It's easy to come across alternative means to the pill, if one does a google search for "non hormonal contraception".
I have an IUD...I honestly dunno what all the fuss is about!! They have come a long way since one brand got a bad rap in the 60's / 70's. I haven't had any problems with mine, and it's been in for over a year now. I think it's an avenue worth investigating, for sure. In fact, when I went to the hospital to have mine fitted, the nurse said to me she's surprised that more women don't have them. They're very reliable, no fiddling around before sex etc and it stays in place for 5 - 10 years (depending on which one it is) unless you want it taken out sooner...

not only are the spermicides not as effective as the pill, but many of the "films" can be very uncomfortable until they dissolve. I tried these several times a few years ago but found the process of inserting, waiting, and the discomfort (like something scratching and poking against the inside of the vagina) was just as much, if not more, of a sex-drive killer than the pill.

Spermicides are only 94% effective when used properly.
the jellies need to be applied deep in the vaginial canal and honestly, inserting something so sterile like that just before intercourse completely KILLS the mood. Plus, the jellies are cold.
The pill is 99.98% effective...think of the millions using it everyday, the percentage of failure is bound to occur. I'd rather take my chances with the pill, which is MUCH more effective and there is much less room for error.
The IUD, I agree with you Archer, is best used if you're sure you don't want to get pregnant for many years. From my understanding, it is most often recommended for women who have already given birth or are with a long term partner.

Not to mention that contraceptives now come in many shapes and sizes. The nueva ring eliminates much the hormanal inbalances that can occur because it gives you a constant dose of hormones. Some pills have different levels of hormones and you have to try out several before you find right pill for you.
If you or your girlfriend's sex drive is significantly lowered because of the pill, it would be safer to try another. If missing pills is an issue, try a patch or a ring.
Although I would steer WAY away from the depo shot, that thing just freaks me out! Women are supposed to have periods!!
My IUD is a non-hormonal one, and the brand / type is Multiload (copper & plastic). If you and hormones don't mix well, make sure you stay away from the Mirena IUD as that one does have hormones. Feel free to PM me if you want any more info...

heh heh... multiload... i was on lo-ovral for several years and i loved it! it was the 1st pill my doc prescribed to me and it was perfect. no side effects whatsoever. unfortunately it didn't contribute to me losing weight but i didn't gain either. no mood swings. periods became regular (i was able to kill birds with one stone). then one day i had a physical when i was about 23. i told my gyno i was a little concerned because all of a sudden my periods were coming about a week to a week and a half later every month. i was in a long-term relationship so for a good 4 months in a row i would freak out and run and buy a pregnancy test cuz i was so late. i shit u not my period would show up the day after i took the test. she figured it was my human error (even though i was a pro at it by this time and usually sober) so she decided to try me out on the new fangled patch. i HATED that thing! i felt like i was being so pumped full of hormones that i was going crazy. literally! i had mood swings from hell and i felt awful. i stuck with it, and so did my poor boyfriend, for 2 months before i shoved the whole kit and caboodle. i've been hormone free ever since. fuck it! i'll stick with condoms.
