"While all of you people are living without a care, hundred of children are dying of hunger. Pain is the only thing going on for them. That's until they die, which is the best they can hope for. Some people are aware of this and they are helping those children everyday, but their efforts are not enough.

Now that you are aware of this, will you do something about it? It's up to you."

What did you feel when you heard something like this?

The meaning of "ignorance is bliss" is that you can lead a carefree life as long as you are not aware of the "evil" and the "ugly". You are ignorant and that's your excuse. However, once you are made aware of the facts, you are no longer innocent. You have to make a choice and, depending of which path you choose, you will be judged accordingly.

Most people choose not to care and delude themselves so they don't feel responsible or guilty. Some do care but all they do is complain and deliberate, not taking any real action. Some really don't give a shit and take advantage of the situation. Lastly, very few people choose to confront those evils and bring about justice.

The owner of "ignorance is bliss" was most likely someone who tried to fight, but eventually gave up.

LiB, i can see your point but the starvation in regions like the horn of africa isn't as a result of ignorance like that you're talking about. they are true victims of profiteering capitalists and unless their starving children are seen on major TV networks elsewhere in the world, they will continue to die. 13 million people affected there.

to me, ignorance means ignoring truth deliberately....irresponsibility is something else altogether.

I call that denial. People choose to be in denial because they don't want to face the "reality" they are aware of. They pretend those evils don't exist so they can carry on with their lives as if nothing was happening. They pretend to be ignorant so they don't have to take responsibility. But since they have been made aware, they are no longer ignorant/innocent. They become part of those evils, even if they don't take an active role.

The thing is, ignorance and denial are very correlated. When people are trapped in denial, they become increasingly more ignorant and detached from the real world. But the fact that they are aware of the big picture (and they have to deny this) makes them just as guilty.

"True" Ignorance (the one you are born with) ---> Awareness ---> Denial ---> "False" Ignorance ---> Detachment

yeah i take your point about the 'living without a care' part! that IS offensive really cos it's praying on your guilt to get you to cough up your hard earned wonga....like everything's for free where we live!!

in spain there are a lot of beggars who usually sit in the doorways of supermarkets and they carry signs which inevitably details their 6 kids, no job, no money...etc. i bought one some nappies and basic groceries once and got a look of death from the woman begging cos i think she wanted me to get her beer or give her the money so she could get it. i dunno...i find those people very distasteful. particularly as a mother cos i would never stoop so low as to use them as leverage to get charity from decent hardworking people.

to me the spanish culture generally if applied globally would eliminate starvation. they are only concerned with immediate and extended family. they take care of eachother and watch out for eachother. and if you have no family they will give you family (unless you're a psychopath) and they will take care of you..in sickness and in health.

the spanish are quite ignorant people in the sense that they rarely see beyond their own 'sphere'. if all of their people are good, life is good and if things go wrong, they pull together to fix it.

i guess it could be called selective ignorance. spain isn't a very charitable nation and if there's an international disaster, they are the last country to send a couple of soldiers over to help out, lol!! but even in the grip of recession, they live a rich life here because they care enough about eachother to make them strong against anything negative going on 'out there' somewhere.

For what it's worth, you'll find people like that in the US, too.

To those who are offended, I guess I will take responsibility since I don't remember what commercial I took that quote from. Moreover, I get the message it tried to get across and I agree with it.

Life hasn't been exactly easy for me, but it really hasn't been all that hard either. For some it's really hard, but they can make it through. Can we say the same about those children? Can our problems compare to those who are helpless and suffering everyday until they die?

My apologies and this is all I will say on this matter. I would like to keep on topic.

why do we always have to know? cant we just stay in a fog of confusion? how come i just cant leave well enough alone?

i always have to get to the bottom of something even when i know the outcome is not going to be great. is it truly a good thing to know everything? like a German Sheppard sniffing out a hiding criminal, we find out everything.

sometimes i hate being in the know. i hate my BS radar. i want to be stupid and dumb and live in a constant honeymoon phase. i want to accept anything anyone gives me. i dont want to second guess anyone. i want the wool pulled over my eyes.
