i think anything in the bedroom, including yourself.... 😉

just kidding...i have the same birthday so i can tell you this: something that is thoughtful and personal (like SIL said), related to something he is interested in or passionate about - it shows him how much you've been paying attention these past couple of months.

something too expensive would turn me off, to be honest...i'd rather appreciate the thought behind something. taking him out to really nice dinner would be great; and you can present your thoughtful gift then.

*runs away laughing*

...

*walks back* 😉 the smilies kill me too.

i like those ideas scorp-in-law. my gift giving tends to include utilitarian things(what can i say, im a cap)... things i notice a person would find useful in their life, very handy, perhaps something i notice that they need. i myself would like that. and i put a big line between need and want. but when it comes to the s.o.... im going to want to lavish him with both a 'need' and a 'want' because its nice to be treated with a luxury. and if i've gone crazy, which often happens when it comes to spending on a loved one, i'll throw in something that falls under both categories if i can find it. i think the key to gift giving for anyone is getting something that you sought out with them, what they embody, and/or what they like in mind. ahh, it's so much fun.

Yes,
the most important thing about the present is to be personilized, nothing generic (eg. a gift voucher, a tie, etc).
If he ever mentioned something that he loves, that is perfect, get something connected with it. The tickets for his favourite team that you can go together to, and maybe a dinner/lunch in his favourie restaurant. Music sounds great, who wouldn't be happy with an I-pod, just make sure he doesn't have the same one already. A subscription to the magazine (if he loves music, then maybe some magazine about the music?).
Doesn't matter how expensive it is, it must show that you put tought into it. The present that shows that you know him. That will surely put the smile on his face.
