Boy stays in home with dad's body for 2 days
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy stayed in an apartment with the body of his father for two days after the man died on their sofa, obeying instructions to never leave without permission, firefighters said.
The boy, whose name was not released, didn't want to leave even after firefighters arrived, fearing punishment if he left, fire department Maj. Noble Lee said.
"He wasn't as distraught as one might think," Lee said. "I don't think he understands the gravity of the past few days. He wasn't as upset at the situation as he was about being outside the residence without permission."
His father, Kevin Dale Judd, 52, appears to have died of natural causes, authorities said. The body was found late Monday after neighbors and a maintenance man reported a foul odor, Lee said.
According to a police report, the boy told police his father had been feeling ill and laid down. The boy left the room to watch television, and when he returned his father was slumped over.
The boy did not know to call 911 in case of an emergency, said Department of Human Services spokesman George Earl Johnson Jr. He apparently had not eaten in two days but refused food and water offered by firefighters and paramedics, Lee said.
Johnson said the boy will remain in DHS custody until relatives are found to care for him.

"Teach your children a little common sense"
What was the common sense part you are referring to?
A boy of 6 shouldn't leave the house if the dad is napping.
Perhaps the boy just thought his dad was napping, and not an emergency.
Maybe the boy is mentally challenged.
Judgements without inside information .. like the media.
""He wasn't as distraught as one might think," Lee said. "I don't think he understands the gravity of the past few days. He wasn't as upset at the situation as he was about being outside the residence without permission.""
Apparantly, he likely didn't realize his father was dead .. but, had been taught the dangers of leaving the house without permission at his tender age.
Not sure what lack of common sense on the boys part started this thread.

I hear you archer .. yet, we don't know .. maybe the dad napped all the time and the kid just didn't realize it was an emergency. The article didn't say .. but, if we concluded the situation according to most family structures .. the dad was napping during the day, which suggests that he must work at night .. so, it's likely that he's always on the couch in this fashion, which wouldn't send of signals to a child that something is the matter.
A 6 year old can be informed on what to do in an emergency, but, they are still a child of only 6 and doesn't have adult awareness .. for instance, I watch all the time on TV about kids who are laying over one of their parents, crying .. it's not until the parent tells them that they need help, that the kid will get up and call for rescue. They KNOW how to call .. but, they don't recognize an emergency situation.
My point was .. this kind of article (which I realize FE that you were only pasting), is worded in such a way to give limited information about the dynamics of the situation with the intentions of making a point that has no other way, except to slant a persons perspective in the direction THEY intended it to go .. they succeeded, the public would view this as being something wrong with the child , or something wrong with how this child has been raised.
The media does it all the time ..
fyi: common sense cannot be taught .. you either have it or you don't
Some people just freak out (not in this situation, of course) .. but, a couple years ago, a grown woman nearby came running out of her house, screaming for help at the top of her lungs because her child stopped breathing. She was completely hysterical .. in hindsight, she admitted that she should have called 9-1-1 .. she just lost her senses because she was panicked. Or, maybe, she just lacked common sense period and was only saying that because someone told her that's what she should have done.
My D-I-L stuck her hand in the meat slicer at a deli 5 times before her employer let her go because she was a liability .. to this day, she still doesn't understand why they did this .. she lacks common sense and cannot be taught .. you have it, or you don't.

Certainly, FE .. I'm not upset about you. I realize that you only posted something you saw in an article .. but, the media accomplished what it set out to do .. you posted it here, for more people to read and make this kind of assessment.
It's a child .. a child .. a child .. it CANNOT reason like an adult.

Here's an example:
Say, for instance, you are a runner, jog daily. And when you return from your jog, you are breathing quite heavily, sweating, holding your chest until you can catch your breath. Your child sees you do this everyday.
One day, you are breathing very heavily, sweating, holding your chest .. actually having a Myocardial Infarcton .. you think your child is going to recognize the difference? Put two-and-two together and rationalize that you weren't just jogging, so, therefore, you must be having a heart-attack, instead and should call 9-1-1?
Were talking about a CHILD .. the media irritates the crap out of me, but, more so, people who only live in a world being a "thater".
It's not THAT the wind is blowing .. it's What the wind is blowing.
It's not that the child didn't call for rescue .. it's what was the maturity level of the person EXPECTING to have enough "Sense" to know the difference.

Yeah, same DIL .. I only have one child, my son is a 25 year old Scorpion.
She had it on Wednesday 3/21 .. Aries Sun/Taurus moon, rising in Leo. The birth was great .. she only had to push for 11 minutes .. not bad .. thanks for asking.
I agree with, "kids need to be taught to have "decision making clarity"
It just pisses me off with the media .. only giving limited information slants a person's perspective, which because we are prone to jump on bandwagons because of being programmed to "just believe" .. we form assessments without really looking at the entire picture .. only seeing a tree and not the whole forest, kind of mind-set.
Sure enough .. people blindly "believe" that this child has not been raised properly, when in reality .. we have no clue. I can speak from personal experience, archer, if the child has high-functioning autism .. it can get "stuck" within certain parameters of the mind and is unable to see beyond, until the mind "un-sticks". So, in reality, this father COULD have been an awesome parent, wasn't napping at all, however died on the couch .. if the child's mind has episodes of "sticking", a good and responsible parent WOULD make damn sure that if they can get nothing else through to the child, they will what's really important .. don't leave the house.
There's no way of knowing the "real" truth .. it's not fair to say that the parent was wrong in his child-rearing skills because we don't know the dynamics of the situation, only what the media chose to tell us.

She has a lot to figure out, though, with Nanna (me) .. because I don't always comprehend the right things to say. She was supposed to be born in Pisces, but, refused to come out until then .. so, maybe this was a gift .. with her planets in the position they are .. she's going to be very level-headed and understanding ..
Lessons in life never end .. what we need is sent to us .. she is indeed my angel.
