The Larry Craig fiasco hits close to home because I grew up in Idaho and was roommates with one of Sen. Craig's adopted sons in college (great guy, fellow stoner). I met Sen. Craig a few times, decent enough person although vanilla and animatronic as most successful politicians are these days. I would have actually believed that he was a victim of circumstance if this wasn't a recurrent theme in his behavior.
The issue isn't whether or not the Senator is a closet case, personally I could care less. The issue is that it's just the latest evidence that our government, especially the GOP, is teeming with self-serving hypocrites. I don't care if Sen. Craig blew 20 married dudes at the local glory hole last night, but he should wipe the smug smile (and whatever else) off his face the next day when denouncing gays as perversions of nature.
I hope he resigns, and not just because of his hypocrisy. Any adult, especially a career politician, that signs a plea agreement without consulting a lawyer is an idiot.
The problem isn't the media, sex always sells and their job is to give the viewers what they want. Craig was hoping that this would be swept under the rug and didn't hire counsel so as not to draw attention. The media should be thanked for pulling him out of the closet.
Congress is the one that isn't focusing on the real issues. They waste months debating gay marriage and stem cell research while healthcare and education (and of course Iraq) go ignored. Why? For the votes, of course. The religious right punches the ticket for a majority of Congress to ride the Congressional gravy train and they pander to their interests. Religion is killing this nation.
The Democrats get their fair share of money from religious interests, why do you think they dance around the hot button issues? Votes are always available for a price regardless of party. And religion is the ultimate corporation, tax-free. A multi-party system would only be a small step toward solving that problem. But at least mud would be slung from multiple sides whenever a party member gets caught sending lewd messages to underage boys.
I agree that the media over-hypes everything, but how else are Faux News and CNN going to fill 24 hours of programming? Obviously someone is watching, which doesn't bode well for the collective intelligence of this country. And I wouldn't trust government numbers on anything these days. That means that only 1% of the fraud was so blatant that it couldn't be denied.
I admit to experiencing extreme schadenfreude every time the latest government scandal unfolds. Maybe the voters will wake up and realize that most of the politicians they elect are only in it for the money.
