K, my turn.

For Perfume, A Story of a Murderer:

I think Jean Baptiste (or whatever his name was) was in search of both an identity and status, as he was born into extreme poverty and faded into the background. That's why he needed to find the perfect scent, one that encaptured beauty and power- the two going hand in hand.

Once he found it, he realized it didn't matter b/c the people only loved him for the scent- the identity that he'd stolen from others. He was never loved for being himself. So he returns to the place where he originated.....did he kill himself? I couldn't figure that part out.

Also, note that everytime he parted ways with a caretaker, they perished in some way. I believe that represented his lack of an identity as well, b/c it meant he had no place to return to....no record of the past...no history.

That's my take on it. ::shrugs::

Virgin Suicides...

K, I remember that one of the sisters kept writing about dead trees, and there was one in their front yard. The one the sisters tried to protect from being chopped down.

Like the tree, their growth was being stunted by their peculiar and overly-strict parents. No air, sunlight, contact with the outside world = dead inside.

I still wonder why they summoned those boys right before they did it. I guess it was somehow related to the fact that they couldn't save that tree in their front yard when they tried. It was still dead, whether or not it was allowed to stand idle.
