What sign might he be?

My vote -- Scorpio, but deranged. Very prone to vengeance, letting rage get in the way of his great talent, capacity to love, etc.
"DAMN you! You little prying PANDORA! You little demon! Is this what you wanted to see?
CURSE you! You little lying DELILAH! You little viper! Now you cannot ever be free!
DAMN you! CURSE you!"
Christine (if she'd been born Libra): "Umm, dude, we can't get married if I don't know what you look like!"
The author, Gaston Leroux was a Taurus. And the actor (at least for the newest film adaptation) was Gerard Butler, a Scorpio with Cap Moon, Scorpio Venus, and Aqua Mars.
So I'm gonna say Phantom is either fixed energy (specially Taurus-Scorp axis), or brooding Capricorn.

I propose a sequal, entitled: "The Cellars of the Opera"
"If The Walls Could Sing"

Bulter is beautiful and perfect on the screen, but no one carries the vocals for this opera like Michael Crawford (Capricorn). You really "feel" the intensity in the original cast soundtrack.

Let's remember that it is the character of the Phantom of the Opera as well as his dwelling and habit, and not so much the interpretation by one generation or another.
After having read the plot of the story, I am inclined to think there are strong indicators favoring
Scorpio in light of the stereotypical description of the sign of Scorpio.
What troubles me, personally is that there are some undercurrents to this play that I can personally relate to as a Scorpio man.

Firebird, the REALLY intriguing thing? The novel is based on a nugget of truth! There actually was someone living in the Paris Opera House (or rather, beneath it.)
And yes, Erik is very "Scorpio" to me. To some degree he is very loving and nurturing, but also prone to great cruelty when he feels hurt.

Lol, I was gonna say Scorp flat out but didn't want to be accused of stereotyping.
I can totally see the Hades/Persephone parallels in this story though.

What is it that troubles you? It's a good story. At its core, it's a story of evolution (for Erik, anyway).
Another thing we should consider is the psychological profile of the Phantom.
The atmosphere of the times, which, according to the POTO website, "in the latter part of the nineteenth century when France was rampant with belief in the supernatural and the spirit world."
http://www.thephantomoftheopera.com/background/the-book

Let's look at some of the featured depictions of the opera:
We have death
We have heartbreak
We have dark dwellings
We have possessiveness
We have intense emotions
We have intense resentments
We have creativity
We have music
We have isolation
We have "Monster" quality
We have manipulation
We have magnetism
We have mystique
We have enemies
etc...
among other things
Why is the Phantom resentful?
Why is the Phantom disfigured?

I'm going with Scorpio, too. Maybe Cancer....

Don't forget, the theme of forgiveness and generosity is visited at the end when Erik does not force his will upon Christine. Probably the first real love he expresses to her.
In the novel, Erik was born with his disfigurement. He claimed his mother was so horrified by his appearance she masked him the day he was born and never kissed him. He fled home and landed in a series of misadventures that left him with a very jaded world view. His disfigurement qualified with his exceptional intelligence and talents made him a figure of fear and resentment by others.
One thing that stands out to me as odd is Erik's strict protocol in donning and wearing the mask. Honestly, you'd think after a while he'd be okay with himself and his appearance, even if he believed no one else was.

Like strings reacting sympathetically. That is, two cellos sit in the chamber. The player plays one
while the sits undisturbed, that is... until notes are gently stroked and the idle cello sympathetically plays as if a ghost were sliding his bow across the sympathetic string of the lonesome cello.

Hmmmm...My best friend since my school days is an Earth Rooster (or is she a hen because she's female?) I would say that element and year give you tendencies towards being well-informed on current events and a somewhat conservative nature. At the same time, your sense of humor is a lot of fun because it comes across as a tad deadpan and people may not always understand when you joke? ALSO, nice, orderly homemaking/housekeeping is important to you.
LOL...Did I get anything right?

I don't know what a black moon is. Is that the same thing as a new moon, maybe? Or an eclipse?
Mr. Firebird, help?
An Iron Dog refers to Chinese astrology. I was born in the year of the Dog under the metal element. The Chinese call that "Iron Dog."
oh got it! I haven't had any luck with chinese astrology coming close to pegging me. Same with vedic.
I think black moon is similar to a Lilith moon.. Or any moon that is aspected by Pluto or one of the asteroids?
I shall have to re-consult with ze google. My analytical Virgo skills are shit until the end of the month though. Just an FYI. Sad
Ok, that would make sense. Firebird, your lilith is all noble Big Grin

Ahh, you answered it right there. He was born disfigured. =x It sounds like he didn't take it off because of shame.

Nice to see you, Bliss!
I think, to my mind, a real Scorpio would eventually make peace with any type of deformity or disfigurement. In fact, a Scorp would likely make the disfigurement something "cool" about himself. or herself. That's just my sense of it.

I don't if it is or not....
Well, is black moon in cancer basically "lilith in cancer"?
Lilith, THE BLACK MOON, Positioned in CANCER
Lilith positioned in Cancer speaks of mistakes and temptations linked to motherhood and babies. The individual may have to settle karma based on destructive behavior linked to women or babies. The history of humanity is full of wars or maybe the individual's actions were destructive personally to them, when they were a mother.
Bad karma in the sign of Cancer may be linked to the dark past of the kindred, destruction of towns, families and homes as well as the conquest of foreign lands. In this life the individual should aim to develop respect for the female principle, babies, parents, ancestors, Homeland and traditions. This karma may also speak of disrespect to burial places, temples, other nations, their languages, culture and traditions. If the individual wants to have a happy family, they should sincerely seek to develop tenderness and an ability to take care of others. The individual should learn to create coziness. The individual should practice and respect faithfulness.
Lilith positioned in Cancer may reveal bad karma linked to prostitution and pimping. This activity in the distant past may negatively influence certain spheres in this life. The individual may experience an unhappy family life, misfortunes with their kindred and problems linked to offspring and fertility.
"Lilith in Cancer is also linked to the coward's karma, surrendering to fears or betrayal out of fear to be destroyed. It is important to develop courage in this life and get rid of the victim's role. Often Lilith positioned in Cancer indicates various ways of selfish exploitation: the individual may exaggerate symptoms of their illnesses; they may be prone to dramatize everything; they may have neuroses. Underneath all of this is a rooted willingness to receive attention, support and to live a comfortable life in the constant role of a victim. The individual should avoid sentimentality, whimpering as well as despotic and egoistic love, which leaves no space for the freedom and independence of others. The overall situation reveals the unbalanced and disharmonious female principle. Too much of it will stimulate sentimentality, cowardice, selfish exploitation or the female principle and despotism. The lack of it will encourage a person that hates women, sensitivity and tenderness. If the individual has gone through this, they will be able to recognize the discussed shortcomings in themselves and others. If the individual has already finished their negative karma in Cancer, they will persistently attempt to help mothers (especially those who are abused), forsaken babies, and the weak."

I'm lilith in Sag.
Lilith, THE BLACK MOON, Positioned in SAGITTARIUS
Lilith positioned in Sagittarius shows the complicated past stories linked to religion, spirituality , spiritual gurus and authorities. Usually this position discloses the materialistic outlook and lack of trust. Often the individual does not even perceive consciously that they do not trust God. The individual thinks that they are a believer, but indeed they are afraid to open up to God and the guidance of the spirit. The individual's prayers and trust are formal and superficial and they are afraid, unwilling and unable to pray sincerely and independently. Therefore, the individual may experience unease, doubt, tremors and fear when approaching spiritual experiences and practices. The individual should aim to restore a true and deep relationship to God. The individual should ask God to forgive them for the materialistic outlook and the denial of the God's will. Lilith positioned in Sagittarius will show harm brought to temples, priests, religious people and religion itself.
This position is linked to despotism, cruelty and unwillingness to listen to others. It also shows piracy, conquest of foreign lands and plunder. Lilith positioned in Sagittarius speaks of pirates, cheerful robbers, wars of the cross, inquisition, feats of Cortes and revolutionary takeovers.
Where are these cheerful pirates and heroes? Many of them are walking among us. What are the consequences? The individual respects only themself and this attitude inhibits their ability to deserve authority, respect and a stable social status. The same can be said about their relationship with God. The mind of the individual dares to criticize or even condemn God.
In this life, the individual should aim to perceive the concept of respect. The individual should revise which authorities in their life deserve true respect and they should check to see if they have an appropriate attitude to them. Often, the individual communicates superficially and does not perceive the principle of hierarchy. They simply do not imagine that there is someone on a higher evolutionary level than they themselves are. Sometimes it seems that the individual creates authority and then destroys it.
It may be that the individual has already gone through this. Then the individual will easily notice negative and positive sides of any authority. The individual will not surrender to subservience. Nevertheless, the individual should aim to gain c

Well, here is my take:
I would say that element and year give you
1) tendencies towards being well-informed on current events (yes)
2) and a somewhat conservative nature. (yes)

At the same time, your sense of humor is a lot of fun (Not sure if my sense of humor is fun or not)
because it comes across as a tad deadpan (Deadpan???)
and people may not always understand when you joke? (This DOES happen)
ALSO, nice, orderly homemaking/housekeeping is important to you. (Yes, the world's a mess, don't need it at home)
