Some of you know my secret lust to take over and or have a baking empire. Carve a niche for m'self. I have always loved to cook, even at age 10 I was at a stove making dinner for my younger sister and I while Daddy was at work. This went onto culinary school and eventually onto restaurant work. Been at all places within one. Let's just say..the woman here knows her stuff.
In any event, I noticed the pastry case at employ was certainly not getting the love it should, i.e. what was within was a flaming testament to mediocrity at best. And I am being completely fair in that assessment.
I talked to my boss and he agreed to buy pies from me. I brought in one, then another.. and the feedback was tremendous. This tripped into within house business. Doing pies, cakes for my cohorts. Cupcakes and fondant delights for a little girls in school birthday party. Well! It stuttered a wee bit, as he did what was always done, ordering from the bakery.
Lil' Heifer here copped an attitude over the whole lack of forward motion and prepared 4 pies with love and magic Taurus sprinklings, took them into work. To see exactly what was what. Pitted mine against those poor sobbing creatures housed behind glass. The owner had me tuck a slice of each into boxes for him and his wife to try, he tried them before he skied off for the day. After his moans receded a bit, the business man took over. He clapped a keen eye on me and said "Can you make anything the bakery can?" I said "Yes, and BETTER." The hammer fell. He called out his head from the back of the house to see them, who approved visual appeal. I urged him to try it, wanted his opinion, he'll be lucky if there's any left today. When the pies were delivered he informed them he no longer required their services.
Upshot?
I will not only be making pies and desserts for our business, but 2 others he owns. With full recognition, complete autonomy of the kitchen when I occupy it.
DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMN IT'S GOOD TO BE DA QUEEN.

Oh yes! And I got a marriage proposal from an older regular over his slice of cherry pie. 🙂

I remember when I lived with my ex-fianc?, he was always mesmerized when I cooked, because I didn't use any boxed mixes, etc. A cake was - Cake flour, sugar, etc. Mashed potatoes were, boiled potatoes, take through a ricer to make em' nice and smooth and lovingly prepared with heavy cream, butter...and other secrets I put in them.

My son called me the other day, and mentioned they were spending both holidays with me this year.I get the blessing of Ari's first Christmas.I asked "Thanksgiving too—" because I just always figured they'd alternate between families.he said yeah,he realized after they were here last Thanksgiving, then went home and ate other people's left overs...nobody cooks like mom.😉

I do DG, lard, flour, salt and ice water, just like Gramma taught. 🙂 And your pa was right, Granny Smith greens are the best pie apple. I use them in regular apple and my sugarless apple. My Dad is a diabetic and that's always what he asks for.

Mmmm mashed potatoes. I'm such a potato hound. I blame my Irish, but really I'm just a carb junkie. I leave the skins on, and chuck in roasted garlic, kosher salt and cracked black pepper. Milk and real butter. I'll peel them for company mashed, but not for me. If there's any left they get turned into potato cakes for breakfast.

Awwwww Bells ( first holidays already... ), and thank you!

LOL dof, nahhhh, not too over the top. 🙂

I'll remember to MOOOOOOOOO Lion. Thanks. 🙂

That's terribly close to mine DG, I pat up the cold mashed ( sometimes I'll chuck in some chive or even just good old chopped yellow onion ) dust them with flour and fry them in heated olive oil. I mean really, can one go wrong here? LOL It's fried POTATO.
I used to watch and enjoy 'The Frugal Gourmet' often when it was on. His show was removed from air because of allegations from his assistant chefs on sexual harassment ( the young men were teens and others bellied up to the bar going back to the 70s..nothing proved, settled out of court, but the show went toodles ). Him and Martin Yan, Julia Child, Graham Kerr and whoever else was on PBS. Justin Wilson was fun ( I guar-an-TEE! ) There's a 'BBQ U' show I like, and one Puerto Rican woman ( her show name escapes me presently ) who is just amazing.
The cooking shows I really dig now are Nigella Lawson ..'Nigella Bites', 'Nigella Feasts'; she's gorgeous and really likes to cook and EAT REAL FOOD. Anthony Bourdain, Ina Garten, Paula Deen, Alton Brown, Jamie Oliver and Ty Florence. Guy Fieri for fun 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives'. Over to other networks for 'Man vs. Food' ( how does he eat all that?! ), etc. I've always liked ones with history to them too. The ones on ice cream, county fairs, etc. Learn as you look at all this heart clogging goodness.

No, he doesn't look healthy, I don't know how he does it and keeps on going. The show is going to flat out wreck him. The Nelsons? I've not seen that one, then again I cut the satellite some time ago, so do my main watching online. Thanks for the congrats. 🙂 LOL I'll skip that soup methinks and stick to hot and sour or chili infused broth when I want to blast congestion. "My soup..it looks at me..."

I'll buy Rachel Rays cookbooks, and use 'em, but she reminds me of that one particular HS cling-on I'd just like to slap the snot out of for some reason. TOO chipper..makes me wonder...bwahahahaaa.

Oh really, is anything better? Two people crazy about each other sharing a kitchen? Food is love in my family. Whoooo! "Massage it into her.." I want to go to that restaurant, that looks amazingly good. Thank you for the clip LibraLuv. 🙂 It's nice to have the background. AWWWWWWW he came to her after her appendectomy, and stayed there. Makes my heart go pitty-pat.

LMAO Exactly..reminds me of that joke with travelers from Africa to the States..at a cookout. Can't remember the punch-line exactly, but at theirs they introduced a grub..saying it tasted like chicken..and back in the States they were munching chicken and remarking to each other it tasted of grub worm.
What really turned my stomach was some fermented Moroccan dish, the sheeps head surprise and somewhere else ( Vietnam? ) a fermented bean curd slurry..black as pitch. And he pulled those tofu blocks out of it. I was thinking "They eat that?! GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Heheheheee, ever want a good laugh? Go to a website called 'semihorrible', it pulls Sandra Lee through a knothole backwards.
I put up spaghetti sauce ( or Bolognese sauce to our Brit mates ) last year, it didn't last long. Home made macaroni and cheese is the best. I'll chuck ham or ham hock in that from time to time. The kids and I scarf the hell out of that. I use sharp cheddar, Mexican blend cheeses and asiago or feta to kick it a bit. Bit of dried mustard too. Or a casserole in the winter we love is simply sliced potato, bacon and white sauce baked till it's bubbly brown on top. Terrific with homemade bread and a citrus salad. HAHAHHAHA Bull talking about food, irony that.
