Does where you are born and how you are brought up have a strong influence on your personality?

Here my culture always stress respect authority and elders, and follow tradition.
The people here are pretty passive and don't like to start fights. We don't want to get involved in fights.
Many chinese people are called wimps in general. the people here are also very competitive and have strong moral compass. Group harmony and consciousness is always more important than the wants and desire of the individual.

I wonder what I would be like if I am born in a different country.

As a half asian bought up in a European country, this was also what I was bought up to believe from my mother and I have always maintained that, not so much traditional values though.

All in all I feel that I have kept up with a lot of asian values whether they were directly taught to me or not, for instance, knowing alot about superstitions (wasn't taught, I just know it, probably more so because I was interested in what asians believe while I was growing up) I have always repeated to my own children to respect your elders. Little things like that because I think it's important. So I feel it has influenced my personality to a certain degree but not as much as it would have should I have been bought up in Malaysia where it would be alot more strict!!!

I am proud of where I come from and I am proud of being brought up with the values, morals and faith my parents instilled. I would remain within these boundaries but still be the person I want to be. Values and beliefs do not restrict you in any way I don't think...your mindset is what restricts you.

I would want the same for my kids. I just look at the state of societies without strong family values, faith or belief and shudder.

"red_aries, if you hadnt been born in China, Im sure you wouldnt hate zenalchemy 🙂"

Lets not talk about her. I ended my hate on her long ago..........🙂

I think the place you are born in, or whether you are in poverty or not, and the nature of the education system has a strong influence on ther person you are now.

Chinese culutre is pretty introverted. Like people usually do not stick their nose on other people's matters. This is both good and bad in a sense.

the people here are also very hardworking and industrious, but we really keep a low profile. Hardwork always has a strong root in my culture. We are also not as liberal and open as the west. culturre always stress obey authority and support the status quo, which is really shitty.

I grew up on a farm in the Midwest. It's hardwork and family first and helping out friends in need. The pioneer spirit is still strong in us. Come floods, tornados, blizzards and dusts storms (hasn't happened in some time now) we roll up our sleeves and throw sandbags to keep the water from coming and help friends and family rebuild what the storms destroy. We do it without crying for help from the government or complaining (much lol). It' just the way life goes sometimes.
I guess that shaped me into a very determined person who doesn't give up easily. Even when it looks hopeless I always try to see the angles that might get me to my goal. I'm a hard worker. I'm not afraid to get dirty. I love the outdoors.
We also are to respect our elders. The things they lived through and the stories they tell. We were always grateful for what we had compared to them. The walking up hill both ways story always made me laugh though.
It made me very leery of people though. Small towns.... gossip. Wow. It was horrible in my town. I'm the type to try and mind my own business just because of those damn gossips that'd spread anything they heard around.
I had it pretty good growing up. 🙂 I'm very grateful.

I think it does. It's sure part of you. I grew up quite poor and I think I may have a stonger feel for the finer things in life because of it. I know what money can buy and what it can't. I think I handle, stressful situations quite well because of where I grew up. I'm naturally a calm guy but I grew up in a troubled setting and I think it's harder to stay at peace in that setting. I also have a lot of pride.

I dont know, i just do what i want LOL.

hahahaha @ Prince,

I'm the same way, however I would say the way I grew up and the values placed affect what I do right now. When I was young, I paid close attention to my environment. The positves, the negatives, the in-betweens, all of it. I was like a sponge, I soaked in everything. What I perceived as being terrible, I stayed away, it repelled me instantly. Whatever I felt was nice, I gravitated towards it. I never went by what I 'thought' was nice because I didn't really know much when I was young, I was still learning like most kids. I went mainly by what I felt.

Too bad I don't still have that -- the whole feelings over thought. I think too much right now.
