let me start off by saying, I'm kind of a big deal where I'm from. I lead an army of 5,000 soldiers, I'm Rome's most celebrated general, I was next in line to replace Marcus Aurelius blah blah blah. let's get to the story: I hadn't seen my wife in two years, 264 days & this morning, give or take, because of my job, leading civil wars, seizing territory, that kind of stuff. ANYWAYS, I wrote to her everyday (and keep in mind, these are not your everyday hallmark greeting cards. the poems I wrote for this woman- they could make a wild mountain lion roll over & purr!) And I write these letters not expecting to hear back from her. I mean, she has an entire farm to tend to, chores, crops, defending the property, not to mention we have a 9 year old son, so she's got a lot on her plate. BUT one day, I get great news from my bosses in Rome. So it turns out we're fighting a battle at Vindobona, which is literally a short horseride from where I live, near the mountains. I write a beautiful sonnet to her, and attach another note explaining how I'll be nearby next week, and that I would love to spend the night, have a home cooked meal, catch up, that sort of thing. I seal the envelope, hand it to the messenger, and this time instruct him to wait for a verbal response from my wife. So the messenger returns by nightfall, telling me she's totally down, and can't wait for my visit. Great news, right? The next day, I get a letter from her saying she doesn't think it's a good idea if we eloped, it was her time of the month, and some other random excuses.

My question is, why didn't she just tell me up-front, when she first had the chance? Did she not want to embarrass me in front of the messenger by verbally saying "no." Or is she just playing games to see how bad I want to see her?

P.S. usually, I would just talk to my wife about his sort of issue, but that was the last time we talked. It's kind of a long story- after the war, I was unlawfully prisoned and sent away to be executed. Using my Gladiator tactics, I managed to survive, but when I finally made it home, I found my wife's battered corpse. She was brutally raped and left to die by Roman soldiers. Not to mention my son was tied to a stake and burnt to death.

Maximus, who knows exactly 'why' people do what they do, just give her some good credit for discreteness (arn't ladies supposed to be discrete) and please don't even think of shooting the messenger. Just know she loved you and call it a day. I'm sure you'll avenge their deaths eventually, which should really be the 'bigger' FISH to fry? no pun intended..

btb, you wouldn't wanna know the flaky cell-phone drama in this century. Technology at its finest. Buck up, my friend ...
