Most people find them creepy because they have never truly observed how intelligent, sweet, playful and FUNNY they are!!!! AND THEY CLEAN THEMSELVES CONSTANTLY THEY ARE QUITE CLEANLY. I love pet rats after I decided to try one as a pet a few years ago and now I am OBSESSED WITH THEM!!! Dogs react to them with total awe and respect, even Pitt-bulls, fascinated by rats as if are little Yoda's because they can sense their innate wisdom!!! Think Splinter from TMNT hahaha. I hate how they are injected with disease in the name of 'science' which is corrupt and only wants to make money selling drugs that only mask the symptoms.....never heal people. Do you hate rats? Love rats? THink their tails are creepy? (They use them for their amazing balancing abilities btw)

I wouldn't say I favourize rats like you seem to do, I pretty much love all animals, but I got gerbils for my 12th birthday and ever since I've had a weak spot for them. Even today when I see pics of gerbils with their tiny hands... I just want to squash the cuteness out of them!

I wish they were bigger, like lions so that I could wrestle them!

Anyway the gerbil I had really had a personality of his own, he was very distinguished , a gentleman even. He would always take care of his 'cell-mate', who was selfish and quite a little coward. lol

I would take him in my hands and he would just lay down on my palm, flat like a pancake, close his eyes and let me pet him. Also when you start talking to them they get all jumpy and playful. And they like playing hide and seek too, especially in the early morning hours when you're trying to sleep. So yeah, there is more to these little creatures than people seem to think. Unfortunately most people seem to measure intelligence and worth by size.

awww....Ive never had a gerbil but they sound kind of similar to rats and very cute in their own right 🙂 Especially the pancake part and how they get excited and jump around spasticly....I love how you call him a gentleman, lol. I also know what you mean I could squish all little creatures to death too because of their cuteness!!! but i try to avoid that...

Everything IslandMoonGoddess says about rats is true. I had one when I was a kid. She was the greatest pet, other than my one dog. As she says, my rat was clean, and very clever.

My mother wasn't to sure about my new critter. Well, not at first. I was living in the basement of the house we all lived in. A rather cool, dank, part of the house, actually. My mother's opinion of my rat changed when all the spiders, ants, and other creepy crawlies all vanished. It seems my rat had a huge appetite for just such critters.

Her sticking her whiskery nose in my ear in the middle of the night seemed to always be good for a rat laugh, though...
