i used to be naturally trusting on the basis that i say what i mean and mean what i say and kinda 'expect' others to be the same. now i'm just plain suspicious. i look for the hidden meanings in what is said to me and filter the bullshit to get to the truth.

i think it's sad to have to be that way. i always viewed being honest and trusting as being qualities but they appear to be weaknesses in real life. unfortunately life seems to be 9 parts bullshit to 1 part truth.

so....do you tend to trust someone until they've proven they can't be trusted or do you mistrust everyone until they've proven themselves trustworthy?

I'm naturally trusting and I hate it. I feel very naive after someone has revealed their true colors. With that said I'm shamelessly good at reading people and my sensors instinctively steer me away from untrustables.lol Annoyingly, the only people who can bypass my intuition and let me down are family members.
I actually made an effort to be more cynical and suspicious of others but then I read a quote from Stephen Colbert that said "Don't be afraid to be a fool. Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly just cynics. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don't learn anything. Cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us."

In God We Trust, All Others We Monitor.

I used to be very trusting of others but got burned in early in my youth for being thus.
I even went so far as ignoring my inner intuition in an effort to give others the benefit
of the doubt, but I have come to learn from experience that I can trust, but I may have
to keep on eye on them and expect the unexpected, for better or worse.
This helps me to not be overly critical of others shortcomings, knowing that I have my
faults, too.
When and where I apply my trust really depends on who or what I am dealing with.
Sometimes, if I don't know the facts, I am on alert and will tend to pursue credible
intelligence, cross-reference and verify. The degree and intensity, thereof, will depend
on the nature of whatever I am concerned with.
It can be a blessing and a curse at the same time.
At it's core, following my gut instincts have kept me out of a lot of trouble.
Sometimes it's a hit, sometimes it's a miss and I am going down in flames.

What they say about Sagittarians is pretty darned true.
They DO have the capability of being Daffy-Dill from Dopeyville stupid
and somehow have the dumb luck of being able to "move-on" like nothing happened.
BUT.... I don't think that is true of ALL Sags... though, but I accept that
I could be wrong.

unfortunately, when you trust easily people think you're gullible. i know people think I am but what they don't realise is that it's an act. over time, i've realised the quickest way to see someone's true colours is by creating the impression you believe everything they tell you.....then you can sit back and wait for them to trip up cos most people can't help themselves taking advantage of someone they see as being a mug. they do it without conscience too.
