between them never come to life, they are more like puppets moved around by Coppola. Ironically, the women in the 1971 version felt more alive and the relationships were way better fleshed out.

Image Not Found

Another problem I had with it is the soldier's motivation for seducing and decieving the women. In the old version it's for survival - he's at constant risks of being handed over to the enemy so he needs to get on the good side of every one but does so in a way that will not favor his well-being in the long run. Here however, he is told he can leave when he feels well enough yet despite the dangers, he stays because-- ? He likes gardening?

This is not a thumbs down though. There's enough here to enjoy but do so without watching the Eastwood one first because I think that one will stand a viewing regardless, while Coppola's version loses a lot of its appeal if seen the other way around.

I didn't initially care for the natural lighting either, it looks too dimmed and dull and dark at times but in the end the whole atmosphere kinda grew on me.
