Although victorius in the deeper context, the ending almost tore my heart out. (based on true events about the grave injustices to petty criminal/escapee Henry Young back in the early 40's on Alcatraz Island, and was the sole driving force behind the final extinction of 'solitary confinement ...'19 days was supposed to be the max, instead they gave Young 3 years + only one hour of daylight per year, turning him into an animal/only a shell of himself, eventually driving him to lash out in the biggest way. (No big surprise who the real criminals were here.)
..btw, the acting in this movie was superb. Bacon played Henry Young, and Slater was the new defense attorney on his very first criminal court case. His superior gave it to him, because he thought it was a shoe-in for the prosecution anyway, a monkey could do it. But nothing could've been further from the truth in this 'precedent' setting case.
