I just recieved news that my little Lhasa Apso has kidney failure. I'm going to loose her soon. I have to make a pretty tough decision. She's lost all her muscle mass and all her nutrients are going out with her urine. She will soon vomit uncontrollably and go down hill from there. What a good girl, she's only five.

I'm really sorry. Losing a dog is so hard ...
Give her lots and lots of love and attention and when it is time, you will know that you gave her the best life a dog could ask for and that you spared her a lot of suffering in the end.

That is heartbreaking news -especially for one so young. I'm so sorry
What has the vet said about her quality of life? Making the decision as to when it is time is the most difficult decision you have to make, but it is also a most loving decision. You don't want your beloved pet to be in pain and to be suffering.
Now is the time to just enjoy each day that you have with her. Let her enjoy the things and places that she likes best. Cherish your time with her now -love her and spoil her.

Thanks again everyone. He said luckily this is a pretty painless problem. But that he's surprised at this point she still wants to eat. She still has a pretty good appetite. All the nutrients from her food are being moved right back out though. She's nothing but bones. When she's no longer interested in food is when I'll have to euthanize her. So sad. Earthypisces, I'm so sorry about your loss. Animals are family. This past summer, my 16 year old cockatiel died in my hand without warning, her head just slowly slumped down and that was it. It's never easy to loose a loved one, animal or human.

Wow, that brought tears to my eyes. That was beautiful. I'm sorry about your kittie too. Loosing them is hard. When I moved out of my parent's home, we had a white one like her. She had mamory cancer. She wasn't able to wait the two weeks for me to come back and say goodbye to her. She at least lived her full life. She was put down at 13.

What the hell are you talking about? She walked outside on her own....up and down the steps to freaking pee, she ate and drank until the last few days....til I made the appointment. Have you ever had to decide when your pet should die? How dare you tell me I'm an asshole for loving my dog, you bitch. When I made this thread she was just diagnosed. She made it a month. She was never in physical pain, her body just got weak and shut down. I would never have watched her suffer. You are damn lucky I don't know you, if I did I would knock you off your block for being so stupid. You know nothing about her quality of life. Don't you fucking tell me about what my dogs life was like before she lay in my arms drawing her last breath. You freaking cold hearted bitch!

Are you kidding me? Don't be stupid like her. Because I knew my dog, because medically its not a painful illness, because her vet said so when I asked him, because my mother is a nurse and said the same thing, because my sister is also a nurse who does dialysis and said the same thing. My dog had kidney failure which does not allow nutrients to stay in the body to nourish it, meaning she looses muscle mass until they just quit working altogether. She was not in pain, you'd have to be an idiot to look at an animal and not see if they were in pain or not. She just lost energy and slept a lot. Is that a good enough answer for you? You two act like no one had ever had to face the decision as to when the right time is. Her dying naturally at home in my arms rather than me questioning when the right time is, as the needle is being put in her, watching her head slump over and having to driver her lifeless body back home with me, was the best thing that could have happened. Since when is it someone's fault when an animal dies naturally? I believe that meant it was God's time for her to go. You people are insane.

Have you read "Rescuing Sprite" by Mark Levin?
It is a good book for people who are sad when their dog is terminally ill.

Thanks scorpiofish, I have not read that book. I wish though that I was only dealing with the loss of my dog. There is so much more I'm dealing with than that. But I just got news that the government is going to give me a grant to go back to school. I fall under the "displaced homemaker". Those of you who think I'm getting a free ride living in my "hell" can use your fingers to look it up, then you can use them to calm yourselves down. (I start march 5). You didn't redeem yourself dazed. You're still being an ass. Yeah, its sad an animal died, but I lost her, and two toddlers lost her. There's really nothing to joke about and I'm sure on one sees the humor in it.
Poor little baby, brings a tear to my eye. I respect animals more than humans and stuff like this breaks my heart. My condolences.

Awww thank you so much. I've lived and breathed animals for as long as I can remember. Every job I've ever had revolved around animals. They are my true passion. I've never not had a pet. They've ranged from tarantulas and rats to sugar gliders and flying squirrels. I can't imagine life without animals. 12 years is a long time.....I'm sure that is incredibly tough. I have a conure that should give me around 30 years. That will be my record for the longest time with a pet. He is evil....not cuddly like a cat. He used to be though, he nustled in my hair back in the day. When he was a baby I hand fed him through a syringe, but he still became a turd. He's funny though. He says my name and "Let's go Yankees" to name a few.

There's no evidence to support that the Cancer loved the dog ... actually, there is evidence to prove that she didn't love the dog = letting it suffer over a month.
She can SAY she did, and obviously that is what people go by because most people really are so superifical that they go by face value.
However, to say the dog was loved wasn't the actual action taken.
The action taken was selfish, and evidence that where the concern was for the Cancer herself, at the expense of the dog's feelings, who was left to die, rather than put down like what the humane thing to do was.

Well as if your ridiculous opinion made any difference to me whatsoever. I know the truth and so do the people who choose not to falsely and negatively judge my character. If you think your statement hurts me....your statement hold absolutely no value. There is never a time where one feels that decision is right. And like I said, she was active enough to walk up and down four patio steps on her own up until the night before. When she spent the day in one spot and didn't want to get up to eat or pee, that's when I made the appointment. I'd say my call was pretty precise as to when she needed to go because she went on her own within three hours of it. She kept me from doing it for her so nothing anyone says in here will make me feel bad. If I had done it sooner, it would have been too soon. Heck, she even ran along the fence and barked a few times at other dogs. No, nothing in here actually stated that I loved her but you are a moron for thinking I didn't and that you actually know me at all. I just find it odd that your fingers could even type out the word love without going up in flames. Btw you are the one in these forums who is labeled a terrible person above all others. So really, why don't you go run with a pair of scissors now. For some reason when I picture you, I picture that fat female truck driver from the Peewee Herman movie. What flavor condom do you think your husband was wearing when he was last tearing into his good buddy?

That's adorable!
I love working with shy/semi-feral cats at my rescue org. It's so amazing to see a cat who won't even let you touch him or her transform into a little social butterfly who constantly rubs against your legs, purrs, and wants to play with you and/or other cats. It just takes some patience. People wouldn't believe how many "scaredy cats" turn into the sweetest little things when you work with them and just give them a chance!

Aww that does feel like such an accomplishment I'm sure. That's a cute thought you gave me in my head. I was always attracted to the less tame animals too, just to challenge them to warm up to you. I had a chinchilla in school who was like those feral cats. No one wanted to touch him because he bit and made crabbing sounds at them. He was "mine" and he let me hold him, pet him and he never bit me. I took him home for all the vacations. The heat got to the poor thing one year. They can't get wet and they don't regular their body heat. The pet industry has since then come out with a marble slab for them to lay on and keep cool.Signed Up:

Living in Ohio when I was younger allowed me the chance to once surrogate a baby skunk, a ground squirrel and a baby raccoon. That's my dream job. To rehabilitate wildlife. Where I live now is too rural for that unfortunately.

Thank you. It's so empty without her here. When I come home from taking the kids to preschool, I still expect her to greet me at the door wagging her tail at me. She did that up until the last few days. She used to constantly scratch the patio door wanting in and out, in and out even when she was healthy. I can sometimes still hear that noise in my head. She was the first dog that was mine and not my parents too. I miss her. I grew up with the little breeds like her. We always had a Shi-tzu or a Lhaso Apso in our lap.Signed Up:

I think my cat had this problem when I was a little kid. He had to get put to sleep as well.
But now, I'll bet your pup's in Pet Paradise, probably chasing my cat up a tree, right now as we speak!
Don't let random DXPinheads get to you - from what I gather, you listened to your vet and did your best to accommodate your pooch. The vet is the expert here, not a bunch of cretins and rodents on the internet.

Thank you and right.....that is a plug I'd have pulled along time ago. The doc wouldn't even get the sentence out.
I asked the vet how long she had, he said she is in that 1% of animals that still want to eat, that he was surprised she still wanted food. He said it's painless to them and give her whatever shevwants to eat. At that point she still scratched on her bag of kibble. A week later, she didn't want it. I put her on wet food. She ate that for about another week. Then she was given deli meat and she liked bread. I bought herSigned Up:

packaged of angus beef strips toward the end. Then she was getting very selective to when and what she wanted but still wanted water. She always drank a lot of water. She ran up and down the steps with ease up to the time I made the decision. She got so weak at the end that she stumbled off the last step and it broke my heart. Then her legs started to shake trying to squat to pee. After that she fell over and laid in the grass. That was it for me. My kids dad kept saying wait, wait, let her go on her own. I said no I can't watch this. I made the call the next morning. It hit me hearing her say "5:15". I laid down and sobbed like a baby. It was finally going to happen. I had to take my son to preschool and I picked her up and held her when I got home to spend her last hours with her. She went withing 30 seconds of me putting her in my lap. I called my mother in- law to come get my daughter and I continued to hold her. This is how much I did "not" love my dog..... Her bladder muscles relaxed all over me and I still could not bring myself to put her down. I sat with her and her pee all over me for I'd say a half hour til I felt I had to call and let the vet know she didn't make it.
Sorry about your cat. It happened to my brothers cat. Theirs died the day after they found out. It seems to be painful for cats for some reason. Same with my grandmothers cat who bit her when she touched its side. Honestly even when you feel the right time to decide, you still second guess yourself, thinking am I doing the right thing? Because some days were better than others. I thought what if I do this and tomorrow she would have been active and had her appetite. I'm glad she went while I was holding her and that I didn't have to do it for her.

Dogs In Heaven?
An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice grassy, woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so they walked on. They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven" he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him. The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed, I'm sorry but he can't come with you."
"What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If he can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life, I can't desert him now."
"Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area, he'll promise you anything, but the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road."
So the old man and dog went on. They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "S'cuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?"
"Of course, there's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable"
"You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere."
"Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?"
"No sir, that's why I didn't go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in.
We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final."
The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven."N
"You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?"
"That was the Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"
