Mercury in Scorpio

How significant is one's Mercury, overall? Especially considering it's in retrograde right now. His is in Scorpio, and mine is in Sagittarius.

Okay, so, recently I've read that if one's Rising sign is dominated by Mercury, such as Virgo is, the reflection of this Rising sign is filtered at least somewhat by their placement of Mercury. A little more light research found similar articles stating this. Should the same hold true for Moon sign?
My Moon is in Virgo and my Mercury is in Sagittarius. I am most definitely very much a scatter-brain in conversation in person. It's like I have this huge amount of information to spill and it all makes so much sense, and I can see a big picture, but the big picture has so many details in order to make sense in words, and when I try to relate it, it's out of order so much it's incoherent at first. In typing I can first put the puzzle together and sound vaguely smart at times.
A Scorpio/Virgo with Rising Pisces doesn't seem at all like this in any of the many things I've read so far. So unless there's something ELSE to explain this conundrum, which is important to me, I could be losing interest in astrology soon.
I'm guessing now that my friend's Rising sign is in Gemini, as I learn more and more about all this. Gemini is also ruled by Mercury and so should definitely be influenced heavily by his Mercury placement, which is for sure in Scorpio. His Sun/Moon is Libra/Aquarius.
Any thoughts NOW on the pros/cons of a relationship between two people whose thinking patterns have these stats? Would communication normally be easy or difficult? Things that can hurt? Things that can help? Just things to basically expect?
